MTR: Thanks for the comments. I don't have a good answer for you about doing it on your own. Most of the volcanos are in state run parks and I believe you do have to have a certified guide accompany you. Some of the lower volcanos like Rucu Pichincha and Gaugau Pichincha are hiking trails to the summits with nothing technical, so you could climb those on your own. For any of the major volcanos in parks I think you will need a guide. We found that our tour company Andengipfel Reisen to be very reasonably priced, high quality guides and equipment, safety first, high summit success rate, and very flexible. Our first tour company cheated us out of our deposit when our flight to Ecuador was cancelled by the airlines. We then worked with Andengipfel Reisen (we were their first customers) and had a fantastic experience. Tank and Jay just did another trip and summited Chimbo last week. Capitol Hiker and I are planning a return sometime in the future. Beware of hiring independent guides, as some will try to burn you out and not really help you get to the top. If you plan to climb, I would encourage you to go with a reliable tour company. If you contact Karla at AR tell her Bama Hiker referred you. She'll take great care of you! Hope this helps.
