      Much more so after extended the bowsprit! Also depends heavily on the sail config as you would expect, but definitely much better since fitting the new bowsprit, as Ubi did suffer from weather helm - see this article (www.bristolchannelcutter.org/articles/a-new-bowsprit)

      Thanks Kevin, yeah... she's a beautiful boat - one of the finest specimen's of a BCC I've seen. She's all handmade from amazing shipping timbers like Huon Pine and Teak. We're very lucky to have her!

    A great boat outside and interior. What a charming boat secure plenty of nice woods ans natural colors. But maintenance. I like the smaller Flicka 20 because more miinimalist but only for one or two people.

      Hey @psychoNeighbor - we're delighted you enjoyed the video of Ubique, and yes, she's the same design as Lin and Larry's Taleisin - but a few feet longer, and a touch wider!

      Hey Dan! I really hope you do because a BCC will change your life. Time stands still on board one of these things, and makes a weekend feel like a fortnight - it's my stress antidote!! My young kids and wife feel the same way too!

    Great Footage!!
    Looking forward to learning all I can about this boat. A couple of questions:
    1.) How is she in light wind,
    2.) Whats her best speed.
    3.) Whats best speed 24/hr
    4.) How high into the wind can she point ?
    Thanks. Subbed.

      Hey Zone TV! Thanks for the comment, and here's some thoughts re: your questions:
      1) - Ubique's a heavy boat so her light wind performance could improve. I've heard Taleisin can make 5 to 6 knots in a 10 knot breeze, but our heavy sails means we would get 4 to 5. The new bowsprit will help, as would a nylon drifter, and would perhaps reducing the rudder size (which is massive).
      2) - we've had Ubi up around 8.4 knots in 30 knots with triple reefed main and both the high-cut clewed jib (which is quite small) + staysail pulling hard. It honestly felt like a big dinghy - albeit a very stable dinghy. In heavy weather the BCC is awesome. Everything happens in slow motion, so you have plenty of time to react to changes in the boat and weather - making it a very confidence inspiring boat, especially for those with no offshore experience like us.
      3) - Can't give you a number yet as we've not had a chance to sail her over that time period, but she would happily sit at 5 knots all day long, so extrapolating that would mean 120 miles per day would be very achievable with a windvane (or extra crew) - and I have heard BCCs doing much more. I would recommend checking out some of the Pardey's books we have linked on www.bristolchannelcutter.org, as they are invaluable for getting heaps of detail and info about BCCs.
      4) - Ubi will point from around 28 degrees, although her sweet spot would be around 35-40 odd (depending on the weather), with her fastest angle being around 45-50 - which is probably approaching a close-reach anyway. It will be very interesting to see what difference the new, longer bowsprit will make (it's 1m longer), and 3.7m long from memory (that's from the sampson post BTW).
      I take it you are thinking of buying a BCC? I'll be posting more content on www.bristolchannelcutter.org shortly but I can say they are a very, very pleasurable boat to sail and explore with!

      I’ve read a few articles siting double digit speeds but I’m guessing current + downwind and maybe a bit of surfing as well. To these boats can even reach mid to high 9’s is beyond impressive. In my mind.
      Yes, the BCC is on the short list and heading up to Maine in a couple weeks to look at 2 of them. One has been outfitted as a Gaff rig (= more sail area) and looks to be in meticulous condition one is a 32 footer (which I believe is one of the BCC’s featured on the web site)
      The only down side (for me) any way is nonwrap around dining (as in the Hans Christians) and double berth..
      I think one is outfitted with electric toilet, air conditioning, and hot water, ... while nice to have are also just more things to break lol.
      If I’m honest I’m really a multihull guy but finding a slip for those is a bit too problematic. I like speed but the lady’s like comfort... lol.

    Just out of curiosity but why are these boats called Bristol Channel cutters? I’m sure your aware of the true Bristol Channel cutter which worked the Bristol Channel in England..
    Lovely looking boat but have always wondered what the connection is?
    Also I love the collie dog, he looks a little like mine.

    • @MrLeventepeter1
      @MrLeventepeter1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pill Sharks - According to John Vigor’s book titled “twenty small sailboats to take you anywhere” the boat was designed by Lyle Hess after the cutters that took coastal pilots to incoming freight boat. The boats had to be full keeled and ready to take on all weather situations including gale. Hope this helps!

    • @PillSharks
      @PillSharks 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peteypiranha83 but why are they called Bristol Channel cutters?
      The original Bristol Channel pilot cutters is like the one in my user photo, they originated from the village of Pill, somerset where the Bristol Channel Pilots evolved from..

    • @MrLeventepeter1
      @MrLeventepeter1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Spunks along dead downwind. .on a reach she really moves too. Whats her best speed ?

    • @bristolchannelcutter5073
      @bristolchannelcutter5073  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Zone TV - yeah, she's a real pleasure to sail on a reach. Pulls hard and we've had 8.9 knts in a 30-35k blow. Still a bit too much weather helm, but I think that's more to do with sail / rigging trim, old sails, and my lack of skill!
      In contrast we had 2.6 knts in 5.4knts of wind so she does OK in light wind.
