    Went on a tour of the Gibson hollow body shop in Memphis last year and they told us only one guy has been painting their burst patterns for the last 15 years, it's quite an art to do it well. They have several people doing solid colors, but they really talked this one guy up. Too bad I can't remember his name, really too bad they moved out of Memphis... Love the vids Dan!

    I like to just spray a 3 tone burst, first with medium brown, then add some black and spray the edges. It gets pretty similar results. I also stain the wood with vintage amber first. It saves me a lot of lacquer this way. The way Dan shows is probably EXACTLY how fender did it. I've gotta try it this way.

    Is aluminium is a valid material for a pick guard? Or will it mess with the pickups?

    • @tiacho2893
      @tiacho2893 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As aluminum alloys are non magnetic it shouldn't be an issue. I have never tried it but AL is conductive so you might be able to make a usable shielding if electrically connected to the control cavity shielding. AL is soft so it might show pick scratches if it polished. Getting it anodised might be expensive, but some of the anodising colours available might make a cool design. It would also make the surface very durable.

      @@tiacho2893 I was thinking about using some aluminum Diamond plate my buddy had left over from redoing his bathroom in a Harley Davidson theme. If I can get it cut out in a neat shape... how hard would it be to inlay it into the body so it was flush?

    • @tiacho2893
      @tiacho2893 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are comfortable doing a tremolo up route or inlay work, it's really no different. It is like any body cavity route just a lot less deep. For precise fit, a purpose made routing template is a must.
      IIRC, diamond tread plate comes in the thicker and (much more affordable) thinner (1/16"). Not hard but precision for fit is a definitely recommended. I would do a couple tests on MDF or pine first. And remember that finish build up will affect the final fit.

    Damn that's very amaturish especially from Dan Elrlewine! You should know better than to believe everything that Fender tells you! They don't want anyone to make perfect replicas of their guitars so of course they're going to lie to you. The brown that you're seeing is from the clear coat of lacquer that they sprayed over the sunburst. It ages and turns more yellow at first then more brown as the years wear on. Being that this is sprayed over a yellow then sprayed with black makes it look somewhat brown although the original finish is BLACK around the edges when new. I've seen a few rare examples of 1954 and 1955 Strats that are just about as black now as when they were new.
    You can clearly see that it is indeed BLACK and YELLOW - not brown, not "Salem Brown" or any other colour. This is a name that Fender gave it as of late since there is no colour by this name in any colour palette or paint manufacturer. It looks black in the video from far away but that Strat body is brown. You can clearly see that the edge of the real Fender Stratocaster is BLACK in colouration. I always seal my bodies as Fender did with vinyl sanding sealer. Then I spray my colour over the guitar and then my sunburst which I do with an airbrush - no speckles or uneven edge around the body. Good luck with your future endevours - you'll need it if the way you do things is the same as in your videos!
