    Another awesome advantage of a short throw projector as a TV replacement would be if you have any young kids that might throw any toys at the screen. A TV usually won't survive this lol.

    I bought an old Hitachi cpaw250 ultra short throw projector 6 years ago for video DJing at weddings, etc. The short throw is good because DJ areas are usually quite small and at $200 you aren't terribly worried if it gets damaged being constantly moved. I jerry rigged the ability to mount one of those stretchy 100" DJ screens between my speaker/stands and rear projected the image. No longer DJing, I have the projector, DJ screen and 7.1 receiver in my man cave in the basement with no windows. Yea, to the video purist, it is sub standard, but for my purposes, looks great for the price. If I do upgrade, I could not go back to a standard projector, I love the convenience of ultra short throw.

      Mate - it's seriously the best invention ever. I hope that more and more companies make screens this way. Because a UST will have a fixed position for the size based on the height of the furniture it's on, adjusting the screen to match it is the best and more elegant solution. I did a video on the construction of that screen on my channel recently too!

    One huge pro I think you forgot to mention is eye health. I'm a visual media addict, so long hours make it much easier on your eye's health. That's my main reason for going with a short throw projector over a tv.

      They're also not as bright or vivid and even a slight amount of Ambient light can make your blacks look even worse than they already do in a dark room. I'm glad I sold my UST and CLR screen and switched to an 85 inch TV. Never been happier.

    There’s something about a screen and projector that always beats a regular old TV. A tv is always have a better picture, especially an OLED. However a really large s screen, 100” plus, is incredibly immersive and you don’t realize the faults as much as you loose yourself in the movie

    • @BuildMontage

      Thats pretty much how I feel about it. A TV can't look cinematic in my view - they look realistic but don't have the same feel. Watch Dune 2021 on TV and then a Projector and you will instantly know what I mean.

  • @JoshFisher567
    @JoshFisher567 ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn't get a halo BUT I had to get my UST projector perfectly aligned meaning zero keystone. Keystone, outsides warping DOES reduce picture quality which is why my OCD like behavior made me get it perfectly aligned.
    I also think it's a requirement to have a UST ALR screen unless you have a perfectly light controlled environment. That means dark walls and ceilings also. I do wish Fresnel screens were less cheap like lectangular based screens, which is every UST ALR screen pretty much out there that most people have seen.
    With my 10 year old Stewart Firehawk, which I had zero issues with any previous projector, made the ceiling light a strobe light as I had white ceilings. This is due to the extreme angle of the light source. UST projectors have to intentionally warp the picture due to the angle which does not affect picture quality like manual keystoning. If they didn't manual keystoning would be a requirement. This is another reason UST projectors, particularly DLP ones, have terrible input lag for gaming. Typically between 30ms to over 100ms. LCD projectors might work differently about warping the image as they are LCD but get around 5 to 15ma of lag so that may be a HUGE factor if you're going to be doing any gaming at all and are interested in a UST projector.
    The way lectangular based screens work, they only project light coming from a specific angle that ALSO only project the image directly back at typical user swatting eye level. This is HUGE for brightness, especially during the day. I have to disagree about zero light from the sides. They do block some light from the sides but not block as much light from the sides. They do a great job at overhead light though
    Lastly, they bring out any imperfection in a regular screen WAY more than a regular standard throw projector. I saw imperfections in Stewart Firehawk that I never knew existed like tiny sags.
    UST projector screens use springs to attach the frame to the screen to keep it super tight for that very reason. Lectangular based screens are essentially using nanotechnology to create ridges in the screen that go out and angle down. The out part is pointed to the ceiling and the angle part is pointed towards the floor (you can hang a UST screen the wrong way and you would notice immediately). The flat part reflects light and angled part only projects light back. This angle is the angle that the light from a UST projector comes from. Most can offer up to 90 percent of overhead light so they are perfectly fine for daytime use IMO but you will never get OLED blacks but you unless you got like 30K for a 96" LG OLED, or you want a 98 to 100 inch's only there are some 96" to 100" LED TV's coming out with back lit zones that are affordable but aren't available in the US yet. TCL just launched, or is about to launch a 98" LED TV with around 100 back lit zones for 3,012 dollars US. Problem is it's only being released in China and that's just how the exchange rate works out.
    The only problem with lectangular based design is it makes the screen typically have a 0.4 to 0.6 gain which does affect overall brightness. Fresnel based screens are based on CRT technology ironically but have a 1.0 gain, are much brighter and look more like an actual traditional TV. Their issues are that they can be prone to hot spotting, viewing angles and they are hard screens so they can't be rolled up which makes installing and shipping much more difficult but they can be sized over 200"s also. That and price as they are typically 15K or more depending on the manufacturer.
    So if your interested in.UST factor in a screen also, even if you have a traditional projector screen. It's almost a must have IMO.

      True you can - I just think a screen really makes the image pop and also can reject ambient light as well in a bright room :) Thanks for watching

    great vid! i have this set up in our basement, as we are currently renting a townhouse. it works great and love it, have it connected to denon/klipsch 7.2.4 system and it is a wow for anyone that comes through. when we move to our final home, i do plan on getting a regular projector, but this has done extremely well, and the ease of it is the main selling point. i built a small mount for it to sit on, to project to a 150" screen. my center speaker sits closer to the wall than the projector so it works

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats great! Yes for a 150" no keystone required as you could pull it far enough forward to miss hitting the speaker. Nice job!

    Nice video 👍... I would suggest a wall mounted 6 inch ledge (box) that could be designed/decorated to match home decor with hinged drop down center not only to hide but also as it hinged open would give adequate distance from wall that's needed without permanently taking up much area away from the wall. (And imagine the drop down center being automated and voice controlled) 💯

  • @iamking5103
    @iamking5103 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So another big mistake is hanging your projector screen as high as the one you have in this video. You don't want to sit and have to look up the entire time that you're watching a video. The equivalence of that mistake are those people who think putting their flat screen above a fireplace is a good idea. Your head should be placed center mass with the screen to avoid eye strain, neck and back pain etc. Myself I have a samsung 9t and I can't find not one flaw yet other than having to empty every pocket to get it. Lastly the center channel does not have to go under your short throw unless you have a massive center speaker. The short throw sits far enough away on a downward angle thus allowing your center to be close to the wall under the screen. ( using the polk es35) and you are absolutely right about there not being any media center for it, luckily I work with wood and custom designed one that sits 1 inch off of the floor with shelves for the receiver and ps5

    I've had my VAVA 4k for like 8 months now when it went on sale for around $2K. I love it! Paired with 120" Floor rising Vividstorm designed for UST (with brackets). I was able to put my center channel in front of the VAVA 4k by installing brackets on the frame of the TV stand where the VAVA sits and worked really well. I had to remove the top tempered glass (2 total) on the TV stand so the VAVA 4k sits lower. Getting it to align was not bad at all for me (lucky me I guess). The vast majority of UST projectors, like this vava, are all single-DLP by default. Single-DLP projectors can only have sequential color. Sequential color always produce RGB flashes (more popularly known as the rainbow effect, or RBE). Most people do not see RBE, but for those who do, it can give them things like migraine headaches etc within a minute or two of watching the show. Once RBE is seen, like tinnitus that doesn't go away, it can't be unseen. UST projector reviewers (and for that matter all single-DLP projectors, not just UST) should always note and talk about RBE (or their inability to see it) instead of merrily skipping over it because a person who is affected by RBE (but does not know it yet) could take the "4k" and "laser source" flashy tech jargon as a cue to buy one then regret the decision. DLP is a monopoly, and domestic projector manufacturers take the single-DLP shortcut to cut costs. But RBE is as real as it is unpredictable; cinemas are not going to be caught dead using single-DLP projectors anytime; all cinemas use 3-DLP or 3-LCoS because of this unpredictability. This is why IMHO any single-DLP domestic projector, like this vava, is a wretched piece of technology which is deliberately hobbled by a monopoly's pricing. Sequential color, which any single-imager projector necessarily has to use, only belongs to Baird's 1928 color TV invention and should just be left there.

      Yes the Vava Chroma. It’s triple laser. It’s the new version of the older Vava 4k. Triple lasers don’t have rainbow effect as they don’t use a colour wheel :) link in description. It’s on sale at the moment actually.

    • @noe3024
      @noe3024 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@majesticfeeds8872 Only 3-chip projectors are guaranteed not to produce RBE. All professional projectors (like those in cinemas) exclusively use 3-chip projectors (3-DLP or 3-LCoS). Manufacturers of projectors intended for home use that make and sell only 3-chip are epson (3-LCD), and sony, jvc, canon (3-LCoS). The rest are all single-DLP crap, which, depending on video source material, viewing conditions, and individual sensitivity, can produce massive amounts of headache-inducing RBE.

    • @noe3024
      @noe3024 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BuildMontage The absence of color filter wheel does NOT equate to no rainbow effect. There is still ONLY one single DLP in this projector. The three separate lasers still flash SEQUENTIALLY, and any sequential color system is wont to generate RBE. The only way not to have RBE is if there were 3 DLP chips. The goal of vava and the rest of its ilk therefore is to figure how to come out with a 3-DLP, discrete triple R, G, B laser native 4k UHD projector that costs around $5k, give or take.

    lol, there is no way anyone is setting up 120" or larger Flat Panel TV on the wall of their home. The TV wouldn't make it through the door in one piece. It would HAVE to be Modular and come apart like the Samsung Wall, but even that is astronomically priced at well over $100,000 or more. A projector screen can roll up and you can easily pick up an Ultra Short Throw projector and set it down somewhere else. I'm starting to believe that Ultra Short Throw projectors in the home will become more common place, but that does not mean TVs are done for. They will still be around, just not as commonly or maybe just for bedrooms/small rooms. Ultra Short Throw will be able to compete for the Living Room Space rather well. Combined with an ALR screen like the one from VividStorm, it will be a force.

    I don’t know. I bought a new place last year. For the basement, I bought a high 77” LG and a Nakamichi 9.2.4 sound system. It’s been great, but lately I’ve been feeling like the screen could be bigger. After researching, I found that short throw laser projectors might be a way to go along with a screen. But I am concerned about light. Even when I close the blinds, it’s still light enough. I suppose that’s minor as I can find solutions. My biggest concern is the Nakamichi sound system. It’s a soundbar with dual subwoofers and satellite and side speakers. It sounds as good as a traditional setup, sometimes better. I’d hate to not be able to use it because of limitations. At the same time, I could buy a fancy floating shelf where I could put the projector on top and the soundbar on the second shelf. My concern is if this turns out to require constant fiddling to get it just right constantly? If I did this, i was going to put the 77” in the master bedroom.

    collumated / focused light does not lose brightness over distance. Certainly not the small distances in our living rooms.
    Projecting on a bigger screen is less bright and less contrast than using the same projector on a smaller screen. The distance is not really the cause of the loss of brightness, the screen size increase with distance is.

    Benefits that the projector also has vs television: if you go for a large tv then installation is much more difficult and if the tv fails it is very difficult to take it off the wall and bring it back to the store to get it fixed. A projector screen also normally doesn't need to hide wires, for a tv you have the power supply cable and HDMI cables to solve.

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im yet to work out what is causing it... its like an over-scan glow or something. Do you think this would stop the light hitting the wall?

    • @fadzaik6343
      @fadzaik6343 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the idea I'm thinking is to apply the paint all around the edges of your picture and naturally any unwanted light will be absorbed and not noticble anymore.
      However this will heavily interfere with your installed embient lighting and a black rectangle (bezel) will be noticeable.
      Or....
      You can paint the back wall Black 3.0 and will look cool as if the screen is floating in dark space.
      My mind will go on forever lol
      But if you can fix this issue with the projector settings that would be best because the paint is very expensive.

    Andrew Robinson on his channel did a good piece on them also. I think you forgot to talk about lens life since most are laser based. I also think that ENVIRONMENTALLY, short throw and projectors in general offer big screen without the horrible E-waste that big and bigger TVs create. I can also see a good future in apartments when smaller rooms have to serve multi-purposes and something like STP’s offer more design options.

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't really forget to include anything, it was more, I chose to discuss what I felt were important. Not all UST projectors are laser - this video was more aimed at the concept of UST vs specific UST models. I personally hope and think UST will be used more not less in the future but only time will tell.

  • @AdmiralBison
    @AdmiralBison 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I reckon the future of UST/Laser tvs can beat out traditional flat screen tvs simply by convenience and price.
    *Smaller, compact and more portable with mobile versions as well.
    *Smarter projection technology - can compensate for wall coloration, can project even closer to walls, run cooler and quieter
    *Dual and even Triple screen projectors, better sound technology than flat screen 100+ Tvs.

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so for sure. They are not going away any time soon. Every new projector seems to be getting better and better and once problems like a center channel speaker for a discreet speaker setup is resolved, we will have a great option vs a TV.

    One benifit could be that you sit farther away from the projector hearing it less in silent parts of the movie.

    I had to custom build a cabinet to accommodate the center channel speaker and my UST projector. That made life so easy and I was able to have the exact size I needed and paid less than $200 for the total project. You mention ceiling-mount projectors in contrast to the UST projectors but can you ceiling-mount the UST one?
    Having it ceiling-mounted would allow for easier adjustment of the screen without keystoning, easier placement of centre speakers and minimise dust settling on the projector lens.
    In my case, it'd also minimise the chances of kids spilling their juice inside it... :D

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So the main issue is that your screen will need to be fairly low down on the wall and you will see the back side of the projector above the screen which could be distracting. AND you would need to have your ALR screen upside down too which will mean it won't reject any light from outside of the projector.

    -PRO: this UST has a laser light engine so it will last at least 20,000 hours, never needs a new bulb, and unlike a traditional projector, it can be turned on and off like a regular TV without damaging the light engine.
    -CON: this projector has horrific unacceptable input lag, around 120 ms or so. I’ve played Super Mario Odyssey on a VAVA and I could not move or jump with precision. This UST is not made for gaming.

    How did you finally get rid of the halo? Is the LED around the edge distracting while watching movies in dark? I have epson LS800 with Elitescreen CLR 3 123” and it seems to me the halo is always there even when not using keystone of any other corrections and in dark room. I am thinking of putting a “lip” around the edges of the screen to guard the light from spilling over, what do you think? Btw the reason I used UST projector is cause I can use them with CLR screens allowing to keep the windows open and that actually works for my setup, compared to an overhead projector which really can’t use CLR screen as the light from projector itself is coming from up above, so I felt this is an advantage over conventional overhead projector - or am I wrong to think that?

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think its has to do with the lens. If you clean it, it greatly reduces it. Also I noticed over time the laser drift would add to a streaking which I have seen happen with most UST projectors over time. I had the LEDs around that screen but ive since replaced it with a different screen and dont have that projector any longer as well.

    • @JoshFisher567
      @JoshFisher567 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't get a halo BUT I had to get my UST projector perfectly aligned meaning zero keystone. Keystone, outsides warping DOES reduce picture quality which is why my OCD like behavior made me get it perfectly aligned. The black frame around my Grandview 110" screen was JUST enough to absorb the halo light which I thought was only an issue with DLP UST projectors, which almost all out Epson who uses LCD but I guess I was wrong. This was with an Optama P2.
      I also think it's a requirement to have a UST ALR screen unless you have a perfectly light controlled environment. That means dark walls and ceilings also. I do wish Fresnel based screens were less cheap like lectangular based screens, which is every UST ALR screen pretty much out there that most people have seen unless you go to CES.
      The way lectangular based screens work, they only project light coming from a specific angle that ALSO only project the light/image directly back at typical user seating eye level.
      UST projector screens use springs (or some other mechanism) to attach the frame to the screen to keep it super tight for that very reason, to make them super tight.. Lectangular based screens are essentially using nanotechnology to create ridges in the screen that go out and angle down. The out part is pointed to the ceiling and the angle part is pointed towards the floor (you can hang a UST screen the wrong way and you would notice immediately). The flat part rejects light and angled part only projects light back.
      This angle is the angle that the light from a UST projector comes from. Most can offer up to 90 percent of overhead light so they are perfectly fine for daytime use IMO but you will never get OLED blacks but you unless you got like 30K for a 96" LG OLED, or you want a wait, there are some 96" to 100" LED TV's coming out with back lit zones that are affordable but aren't available in the US yet.
Fresnel based screens are based on CRT (cathode rade tube) technology ironically but have a 1.0/1.1 gain, are much brighter and look more like an actual traditional TV. Their issues are that they can be prone to hot spotting, potential glare, viewing angles and they are hard screens so they can't be rolled up which makes installing and shipping much more difficult but they can be sized at over 200"s also. That and price as they are typically 15K or more depending on the manufacturer. just flip it over for a short throw or standard throw projector as UST projectors start to warp around 150 to 160" s currently.
      So if your interested in.UST factor in a screen also, even if you have a traditional projector screen. It's almost a must have IMO. They do also make ALR screens for regular throw projectors that work in the same way only the angle light is reflected back is different but they still have issues with overhead light because most standard throw projectors are on the ceiling and with UST the light is coming from the bottom. Most people have light coming from the ceiling, not the floor so they just work out better with UST. I also think they are quite expensive also

      Better at high frame rates, and it depends on the projector - the Samsung LS9PT goes very well as does the BENQ V7050i

    Which is better CLR or ALR?

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will depend on the projector. Clr is better suited for a UST projector but you should check the recommendations from the projector manufacturer.

    Do you absolutely need a screen for short throw projectors?

    • @BuildMontage
      @BuildMontage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, but it helps improve the image in a massive way

      @@BuildMontage Thanks for the response! So which store or online store do you recommend, when shopping for screens? I'm really interested in getting a throw projector, but I don't want to spend hundreds on a screen.
