You absolute legend, my mixdown went from Davy Jones' locker type dirty gross mix to a recently cleaned toilet bowl type mix. It's not squeaky clean, but soooo much better than it used to be, thanks mr ozi
Great job with keeping it simple but effective. I watched this video when I first started doing any of this and I was so confused lol. its been about a year and since I know things better from when I first started a lot just clicked in my head. It really is as simple as 5 pieces
I am beyond greatly for this. I love the fact that you’ve went over an important topic when it comes to music production. Along with making it so understandable and fun asf. You’re a blessing dude 🖤🖤 My one and only question would be since I recently got into production a few months ago. What is the difference between a top end kick and low end kick? I’m sure it’s an obvious answer but I would love clarity haha!
You should try sticking a utility on each sound down to your preference. I go to -10 on my kick and everything else -16. That way you not fighting volume so much. Set the master to -10 and the. Remove the utility on the master when everything is mixed.
So this is weird, haven't even started the tutorial yet, and I was just thinking 'out of any artist who would be a true G and help explain to us how to do this properly' I search you up and? Boom, Mix-down AND Master video (NOT FROM 4 YEARS AGO OR SOME SH%$) from a pro and a great guy to listen to. Can't wait to watch, grabbing a drink.
Got one problem tho... When I'm cutting some frequenties with an EQ, my sound will become louder and starts clipping / going into the red sometimes. Even when this sound was hitting 0db before EQ'ing. This happens to me a lot
every time you use processing, you are changing phase and amplitude of sounds. Some of the best mixers in the world prefer to make a good mix with just panning and volume level adjustments and minimal EQ etc, so they don't alter the natural sound of instruments too much. This is not necessary in electronic music, because your sounds are already unnatural (still, if you want to add realistic instruments, don't overdo the effect chains on them or they will start sounding "electronic")
Exactly what @azraksash, you will most likely have to use a limiter or a clipper at the end of your chain to keep the elements from hitting above 0dB. Pro-L is a fav for most people, there is Gclip (free plug-in), JST Clip, heck you could even use any compressor really at the end of the chain (since a limiter technically is one sort of compression) to fix your problem. Hope that helps!
Instead of using the ableton limiter and bringing down the ceiling. You could also use a clipper to get the same result. Also curious as to if you do any group/buss processing? Could be a topic for another mixing video? One more thing, for the sub bass with the different frequencies part, a good way to get a consistent level is to just bounce out the sub midi to audio, and manually slicing and bringing down the volume of all the notes that raise the volume to a uniform db. I find this method more effective instead of using a compressor because compressors usually overly react to low end. Great vid!
But what if you want the kick and snare layered on the same hit, I can't mix them both to be -10 because then when they hit at the same time it shoots up the master past -10db
Hmmm when you bussed the drums and cuts off the lows of all the drums and put two sidechains on the bus and did nothing ,what was that for? did you skip it in post by accident? Left my drum but with no lows lol
Why do you lower after effect gain rather than input? Wouldn't it make more sense to lower -10 or -20 with a utility at the start of your effect chain rather than the output (after effect gain)?
this is great video, to be honest. Mixes sound cleaner than ever! My silly brain still gets the loudness penalty assault at the end, though. I'll master it, then the track gets turned down around 4 to 6 db. Disheartening lol

Yeah, this is nuts that he even decided to show something like this, as most producers normally dont show how to efficiently clean their mix

"Hard pan sub to left and kick to the right, that way you will have space for each instrument"
I see nothing wrong with that
This video is really worth gold. Thanks Ozi, this video will probably change the way I produce.

When you go into gainstaging near the end and add a saturator is that within the master? or on the individual channels
