@@mf8736 Kevin Spacey gave an incredible performance as a bad guy in The Usual Suspects. It's hard to believe that he isn't a complete monster in real life, that's how bloody great of a performance he gave.
@@Zombie_Finger_Blades It’d be nice to have the budget for the battles to contain more than a hundred or so extras but I genuinely don’t think it’d work without Sean Bean as Sharpe. Bernard Cornwell even started writing the character differently in the books to make it more like Sean’s performance, since he thought it was that perfect. Can’t imagine anyone else capturing Hakeswill correctly either, for that matter.
I agree, that entire sequence is great at establishing tension. That moment where Julianne Moore is trying not to crack the glass is so wonderfully tense.
Except that one bit…where um, Nick is trying to open the RV door before it falls, and then Malcolm comes up behind him, and also tries to open the door…I think they should have revised the, um, framing and implications of that shot Ah, just find a video of it and you’ll see what I mean 😂
Something I truly appreciate about James is that he'll say a random thing a single time in a random video like "green trivia" during the Green Lantern episode and then continue saying it in every video forever
To this day, I still can't tell if that opening shot of the implication of a child being horribly mutilated by little dinosaurs being quickly edited to showing a bored Jeff is supposed to be funny or not. I saw that as a kid and was remarkably confused.
That Ship to Shore reference blew my mind. That must have been shown over here in the UK on Sunday mornings or something back in the 90's because every now and then that fucking irrepressible theme song just asserts it's presence in my head. Drives me round the twist. Have you ever felt like this?
I showed my child the "berries and cream" starburst commercial from the late 1990s where he sings about being a little lad who loves berries in cream. They were not as impressed as I still am over that little ditty.
Sorry to leave this comment a year later, but man I'm amazed someone in the UK even knows that show! It was filmed near where I grew up in Perth. That tune and the tune from Round the Twist (which I know was also popular in the UK) are so embedded in every Australian's consciousness. I had no idea Ship to Shore aired in the UK too.
OH MY GOD, hearing you two sing the "Ship to Shore" has made my freaking YEAR!! That theme song has been living in my head rent free for the last 25 years, I'm so glad I'm not the only one!
I had a feeling that ending was tacked on and wasn't the original plan. It just felt really shoehorned in to the end of the movie and like it came out of nowhere, but I don't mind it because it's a pretty great sequence.
@@starwarsnerd100 for the mobile phone moment alone, the third one is the best of the entire series other than the first one. Genuine cinema-in-uproarious-laughter moment.
For me this is one of those movies that you grew up liking it, and you thought you were with the majority, and once you started getting into the movies side of the internet you're surprised finding out that a lot of people don't like it and it has bad reviews. Yes, it's far from perfect and has a very high bar to reach following the first one. But that doesn't make it bad at all, the script may not be as good, but the film certainly benefits from still having Spielberg's vision, unlike the rest of the saga. And I'll never understand those who prefer the third one over this one, 3 has a much stupider story and visually looks like from the SyFy channel. I may be in the minority but for me, this is the last really good one in the franchise, especially after watching Dominion...
This movie is the definition of underrated. Following your points, the score to this movie feels primal (like very jungle-like and mysterious), the set pieces look amazing (very dirtied up and with great attention to detail), the VFX I would argue rival the ones from the first movie and still hold up better than many of the modern Hollywood mega budget blockbusters that end up looking dated after just a couple of years, and the look of the dinosaurs is just so good. This movie is flawed, no doubt especially the T-Rex in San Diego, but it's an overall pretty alright movie
It's a way more bloated movie than the original and that's to its detriment. Like the San Diego sequence as a whole feels like a tacked on fourth act after the movie's plot had basically already ended. It's fun, but I get the mixed reception Jurassic Park 3 is a much more streamlined movie so it has that going for it and it's the only movie where I feel like the cgi genuinely lives up to the animatronics while also having a good balance of both to make the movie as a whole feel more real unlike the newer ones. But at the same time the characters all feel like they belong in a cartoon and the plot requires a lot of logical leaps in order to make sense because of it. And it's definitely the movie where they took the turn from the dinosaurs feeling like wild animals to feeling like horror movie monsters. Both have their issues and as a whole I'd put them on the same level.
It's nearly impossible to match JP but that's not why I give this film a negative review. This film is simply not worthy of the JP name. That scene with the little girl doing gymnastics and kicking a raptor out a window is possibly worst scene in the franchise. For me the original JP is a masterpiece while everything after is a cash crab that completely misses the mark. I do appreciated Jurassic World bringing back the park element.
While it’s flawed, I have liked The Lost World since I was young. Yeah, it’s not as good as the first one but I think it’s the only good sequel to the first that I don’t mind rewatching from time to time. I liked the dinosaur chase through the game trail, when they wreck the camp, the T-Rex attacks and Jeff Goldblum and Julianne Moore.
This is because Jurassic World Dominion, which brought back many nostalgic elements of the previous films, neglected to bring back what I assume is ever rational person's favorite character from The Lost World, the sadistic and violent Nick Van Owen, who kills many and drives a van called the Van Owen, as is revealed by the Jurassic World LEGO game.
Jurassic World Films definitely brought out my love for the entire Franchise a lot more. Especially how the newer Films play out more of the Novel's story telling and using more of the Novels' source material.
I think this is the best sequel and then followed by Jurassic World for me! Jeff Goldblum once again does a phenomenal job as Malcolm and he makes the film enjoyable, he brings a nice balance of humour but also seriousness to the role and the special effects still hold in this sequel!
I mean to be fair I could just watch Jeff Goldblum twiddle his chest hair for 90 minutes while looking seductively at the camera and I would be entertained. No homo.
The camp attack is wild for several reasons. First of all, the T Rex is somehow completely silent until it reaches the camp. And also Sarah early on lectures them about not leaving food out, how to bathe, and that T Rex has a strong sense of smell. Then she leaves the bloody jacket AND open food all over the tent.
I was amazed at one point in the movie when John Hammond turned around and Morbius drop-kicked a T-Rex while blasting Immigrant Song, totally unexpected.
The things i remember from this movie - trailer hanging off a cliff and everyone having to climb up to get out, gymnastics vs raptors and the bit at the end about the T-rex having a nice stroll through the streets that feels extra tact on for no clear reason... Still better than the Jurassic world movies imo. Those manage to be incredibly boring despite how I love me a villain that thinks raptors are better for war than guns or drones.
Funny enough the only reason the T. rex is rampaging in the city at the end is because Spielberg wanted to have a dinosaur in the city it’s not like a logical next step in the plot for a reason lol
Sure it's inferior to the '93 JP, but I always absolutely adored The Lost World and JP3 as a kid. Rewatched the shit out of the trilogy vhs set. I'll happily say they are still very rewatchable and wayyyy better than the Jurassic World movies
@@hollandscottthomas I feel like people gas light themselves into believing that, cause they grew up watching 2 and 3, and were more "hardcore critical thinkers" by the time World came out
JP3 is not better as a whole than JW, but I would certainly watch JP3 any day before ever watching Fallen Kingdom, I mean one makes the dinosaurs be too monster-like and FK makes them so cartoony it's awful
@@JCOdrjones It's not like that at all. I'm one to not put too much critical thought into movies because essentially they are mostly supposed to be dumb fun. Hence why 80s/90s movies will always be my go to before modern movies, they just seem to not take themselves so seriously. The ironic thing about the JW movies is that they feel very corporate, like they gotta tick the boxes. They're just boring to me
I'm kinda disappointed that Maso didn't just double down and try to argue that this movie is just as good as the first one. I mean it isn't, but I would've loved to hear the mental gymnastics he'd use
Ever so often the theme tune for Ship to Shore plays in my head unprompted. I don't think the reference is *too* niche. I have suffered through many Australian TV shows that made it to the UK.
Ship to Shore was filmed near where I grew up, in Perth. I'm stunned that it aired in the UK. I had absolutely no idea but I did know Round the Twist was shown in the UK.
@@tdb7992 No way! Honestly, quite a lot of Aussie shows made it's way over here... I watched Round the Twist, Ship to Shore, The Tribe, Heartbreak High, Genie from Down Under and Ocean Girl (which was called Ocean Odyssey in the UK) from what I recall.
The story in the lost world novel is not great. It's the scientific discourse and action that carries it. I would give the edge to the book in discourse but the action of the movie beats the book.
This is my favorite of the franchise. I know it has it's flaws and isn't as good as the first, but it is just an awesome movie and I love it being more Malcolm-centric and seeing his character grow from happy go lucky jester to traumatized and reluctant hero. All the characters are just really cool to me, especially Roland Tembo and Eddy Carr. The darker more suspenseful tones and dangerous jungle atmosphere just really pulled me in as a kid and they haven't let me go since. I even like the little gymnastics bit Kelly does, it's set up so it doesn't come out of nowhere and it isn't unfeasible to kick a raptor out of a dilapidated window.
Even as a child I was always annoyed by the contrivances these movies would come up with to prevent people from just shooting all the dinosaurs with high-powered rifles, because that *would* work, they are just animals.
I know, right? And it hasn’t come out yet but the trailers for the third one are trying to make us believe dinosaurs in the wild could lead to human extinction. They’re not bullet proof. And a T.Rex is for sure gonna lose in a fight against a tank or military helicopter.
Jeff Goldblum is the closest a man can get to being perfect in my opinion. He’s a badass, smooth-talker, comic genius, intellect. In jurassic park alone. He’s a very cool guy
My favorite part of this movie is when Vince Vaughn's character takes the bullets out of one guy's gun just to be a dick and the guy only learns about it when all of his hunter friends are being torn apart by a tyrannosaurus and he realizes he has nothing to defend himself with. Because that's what heroes do, take away the villains one means of defense and just leave them to be eaten by dinosaurs. What a fucking asshole.
The character played by Vince Vaugh is called Nick Van Owen, who the Jurassic World LEGO game reveals drives a van called the Van Owen, a fact I consider important enough to comment on any discussion that even remotely alludes to the character so that as many people as possible learn it.
Fun fact: The scene in the beginning of The Lost World with the little girl and the compys is actually the opening of the original Jurassic Park novel. Compys featured heavily in the first book. Compys are what kill Hammond in the first book.
Even with all of our scientific advancements we are still unable to verify what type of vegetable the dinosaurs were made of. The movie took an educated guess that it was potatoes
I'm mentally preparing myself to get upset over how much they will trash JP 3. Weird visual, awful human characters, some really goofy stuff, but I love that movie fr fr
The pachycephelosaurus, the "ramming" dino, actually had a porous skull dome, meaning it was likely full of blood vessels meaning if two butted heads they'd both instantly die. It's now thought it was used to change colours for mating and other communication, hence the blood vessels.
No, no this is not at all the scientific consensus, where'd you get this from. Was it that contrarian Jack Horner? He said that, I know he said that, he's a contrarian and says a lot of dumb things like how Tyrannosaurus is a scavenger, which was so stupid he even backtracked on it. There's literally a Torosaurus skull with a healed bite mark of a T. rex. Bones don't heal on dead animals. Skull lesions in pachycephalosaur specimens aren't rare and are consistent in their nature to having been caused by penetrations of the overlying tissue by an external object, which is just one of several pieces of evidence for headbutting. Their skullroofs were also capable of healing very quickly and were very thick. If you want to read about it, here's an actually peer reviewed study on the matter, unlike the sensationalist articles Horner gets written for his stuff like that news article that said "Triceratops isn't real??? Awoooga wooga?" despite the fact that a) Torosaurus and Triceratops are far from similar enough for that suggestion to float, b) their ranges don't even overlap entirely, which they should if they were the same animal: Torosaurus appears to be spread further South, which would mean the Horner's synonymy suggestion also implies that we have only found very old specimens there and none in at any other age despite their incredible abundance elsewhere, and c), Triceratops has seniority over Torosaurus, meaning that Torosaurus would become a synonym, not Triceratops. And even if Torosaurus had seniority, there's no way the scientific community would not just make it a senior synonym for Triceratops, a taxon on which a good hundred papers were published. @@davejones9469 Happy to hear it. Horner's complete bs has become something of a particular pain point to me since I decided I wanted to do science communication (not professionally yet though haha) because he makes outlandish claims that are picked up by news outlets because they make for great headlines which people read and remember, even if it doesn't at all reflect on current studies. Horner has been right about a thing like this I believe. Might've been him that suggested that Dracorex, Stygimoloch, and Pachycephalosaurus represented different growth stages of the same animal, which wound up being true (though Stygimoloch may actually yet be a relative). It's just that most of what he says otherwise is largely contrarian nonsense. Also, fun fact, pachycephalosaurs are most closely related to ceratopsians. Hard to see the family resemblance, right? Well, the hindfeet of even giant ceratopsids like Triceratops or Torosaurus still look similar to those of their bipedal relatives, pachycephalosaurs included, and the head butting behavior is shared in both groups in some capacity, although I don't believe that it is ancestral since basal ceratopsians like Psittacosaurus bear no structures indicating such behavior.
@@thegloriouskingkronk8422 Obviously you've put the work in and know your stuff. I also read the part about stymiglioch etc being different growth stages (in Jurassic World Evolution, a pretty fun game, they're all separate dinos you can make lol) and it does make some sense. There wasn’t supposed to be raptors on the boat, common misconception. There was actually supposed to be a sequence showing how the Rex got loose then trapped in the cargo hold. You can’t see it but the wall opposite the severed hands has a giant hole in it. The T Rex crashed its head through and pulled out the captain (pilot? navigator? whatever the bot driver is called), hence the leftover hands. It was only storyboarded and was cut to give some suspense. There should be images of the storyboards that you can find

The Lost World: Jurassic Park 2 is one of the most underrated films of all time and possibly THE greatest film ever made. It's SHOCKING to me that some people say it's not as good as the first, it's BETTER!!!! MUCH MUCH MUCH BETTER!!!! Those people are haters, FOOLS!!!!
My favorite part of this movie is that all the tension and death in the movie is directly caused by Vince Vaughn and Julian Moore's characters. They kill something like 50 innocent people in this movie, including their friend, and are really just a pair of self-righteous dingbats about the whole thing.
2:52 I've read both of those books about 20 years ago, and my memory is hazy, but yeah, they wrote the first two books of the Red Dwarf series together, but then they split up and each wrote their own version of the third book, which are wildly different. Rob Grant wrote "Backwards" and Doug Naylor wrote "Last Human," and in my opinion, Backwards was the better of the two, owing largely to the fact that Doug Naylor apparently didn't do any research and didn't understand things like what gravity is or what lava is. I get the feeling that Rob Grant was the more technically minded of the two and Doug Naylor was more of an idea guy.
I'm always shocked by the hate for this movie. Ignoring the gymnastics raptor fight... This is the only movie since the original that feels like an actual movie. It has a fantastic soundtrack, it is obviously written, and directed... by people.... The Rex in the big city rampage at the end is goofy and fun but in a "summer blockbuster" way that works fine. The action set pieces (again, ignoring "they cut you from the team??") are all fantastic and suspenseful. The trailer over the cliff sequence, the safari hunt scene, the camp site attack, "don't go into the long grass!", even the raptor chase up until the silly gymnastics thing. Most importantly, this was the last time that the dinosaurs felt real. They look good, they have weight and exist in the space. They act like animals most of the time. Everything after this just featured cgi monsters plastered on screen and obvious puppets with no sense of interacting with the actors/environments. It's not as good as the original, but I genuinely think it's the second best movie in the entire series.
By my count, this is at least the second Australian young adult TV show you guys have talked about. Can we get a whole episode about this? Preferably featuring The Tribe?
Mason: "Ladybug?" @BenChinapen, suddenly very obviously the editor of this video: *cracks his knuckles and gets to work making the single greatest frame in any TH-cam video, past or future* CJ must be very happy with you.
My stepdad was playing bass at a bar in the Gaslamp District of San Diego unknowingly when this was being filmed. Mid-set he watched the T Rex go by outside. I can only imagine how surreal that must have been.
I think one of the things the old JP movies do well is having nighttime horror segments between the dinosaurs hunting and the people being hunted. Compared to the other movies, Lost World does this more often, utilizing the T-Rex's and velociraptors as if they were horror monsters.

He is absolutely great as Hakeswill…we need an HBO style Sharpe series
@@Zombie_Finger_Blades It’d be nice to have the budget for the battles to contain more than a hundred or so extras but I genuinely don’t think it’d work without Sean Bean as Sharpe. The scene with the RV and T-Rexes is still one of the most nail-biting things I've seen in a movie. Pure suspense and movie magic!
I agree, that entire sequence is great at establishing tension. That moment where Julianne Moore is trying not to crack the glass is so wonderfully tense.
Except that one bit…where um, Nick is trying to open the RV door before it falls, and then Malcolm comes up behind him, and also tries to open the door…I think they should have revised the, um, framing and implications of that shot
Ah, just find a video of it and you’ll see what I mean 😂

Yeah I never understood that moment either.
Maybe it was intended to be dark humor ?
But the girl thankfully did survive though
I saw that in the cinema and was sat there dazed and peoples laughter added to the confusion..

For all its flaws, I still feel that "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" is the best sequel to the original film.
I agree.
It has by far the best direction. It's just sadly very bloated.
I may be in the minority here but I like the third one better. The characters weren’t as asshole ish and exploring the island was fun.
@@starwarsnerd100 interesting. I thought Tea Leonie was completely obnoxious and Grant’s assistant was kind of a dbag.
This movie is the entire REASON I BECAME A MOVIE BUFF
This movie is the definition of underrated. Following your points, the score to this movie feels primal (like very jungle-like and mysterious), the set pieces look amazing (very dirtied up and with great attention to detail), the VFX I would argue rival the ones from the first movie and still hold up better than many of the modern Hollywood mega budget blockbusters that end up looking dated after just a couple of years, and the look of the dinosaurs is just so good. This movie is flawed, no doubt especially the T-Rex in San Diego, but it's an overall pretty alright movie
I like your style and words, oh wise one.
It's a way more bloated movie than the original and that's to its detriment. Like the San Diego sequence as a whole feels like a tacked on fourth act after the movie's plot had basically already ended. It's fun, but I get the mixed reception
Jurassic Park 3 is a much more streamlined movie so it has that going for it and it's the only movie where I feel like the cgi genuinely lives up to the animatronics while also having a good balance of both to make the movie as a whole feel more real unlike the newer ones.
I would pay so much money to see 90s era Steven Spielberg doing a phat *slam dunk*
Peak 90s!

I agree. TLW has it's flaws but is a masterpiece compared to the new ones.
No homo.

"It's definitely not the worst one..." *Ben zooming in on Fallen Kingdom* Thank you Ben.
this movie has incredibe set pieces, one of the most underrated action adventured movies under Spielberg's belt
Let’s get your comment upvoted 10K times so Morbius can get a 3RD release in theaters. C’mon, y’all, LET’S DO THIS! 🫵👍💪🎆🎇
Don't forget the part when Vince Vaughan looked directly into the camera and said "IT'S MORBIN' TIME"
The things i remember from this movie - trailer hanging off a cliff and everyone having to climb up to get out, gymnastics vs raptors and the bit at the end about the T-rex having a nice stroll through the streets that feels extra tact on for no clear reason...

Agreed on all counts. I can't fathom how anyone could think any of the successor films in the franchise are better than this one.

Well they aren't biological dinosaurs, they're manmade amalgamations of the real thing.
