I just went through every Death album in reverse order and skipped through random parts. Never found anything I didn't like. In fact, it doesn't get *worse* going backwards, just more raw. Never listened to Death before, but I just dropped a bunch of money on their entire discography on CD. Going to be a very fun next few months getting familiar with this band.

@n n true, but it still sounded more in line with how they would sound live in a place with OK acoustics while modern bands just have everything pretty over produced and clean

@@dikemavis666 Seven Churches is a seminal masterpiece! The first album with real and palpable features of Death Metal. But I think that Possessed still flirts with Thrash Metal in some breakdowns. still blows my mind there was music this heavy in the 80s. first time i listened though Reign in Blood i couldn't believe it, and then classics like this are even more brutal! fucking awesome
@Sean Hassan Death was formed 3 years before Bolt thrower and Scream bloody gore came out 1 year before debut album of Bolt thrower, so u are wrong there. However many consider Seven Churches by Possesed to be the first death metal album, which was released roughly a year before Scream bloody gore.
Yes billy i agree with you bro possessed and the other ones maybe pre dated this record but dis was the first truly death metal album the another ones was just a fucking mess no offense
Not ONLY one of the best metal albums ever recorded, but also one of my favorite pieces of album art ever. Like look at that: skeleton dudes in cultish robes hanging out in a dark, dank tomb. Cozy lighting. And I love the purple shade the one in the throne is wearing. You just don't see this type of nice scene anymore on albums these days. The sound, the technicality, atmosphere, and thematic style is just superb. I thoroughly enjoy death metal which treads equally in grotesque gore, occult mysticism, and instrumentation which is at once ferocious, yet intricate and still preserving some good sense of chord progression and melody. This delivers just that.
Was lucky enough to catch them shortly before he got too sick to tour. I could not believe what a sweet guy he was. Such an evilly crushing album from such a nice dude.
My personal ranking of songs \o/ 1. Zombie ritual 2. Evil dead 3. Infernal death 4. Denial of life 5. Torn to pieces 6. Mutilation 7. SBG 8. Baptized 9. Regurgitated 10. Sacrifical 11. Land of no return 12. Unholy grave
I still can't get over how the man went through so many different styles of vocals with all of them sounding so different but none of them sounding anything short of amazing. I still don't know how he did that style on The Sound of Perseverance. I don't think I've ever heard anyone come close to mimicking it, either. Well, maybe Vektor, but that's it. And that's just his singing! The dude was also tearing it up on guitar while doing that! Some of the most influential stuff in the metal world. Chuck was wild.
One of the best OG Death Metal albums. Without Chucks influence (Possessed also), albums like slowly we rot by Obituary, Legion by Deicide or Eaten back to Life by Cannibal Corpse would have never exhisted to help create the Death Metal we all love today, past and present. RIP Chuck, the King of Death Metal straight up in my humble opinion.

Back when this came out I bought it on cassette tape not knowing what it was, back in the day I bought albums based off the cover art and the name of the band as we had no internet to look it up. I fell in total love with it and it introduced me to the new world of Death Metal because up to this point I only listened to Thrash/Speed Metal. Chuck became my guitar influence later on as he progressed with each album. Love this band and everything Chuck has done
@Flat Earth Florida I was at that concert, it was my first show ever I too was 11, it was at Long Beach Arena in California and was lucky enough to be there the night they picked for the album, I believe they played 4 sold out nights at long beach that weekend... It was the best thing I'd ever experienced in my 11 years, I never heard music that loud or seen anything like that. My friends older brother took us and I was hooked, I couldn't see enough concerts after that
Without doubt, this album was the birth and influence of the Florida Death Metal scene. Like most first albums, it was dirty and not great, but it was the precursor to absolute masterful death metal albums. I think think this is a pretty brutal death metal debut and a very respectable first album. I love it.
Infernal Death , Zombie Ritual and Scream Bloody Gore for me. One thing I like about this metal is no evil satanic reference or influence. All Movie Slasher Gore Fiction Horror.
I remember first hearing this on Cobra Records in Winter 1987 in Canada. What a great album! I read in a magazine how good this album would be and it was - just look at the cover and read the song titles alone! Every song on this album is killer, so it's hard to pick favorites, but i'll go with 'Evil Dead'. Awesome times and awesome memories - SBG was sure a huge influence to me musically, no doubt! Hails to old Death! Hails from Canada!

A. Od-Reszki Morbid angel is crucial, especially the first 4 albums IMO. Also highly rate Edge Of Sanity, they're very underrated. If you want to try something more technical Cynic, Obscura and Atheist are all amazing. Sort of a different genre all together but some amazing melodic death metal bands are In Flames (first 5 albums), insomnium, children of bodom, dark tranquillity and the first Wintersun album which is in my top 10 albums of all time :)
Such an awesome album. I bought this at Tower Records on cassette in '87 just because the album cover was so beyond EPIC. I was 15 and remember picking it up along with Exodus Bonded By Blood. I really miss those days of randomly picking out albums just for the artwork lol.
mark palavos3 yeah Possessed was the first proto Death band. In my opinion the first masterpiece was Morbid Angel’s first album but this from Death was a classic too. And of course Obituary, Deicide, Pestilence, Nocturnus, Cynic... Death Metal’s kings 🤟💀
Arguably the first death metal album. I know they say possessed but they're really thrash to my ears. Regardless, even if Chuck didn't pioneer it. He shaped it into a genre of it's own R.I.P you legend!!
Possessed is death metal, but I get how you're feeling. I view Venom as thrash as opposed to black metal despite them singing a song called Black Metal, just like Possessed sang a song called Death Metal
My favourite one of theirs, not a popular opinion, but its just too raw not to be. I appreciate good musicianship, but sometimes the more primitive side takes over

Mega brutal
I just went through every Death album in reverse order and skipped through random parts. Never found anything I didn't like. In fact, it doesn't get *worse* going backwards, just more raw. Never listened to Death before, but I just dropped a bunch of money on their entire discography on CD. Going to be a very fun next few months getting familiar with this band.
a very ,very wise decision young man.
i'll never forget the day i first bought this lp.
and its been 30 years.
Been going great so far. Individual Thought Patterns is a standout for me.
Insederec i got the same feeling when i had discovered them for myself. enjoy!!!
I would ALSO recommend Chuck's other work Control Denied especially if you enjoyed the last 2 Death albums.
onewithmyself i probably enjoy all the death albums equally lol depends on my mood
I remember buying this on cassette!!!!!!! My parents sent me to confirmation classes - this certainly got the attention of everyone when I showed up listening to it.
Reverb is on point, the atmosphere of this album is so unique and fitting with the music. I wish modern metal would produce like this again, raw sound. Everythings is too fucking polished and plastic sounding this days
“Plastic” pretty accurate
@n n different uses yield different results
Yup. Give me nasty raw death meta
@n n true, but it still sounded more in line with how they would sound live in a place with OK acoustics while modern bands just have everything pretty over produced and clean
@Metal head yeah me too, nothing beats the old school
The bass on Zombie Ritual is unbeliveable.
And it was performed by the same Chuck as well
I can never get tired of this band, great musicians!! The bass player is a machine and to hear bass in metal now says is rare.its all about the riffs anymore, death is everything metal wish it was now.
Chuck did bass on this album as well as writing all of the lyrics, vocals and guitar
The best bass is in individual thought patterns with Steve Digiorgio, but Chuck did do a good job here.
Absolute Masterpiece!

I agree with you Nelson
Nelson Oyarzun Second that.
Pølcifer Pøffer it appears you have 4thd lmao but I'll 5th it!!!

Simply genius, Pure Genius. The godfather of death metal.
Remember he wrote everything bass, drum guitar vocals... 🤌🤌🤌 Like they say
Venom was the key,
Possessed was the door
DEATH is the way.
He literally create a whole new genre by himself in his late teenage... Damn it. Rest in Power ...Chuck. 👏👏👏
Don't forget Master!
37 today. We have the same age. Discovered Death at 14yo. Have been one of my biggest influences in life ever since. Zombie Ritual starts playing and I still have got shivers all over me. Unreal. He'll always remain my fav guitarist ever. Thanks Chuck for a lifetime of emotions.

The best years for sure for decades to come in music history! I was discovering them all in the 90s and even then they’re mind blowing to digest \m/
@@Steel8sons hell, it still blew my young mind in they early 2010s. And I’m still finding other bands now as I enter adult life. Metal never ceases to amaze!
And this album absolutely slaughtered all three of those
@@ARG0T Don't get it twisted... those albums are legendary, brutal, innovative and atmospheric all in their own way.
Chuck definitely took inspiration from all three and used that to make Scream Bloody Gore.
Don't try to downplay their genius as well.

The album that defined Death Metal as we know it today. Timeless masterpiece!
Morbid Angel "Altars of Madness" defined death metal. This is more thrash than death, like Kreator "Pleasure to Kill".
@@dbpu4135 Altars of Madness is a seminal classic too, but the weight, density and identity of Death Metal comes from Scream Bloody Gore.
@@danielsan2142 What about seven churches?
@@dikemavis666 Seven Churches is a seminal masterpiece! The first album with real and palpable features of Death Metal. But I think that Possessed still flirts with Thrash Metal in some breakdowns. Scream Bloody Gore is the album that takes Death Metal away from anything else. But yes, Seven Churches has a lot of Death Metal.
Agreed. This is the album that creates death metal. Possessed came close but this one nailed it.
Baptized in blood has to be the most badass sounding song name. So morbid at the same time. One of my favorites 🤘
All these song names can be album names
I like "Baptized in the blood of Satan" by Imprecation. Great title as well.
still blows my mind there was music this heavy in the 80s. first time i listened though Reign in Blood i couldn't believe it, and then classics like this are even more brutal! fucking awesome

Billy Anggranesta ha ha noo bolt thrower was around before death and they had a big influence on Chuck
Death metal was born dead in seven churches, but here it was Baptized in Blood
seven churches
The high-pitched shrieks on this are PHENOMENAL
Yeah man Death Metal isn't exactly what it use to be that's for sure
The first act of DEATH METAL in history! HAIL
Can't believe this is from 1987. Imagine all 80s Hits next to this xD Death definetely was ahead of its time.

Chuck was a legend it needs to be remembered that he played all the instruments here except the drums.
Fascinating
This was Chuck's best vocal style.
For me it was spiritual healing. I think that some songs on later death albums would've been better lower, but they still work.
I love his vocals all throughout his musical career
I still can't get over how the man went through so many different styles of vocals with all of them sounding so different but none of them sounding anything short of amazing. I still don't know how he did that style on The Sound of Perseverance. I don't think I've ever heard anyone come close to mimicking it, either. Well, maybe Vektor, but that's it. And that's just his singing! The dude was also tearing it up on guitar while doing that! Some of the most influential stuff in the metal world. Chuck was wild.
I think his best vocals was on Sound of Perseverance
@@HritNo. It was on Healing album. On Persiverance was weakest vocals.

This is the greatest Death Metal album ever!
One of the best OG Death Metal albums. Without Chucks influence (Possessed also), albums like slowly we rot by Obituary, Legion by Deicide or Eaten back to Life by Cannibal Corpse would have never exhisted to help create the Death Metal we all love today, past and present.

31:28 Theres something about the rawness of that solo that i absolutely love. and those pinch squeals make me pitch a tent
I also enjoy camping in the great outdoors with some good death metal. Nothing like some nifty little death ditties to set up camp to.
Brutal album!!
I LOVE HOW RAW DEATH WAS IN THE EARLY DAYS// THEY PROGRESSED IN STYLE YET THE OLDER STUFF HAD INCREDIBLE SOLOS// RIFFS// BREAKDOWNS

Best growl in music history, best guitarist, best composer. Thank you, Chuck.
the evolution of guitar technicity from MANTAS to CONTROL DENIED or "the sound of perseverance" is unique !!!!!!!!! still thanks chuck ! ! !
Chuck didn't even like tech/prog stuff early on. Ask ATHEIST.
Not only guitar technique evolved. The song-writing and Chuck's writing changed out of recognition too, not to mention the sound engineering...
