Jacques Tati - Soundtrack Music from 'Mon Oncle'

  • Jacques Tati (1907-1982) was a French filmmaker. During his career, he worked as a comic actor, writer, as well as director. He only made six feature-length films. This album features theme music from four:
Jour de Fête (The Big Day) • Jacques Tati - Soundtr...
Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot (Mr. Hulot's Holiday)
    • Jacques Tati - Soundtr...
    Mon Oncle (My Uncle)
Play Time • Jacques Tati - Soundtr...
Link to 'Cours du Soir' (Night Class) soundtrack music, from a vinyl album: • Jacques Tati's 'Cours ...
'Mon Oncle' was the first of his films I saw--on the big screen, in the late 1950's. Unforgettable. Humorous and charming, it doesn't have a lot of dialog--doesn't need it.
The music too is utterly enchanting and enjoyable. In some ways, to me it is reminiscent of some of Michel Legrand's 'I Love Paris' album.
    I own nothing here.
Information from album notes, and Wikipedia.
    From 'Mon Oncle':
Mon Oncle-Adios, Mario (composed by F. Barcellini)
Le Vieux Quartier (The Old Quarter) (composed by A. Romans)
Medley of three themes from the film (Romans, Barcellini)

In the 60s, my parents loved Mon Oncle, they brought us to see it the next week. Then my father loved the music so much, he found out how to send away for it. It took a long time to arrive but we got it and it was played often in the house. We owned a video of Mister Hulot's Holiday, and it was an annual Christmas eve event. We anticipated each coming gag performed so artfully by Tati and laughed even before the gag was finished. Tati was part of the thread of our family.

I saw Mon Oncle when it first was shown on television in the United States. I was quite young and forever captivated. It was almost 60 years before I saw it again and I giggled and got teary eyed and felt so good at the end of the film - now to find it on DVD.

I so love the work of Tati. Such gentle observation and physical comedy. The humor is completely free of cynicism as is Mr. Hulot. And the music is whimsically fitting - not too intrusive, but rather gently playing in the background.

I saw Jour de Fête with my mother when I was about 7 in 1951. I loved it. Around 12 years later I saw M.Hulot's Holiday and recognised Jacques Tati. I was hooked and have seen all his films dozens of times. They have a bitter sweet lost youth, nostalgia, kindly humour and wistfulness. I have never yet seen the closing shots of Jour de Fête - the little boy skipping behind the cavalcade with his colour changing balloon - dry eyed. I don't quite know why it moves me, it just does. A true genius reaching deep within us through pathos and fondness.

    • @UnclaimedFr8
      @UnclaimedFr8  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Very well put, phrcrook--thank you for posting this! Yes, such a brilliant and touching finale to the film--a fitting bookend to the similar opening upon the cavalcade's arrival. I too love Jour de Fête--so many touches of humor--like depositing the mail beneath the horse's tail in a hurry. I think the Passing Parade moving ineluctably along carries us lurching from crisis to catastrophe, leaving a vacuum replaced by nostalgia. I'm reminded of one of the all-time best lyrics I know, sung by American musician Bob Seger from his 'Against The Wind': "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then". (Of course, he was referring to a romance, but still...)

You're most welcome! I enjoy the research. I think Tati's first two films especially portray a gentle and perhaps wistful look at rural France, in a funny and often hilarious fashion. And the music--yes, the music is so captivating. Especially if you've seen the films, it plunks you back into the spot, in your mind's eye. (Plus, it's so relaxing, I've been known to fall asleep to it).

Born in the same year the movie was made.................... Love it, think Jaques Tati is one of the most underestimated actor/ director ever.

So, I've got about 20 years on you, it seems--thank you for commenting! Indeed, Tati was brilliant. And his subtle humor and slapstick is all the funnier for its being understated. So many touches in this film--the kitchen glass, and his adjusting the window in his apartment to focus the sun on a bird in a cage so it would sing. The boys on the corner with traffic. Just awesome insights. And check out 'Jour de Fêtes' if you can. Actually, all 5.
      Best Regards,
      David

Queste musiche, che tanta leggerezza e tenerezza esprimono, molto ben si adattano a quell'indimenticato capolavoro che è stato "mon oncle"

Thank you very much for your notes (I forgot to read at the top) I don't know if Monsieur Hulot's France ever existed but Heaven should be like this ( and this must be the music sounding up there) Tati always reminds us that life is so wonderful!!
