Having lived in an area frequented by elephants, I wouldn't say those people gave him enough space with his 'condition' looking for a woman. There are so many videos of people who died after being charged by elephants who were at a further distance than that. Don't fall for safari guys who are after your money and telling you it's safe. It takes just one to attack and you'll just be soon forgotten news.
@Biid21 Yes, very wise, but he would not have behaved as he did if they'd given him space before he started displaying. Isn't the point of safaris to observe wild animals without causing them to react to and change their natural behaviour. This bull elephant was possibly 'in musth' which can make a normally relaxed bull elephant (ok with vehicle's) aggressive and dangerous. They were definitely too close.... as his behaviour demonstrated. The guide (chap sitting on the front) certainly wanted some distance. The passengers, including a child, were very fortunate.... though we have no idea what happened next.

That elephant is in musth. Some bulls in musth have been observed doing this tusk digging but its meaning is uncertain. Some theorize that there may be uncomfortable swelling in the temporal glands that causes dental pain, and the digging puts pressure on the roots that relieves the discomfort.
