Lugansky - Rachmaninoff, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
    • Lugansky - Rachmaninof...
Hi Travis and Suzi! Can you believe we’ve reached the final installment of the piano concerto series already? I’ve had such great fun with this, and I hope you have too. Before I introduce this work, I need to give a shout out to your fan, James. I was absolutely over the moon a couple of months ago when he popped your Rachmaninoff (rock-MON’-in-off) cherry with the last movement of his exquisite Symphonic Dances, which is one of my three favorite works by the composer. My other two favorites are his Third Symphony and, of course everyone’s favorite, the set of variations on a theme by Paganini presented here. The piece is comprised of 24 variations based on the 24th Caprice for Solo Violin by Niccolo Paganini. This is a deservedly very well-known and celebrated work. There’s a good chance that you and your fans will be humming the tunes (or at least the 18th variation) for days. The 18th variation takes the Paganini theme and turns it upside down as well as slows it way down. Don’t worry about trying to keep track of the variations, you’ll know when you get to the 18th because both of you will be exclaiming, “Ah, YYYEEESSS!!!” I hope you enjoy this glorious capstone to my first series attempt.

Rachmaninoff's 'Piano Concerto No. 2' is the greatest piece of music ever written. Especially the movement titled 'Adagio Sostenuto'.

Rach 2 is beautiful for sure but Rach 3 is musically truly outstanding. His cello sonata is fantastic too.

One of my favorite pieces of music. The section starting around 18:40 was used in the movie Somewhere In Time with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymour! Beautiful movie with beautiful music! ❤

The 18th variation… that’s where Suzi started making involuntary vocalizations:)

And amazingly, it's the same main melody that all the other variations are based on, just flipped upside down on the musical staff.

I don’t know about a modern conducting wand, but the person who invented conducting, Jean Baptiste-Lully, used a big wooden stick when he invented it. Instead it of waving it in the air to keep people together he pounded it on the ground. One day he accidentally pounded it into his foot and the gangrene he developed as a consequence was the reason he died.

If you like Rachmaninoff check out Shostakovich. But you probably already have.

I don't know whether anyone has been injured by a conductor's baton, but it wouldn't surprise me. I remember our conductor throwing a baton at a saxophone player, and having it go down the bell of his sax. And of course the legendary French composer Lully died of gangrene caused by striking his own foot with his conductor's staff -- back in 1687.

You may not be aware, but the theme that the brass played right before the end is the famous "Dies Irae" gregorian chant theme, from the Requiem. It invokes the souls of the dead.
