Before I’ve decided to try box braids, I researched a lot of videos such as cultural appropriation, black culture and hair braid culture because I did not want to offend anybody. However, I thought it was inappropriate for me to talk about black culture because I’m not one of them. So the video has failed to include a detailed description regarding the hair braid culture If you are curious about the history of hair braid culture, you might want to check out some other videos. @@niccolom4556 Saying a whole race doesn't look good with a certain hair colour is just hateful. This is not constructive in anyway. And loving yourself does not mean confining yourself to only your own culture. It means appreciating other cultures (which she is doing by educating herself about the hairstyle and its history) and sharing your own with the world. And what would representing Korea even look like?? In today's world, people are sharing cultures more than ever while acknowledging that we are all different and beautiful in our own way. Just because she wears braids does not mean she does not like her own ethnicity.
I love when people can reasearch and embrace other cultures. I think that learning about other cultures is such a beautiful thing and more people should do it. I love this and your hair looks really good.

Kids get kicked out of school for their hair being in protective styles like box braids, men and women aren’t given job opportunities for wearing their hair like this til this day. We just want everyone to know that when you do these hairstyles yeah, sure it maybe cool and trendy look on you but when the trend dies and we still have our hair in locs and braids we will still be discriminated against.

I hope it was a great experience for you. Saya Lee yes it matters. Box braids weren’t JUST started to protect our hair. That’s just an addition. Braiding has been passed down and taught through many generations in black culture so it already holds somewhat of a significance to us. Black women who wore box braids would be called ghetto and still do so for non black people to adapt the style cause it’s “cool” now irks us

Saya Lee box braids can be worn as a protective style/cultural style but box braids on black people are still considered to be messy, inappropriate, ghetto etc in our society and this has very real effects in institutions including the workplace/schools where black people are looked down upon for having them. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with appreciating cultures but when people find black culture cool on non-blacks but look down on it on actual black people.. that’s where the problem lies. wow you actually did a good job for your first time next time you should get it done professionally you should go to Itaewon they have a black/ African hairdresser that does these hairstyles box braids, twists ect and next time you should bush the hair extensions out before to make it soft it would look much neater and won't unravel when you dip it in hot water.

What is she doing? She's styling her hair how she wants because braids are not exclusive to black people. Anyone can have braids if they want them and they don't have to learn the history behind them. When I went to the Bahamas I had lots of bohemian women (they're black) asking me to get my hair done, I finally caved and got five corn rows on one side of my head, they asked me to do it! And I thought they were beautiful and I have always wanted to try corn rows. I think it's a super beautiful hairstyle! But because I'm white I'm not allowed??? That's horseshit and it's racist

Many people are fine with sharing their culture like me but their is other people who don’t which I think as a black person is really stupid. I see ppl in our originating countries are more open to sharing rather then African Americans in the US bc of their discrimination we got bc of it don’t be so insensitive and do some research think about why they wouldn’t like other people doing after what they went through and it’s not racist bc a lot of black peoples don’t want any non black person to do our hairstyles. Really well done for your first time! One little advice, when you want to have curly ends, you should just braid the braids together (like two big braids on each side of your head) instead of wrapping them like you did with an elastic band. It would be much neater, and more defined👌🏾😉

You missed a crucial step before braiding you have to pull the hair and then brush it so the ends come out layered and look better and then braid your hair-hope this helps for next time xx
I'm really impressed by how these turned out. You picked up on the technique pretty well and they turned out really nice. I like how they look on you. Make sure you wrap your hair with a silk wrap and keep your scalp moisturized. Also as a black girl I really appreciate that you took the time to do your research about braiding culture and provide information to others it means a lot to me. Side note why tf are box braids $500-600 that's unnecessarily expensive
I live in Korea, and the prices here are high. If I ever do a braids later, I'd like to try at a store in a place where there are a lot of black people. The people saying my people’s hairstyles are just fashion are apart of the problem💁🏾♀️. Not talking about her, but y’all want to wear protective hairstyles not made for your hair type just cuz a model did. If y’all steady wear hairstyles not for you, you’re hair WILL fall out. If not now, eventually. We can only wear/ do so much with our hair types. Can we at least have that? (I’m glad she actually did it herself and went through the process so she could have an appreciation for the work put in, and she did a good job. So kudos to you, sweetie. Make sure you tie your hair up at night so it doesn’t frizz). Also, if you plan on keeping it in for a while, burn the ends so they don’t unravel. When it’s time to take it out just cut the ends if you can’t unravel it.

I just want to say I’m so in love with this video you look lovely with the braids and as a black girl myself I’m so happy watching this. You did your research and even did it yourself. You did it so well too I’m actually really happy to see this🥰🥰. Some small advice 1. Whoever told you getting box braids was 500 bucks lied to you cus it is NOT that expensive it’s normally between 50-100 at most and they were extremely overpriced 2. When you buy packets of hair that long. Instead of having to braid with the entire length, once you take it out of the packet fold the hair in Half or into three depending on where you want it to go down to( cutting into two is down to your butt and into three is mid back. I’m just so happy with this video I wish you luck with future braiding you and your hair are very beautiful❤️❤️
The style looks really good on you. Koreans are usually bashed for doing hair that belongs to black people but I don’t think it only belongs to one race. I really like it!

People end up being scared of doing things because it will be labelled as cultural appropriation. In all honesty, I would rather other races do braids and dreads and whatnot, because then, they get to learn. When I see a nonblack person with braids, I get happy, because mostly it means that they are willing to learn. But by saying everything people do is cultural appropriation, then why would people want to try new things? The races will end up in their own bubbles and not even try to learn about others because that is where I feel we are going. Cultural appropriation is a thing, but so is cultural appreciation. Most people (see rappers and hiphop artists from all around the world) do it not to insult anyone, but because they like it. We shouldn't deprive others of trying new things because of what we believe. I'm sorry that it is hard in America and hopefully as the time goes on, it will be better for you and other black people living out of Africa. But for now, I feel it will be better for us to allow people to learn in their own ways and not force people to always do extensive research just to do a single hairstyle. Then technically we should not be doing french and Dutch braids.
You did really well for your first time (much better than my first time) and it looks really beautiful. I would recommend brushing and moisturizing your hair before you do this because it’s such a long term style and the weight of the braids and dryness will no doubt be hard on it. Like deep conditioning or wearing a hair mask might help make the style less harsh on your hair. (Idk if you did these things tho...) Also using mouse on the braids after you finish them so they have more hold is always good, that way they stay longer... Idk if this was helpful or not to others as well but 🤷🏽♀️

As a black African woman, I truly command you for trying this out on your own and doing research about it. You honestly did great for a first time and the style looks good on you.
I'm so happy she decided to try box braids and did research when she had pulled her olive oil jel out I knew she did research but I recommend cutting your long hair packets in half and (lightly) pull the side to get a more "natural" end going plus you'll spend less on hair packs , oooo and put your hair in a bonnet at night so it last longer and you can cut the frizz of your braids when done with your hair to look neat

Well I think it's because Korea is exposed to a lot more different races now and mainly because it is the internet era. Now, people from all over can put in their two cents in comment sections and it will get to Korea quickly. Tourism has really grown there in the last few years and the young Korean soldiers get to know the American soldiers on the military base. Even like 5-10 years ago, there wasn't as much focus on Korea as there is now. Back then, Korean Lovers of hip hop could imitate their favorite artists from abroad and they wouldn't know if its offensive, as the concept of cultural appropriation is not really in Korea. A special part of the tourism there is that you can rent traditional Korean clothes and explore the palaces while wearing it. You can put your hair in their traditional hairstyles, eat in traditional settings in cultural ways , and they appreciate it. So I'm sure the Koreans who wore these hairstyles were baffled at first. Korean stylists didn't see a problem in styling Kpop stars with this hair as they may have just thought it looked cool and trendy. But this concept of Cultural appropriation went over to Korea from America when the Korean wave really started hitting the United States. People saw others getting hardcore bashed for wearing these hairstyles online and learned from the negative response . This youtuber seems like she has always had a special interest in these types of hairstyles and probably paid extra attention to those situations. Then she proceeded in a respectful way that she can maintain her interest, and also to teach other Koreans why this is a serious topic. We're all living and learning. I hope we can live without judging or assuming things about others that we don't know, but always be willing to learn and understand.
i don’t think you can just take one example of a korean knowing a western ideology like cultural appropriation to mean that ALL of korea knows what it is.
hi !! just letting you know that in other videos as well as this one she's mentioned that other koreans don't really know of cultural appropriation?? that they kind of just don't really mean any harm (usually) they're just ignorant and sometimes it isn't their fault. but that's on a case to case basis so. also we cant expect someone from another countty with veru different culture to be educated on ours ! it would be hella great though. but not as many people care that much like she does. i wish everyone cared like this. it's very refreshing to see.
i love the fact that u researched it but be careful not to leave them too long in ur hair because it can cause extreme breakage on straight hair...:/ edit: i don’t advocate for this hairstyle whether u are “appreciative” of box braids or not
Actually, someone with straight hair would probably have less breakage because straight hair is stronger. But, the style won't last as long. Curly or kinky hair is weaker.
잘 했어요 👏👏👏👏 It took me ages to do my box braids the first time because I did them small. But do them again and again, you'll get better. And yes, the longer and more the braids, the heavier it feels so when I heard it was down to your ankles I was like "RIP" 😂 Oh and a tip if you want curly ends (basically a curl pattern that looks like ramen noodles 😂); After you have finished doing you box braids plait your hair divide you hair into 4 sections and plait them so you have 4 big plaits. Plait it to the end then soak each plait in boiling water for 30 seconds ish. If you want it to by curly at the end, just soak the ends. The higher you want that curl ramen pattern, the higher you soak you hair. Then undo them, you should have a nice curl pattern for it. My mother and I discovered this method by accident (though I'm sure it's been done way before) and now we always do our box braids with curls instead of straight. But keep at it, you'll only get better at doing them.

Saya Lee yes it matters. Box braids weren’t JUST started to protect our hair. That’s just an addition. Braiding has been passed down and taught through many generations in black culture so it already holds somewhat of a significance to us. Black women who wore box braids would be called ghetto and still do so for non black people to adapt the style cause it’s “cool” now irks us

마찬가지로 흑인들이 드레드 헤어스타일로 인해 직장에서 해고당하거나 헤어 스타일 변화를 권고 받는 일이 많이 있었습니다. 때문에 하나의 운동으로 드레드를 하게됩니다. 그런데 그 헤어스타일을 패션의 용도로 이용하는 다른 인종들이 생겼고 때문에 불쾌감을 느끼는 사람들이 있게 된거죠.
또 이 헤어를 동양인이 하는 것에서 더욱 큰 비판이 생기는 부분은 현재 흑인과 동양인 모두가 인종차별을 받는 상황인데 두 인종이 서로 연대하지않는다는 인상을 백인들에게 줄수 있기 때문입니다. 이는 타 문화를 대상화 하는것은 인종차별이 아니다 라는 기득권의 주장에 힘을 실어줄수 있습니다.
반면 이런 타 인종 문화에 대한 제한이 흑인 문화를 오히려 배척하고 주류 문화에서 제외시키는 결과를 가져올수도 있다는 주장도 많습니다.
Saya Lee box braids can be worn as a protective style/cultural style but box braids on black people are still considered to be messy, inappropriate, ghetto etc in our society and this has very real effects in institutions including the workplace/schools where black people are looked down upon for having them. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with appreciating cultures but when people find black culture cool on non-blacks but look down on it on actual black people.. that’s where the problem lies. Hope I explained it well enough!

wow you actually did a good job for your first time next time you should get it done professionally you should go to Itaewon they have a black/ African hairdresser that does these hairstyles box braids, twists ect and next time you should bush the hair extensions out before to make it soft it would look much neater and won't unravel when you dip it in hot water.
also, brush/comb out the weave so it’ll be easier to braid into you hair, and don’t forget to cut the weave in half if you want it shorter

What is she doing? She's styling her hair how she wants because braids are not exclusive to black people. Anyone can have braids if they want them and they don't have to learn the history behind them. When I went to the Bahamas I had lots of bohemian women (they're black) asking me to get my hair done, I finally caved and got five corn rows on one side of my head, they asked me to do it! And I thought they were beautiful and I have always wanted to try corn rows. I think it's a super beautiful hairstyle! But because I'm white I'm not allowed??? That's horseshit and it's racist

Really well done for your first time! One little advice, when you want to have curly ends, you should just braid the braids together (like two big braids on each side of your head) instead of wrapping them like you did with an elastic band. It would be much neater, and more defined👌🏾😉

You missed a crucial step before braiding you have to pull the hair and then brush it so the ends come out layered and look better and then braid your hair-hope this helps for next time xx

I'm really impressed by how these turned out. You picked up on the technique pretty well and they turned out really nice. I like how they look on you. Make sure you wrap your hair with a silk wrap and keep your scalp moisturized.

Not talking about her, but y’all want to wear protective hairstyles not made for your hair type just cuz a model did. If y’all steady wear hairstyles not for you, you’re hair WILL fall out. Also, if you plan on keeping it in for a while, burn the ends so they don’t unravel. When it’s time to take it out just cut the ends if you can’t unravel it.

Some small advice
1. Whoever told you getting box braids was 500 bucks lied to you cus it is NOT that expensive it’s normally between 50-100 at most and they were extremely overpriced
2. When you buy packets of hair that long. Instead of having to braid with the entire length, once you take it out of the packet fold the hair in Half or into three depending on where you want it to go down to( cutting into two is down to your butt and into three is mid back.

Personally, as a black girl, I don’t care when people have braids or another cultural hairstyle. I believe that we as people shouldn’t gatekeep hairstyles, and should feel free to share our culture with others. Wish more people had this opinion, because the world would be brighter. @@nkechukwuyenum I'm not disregarding what she is saying, but the way that people are talking about cultural appropriation is becoming tiring. People end up being scared of doing things because it will be labelled as cultural appropriation.
In all honesty, I would rather other races do braids and dreads and whatnot, because then, they get to learn. When I see a nonblack person with braids, I get happy, because mostly it means that they are willing to learn. But by saying everything people do is cultural appropriation, then why would people want to try new things? The races will end up in their own bubbles and not even try to learn about others because that is where I feel we are going.
Cultural appropriation is a thing, but so is cultural appreciation. Most people (see rappers and hiphop artists from all around the world) do it not to insult anyone, but because they like it. We shouldn't deprive others of trying new things because of what we believe.
I'm sorry that it is hard in America and hopefully as the time goes on, it will be better for you and other black people living out of Africa.
But for now, I feel it will be better for us to allow people to learn in their own ways and not force people to always do extensive research just to do a single hairstyle. Then technically we should not be doing french and Dutch braids.

You did really well for your first time (much better than my first time) and it looks really beautiful. I would recommend brushing and moisturizing your hair before you do this because it’s such a long term style and the weight of the braids and dryness will no doubt be hard on it. Like deep conditioning or wearing a hair mask might help make the style less harsh on your hair. (Idk if you did these things tho...) Also using mouse on the braids after you finish them so they have more hold is always good, that way they stay longer... Idk if this was helpful or not to others as well but 🤷🏽♀️

As a black African woman, I truly command you for trying this out on your own and doing research about it. You honestly did great for a first time and the style looks good on you.
I'm so happy she decided to try box braids and did research when she had pulled her olive oil jel out I knew she did research but I recommend cutting your long hair packets in half and (lightly) pull the side to get a more "natural" end going plus you'll spend less on hair packs , oooo and put your hair in a bonnet at night so it last longer and you can cut the frizz of your braids when done with your hair to look neat

Well I think it's because Korea is exposed to a lot more different races now and mainly because it is the internet era. Now, people from all over can put in their two cents in comment sections and it will get to Korea quickly. Tourism has really grown there in the last few years and the young Korean soldiers get to know the American soldiers on the military base. Even like 5-10 years ago, there wasn't as much focus on Korea as there is now. Back then, Korean Lovers of hip hop could imitate their favorite artists from abroad and they wouldn't know if its offensive, as the concept of cultural appropriation is not really in Korea. A special part of the tourism there is that you can rent traditional Korean clothes and explore the palaces while wearing it. You can put your hair in their traditional hairstyles, eat in traditional settings in cultural ways , and they appreciate it. So I'm sure the Koreans who wore these hairstyles were baffled at first. Korean stylists didn't see a problem in styling Kpop stars with this hair as they may have just thought it looked cool and trendy. But this concept of Cultural appropriation went over to Korea from America when the Korean wave really started hitting the United States. People saw others getting hardcore bashed for wearing these hairstyles online and learned from the negative response . This youtuber seems like she has always had a special interest in these types of hairstyles and probably paid extra attention to those situations. Then she proceeded in a respectful way that she can maintain her interest, and also to teach other Koreans why this is a serious topic. We're all living and learning. hi !! just letting you know that in other videos as well as this one she's mentioned that other koreans don't really know of cultural appropriation?? that they kind of just don't really mean any harm (usually) they're just ignorant and sometimes it isn't their fault. but that's on a case to case basis so. also we cant expect someone from another countty with veru different culture to be educated on ours ! it would be hella great though. but not as many people care that much like she does. i wish everyone cared like this. it's very refreshing to see.

i love the fact that u researched it but be careful not to leave them too long in ur hair because it can cause extreme breakage on straight hair...:/
edit: i don’t advocate for this hairstyle whether u are “appreciative” of box braids or not
Actually, someone with straight hair would probably have less breakage because straight hair is stronger. But, the style won't last as long. Curly or kinky hair is weaker.

It took me ages to do my box braids the first time because I did them small.
But do them again and again, you'll get better. And yes, the longer and more the braids, the heavier it feels so when I heard it was down to your ankles I was like "RIP" 😂
Oh and a tip if you want curly ends (basically a curl pattern that looks like ramen noodles 😂);
After you have finished doing you box braids plait your hair divide you hair into 4 sections and plait them so you have 4 big plaits. Plait it to the end then soak each plait in boiling water for 30 seconds ish. If you want it to by curly at the end, just soak the ends. The higher you want that curl ramen pattern, the higher you soak you hair. Then undo them, you should have a nice curl pattern for it.
My mother and I discovered this method by accident (though I'm sure it's been done way before) and now we always do our box braids with curls instead of straight.
But keep at it, you'll only get better at doing them.
