That would be a poor use of the grammar of mathematics, but people aren't known for always using good grammar. It's like a sentence in English without punctuation: as long as the reader and the writer are both using the same grammatical rules, it should be just fine. I feel like comments like this are missing the point of what was being said in the rush to find something to be smug about. It’s not unreasonable to want to know exactly how you’re meant to parse something that someone is reading out to you over the phone
The question that is being posed is this: the person on the phone says 155, plus 33, minus 4, divided by two
Are you meant to a) perform the operations as they are being told to you sequentially, i.e. treating each new phrase as a separate arithmetic operation being performed on the prior output (I.e. take 155 and add 33, then subtract 4, then divide by two)
Or b) write it down as a single expression and solve from there as normal, in which case yes, always.
The second seems more likely, but it’s not unreasonable to want to confirm when millions of dollars ride on it

It's not about how math (or maths) works (work?), it's about how we use the _language_ of math. There is no inherent mathematical reason why multiplication or summation should go first, it's only an issue because of the way we write equations. Math is _supposed_ to represent something happening in the real world (fifteen apples, twenty oranges, and 12 children plus two teachers to divide them between, for example), so the equation SHOULD be written to reflect the meaning of the problem at hand. PEMDAS or BODMAS only exist because it's possible to write it out in a way that the intent is confusing and ambiguous. So yes, it's entirely "optional" in the sense that you _could_ do it the other way around, that's just not the agreed-upon convention.

And annoyingly my sleepy mind quickly learned you only had to have 2 pieces diagonal to each other to turn it off. I'm guessing it was a plate, not individual nodes that turned it off. Needless to say that alarm clock didn't last long because my mind when sleepy and wanting more sleep was a good problem solver.

"It's so weird that they don't tell you how they want you to do it" There's only one way to solve a maths problem! There is an order of operations for a reason, so that maths works! And that's the way they want you to do it!

The problem people always have with those maths problems is that we've all got the memory that it's in order exactly "Parentheses THEN Exponents THEN Multiplication THEN Division THEN Addition THEN Subtraction"
When with a quick google you learn it's actually "Parentheses THEN Exponents THEN Multiplication AND Division (meaning left to right, whichever comes first) THEN Addition AND Subtraction (left to right, whichever comes first)

Lewis threw the first round so hard on accident and it had me chortling.
EDIT: Also, Ben's right. No matter what though, you'd use BODMAS/PEMDAS. You ALWAYS do parenthesis first, then exponents, then multiply/divide, then addition/subtraction. You always have to do it like that from left to right for the right answer (do brackets left to right then exponents, then division/mult left to right then add/sub left to right). So, no matter what, the right answer will be 186.

I have a feeling that if they tried to do the math problem by themselves/not being recorded, they'd default to using it a lot more confidently. There's something about being given what should be a simple problem when you haven't been in school for a while that can make people doubt themselves. It's embarrassing to get something simple wrong so you really start to second guess things (like math order rules), even though it's silly!
