- QLS gets in the weeds with Mr. Walt and Evil Dee of Da Beatminerz. This free-flowing discussion traces the origins of a very gritty sound and frequency of 1990s Rap production. The two brothers are not above clowning one another as they recall working on Black Moon's classic debut Enta Da Stage, going crate-digging with Q-Tip, and helping to make D&D Studios a true enclave of hardcore Hip Hop. True to Da Beatminerz' name and sound, this episode digs deep.

This is the nerdiest discussion on Hip Hop I've ever seen and I loved it! If this conversation was 4 hours I would have watched.
That's what we aim for. 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓
I'm here for Walt and dee. Ty brothers!
Supa Big Respect to the Beatminerz....they flipped the original Buck Em Down version and the Remix from the same Donald Byrd song and in different dope ways!!!
Great comment/observation
Facts! They managed to get two different feels from the same sample…
One of my favourite 90's Hip Hop production teams. I still listen to that Shortie No Mass EP & the Black Moon LP 'Enta Da Stage'. To this day!
I believe they worked on Shorty's recent project the last few years too
I just had that one spinning on my platter .. shortie no … my 11 year old son loves that ish .. the beats are superb
when you grow up with records in the house you become a different type of listener early. i was listening to Bob James at 7 years old... like 1980... Sign of the Times is still one of my favorite albums today... I thank God for my musical upbringing... I grew listening to the lkes of Ronnie Laws, Jay Hoggard, Ramsey Lewis... Donald Byrd... folks like Bobby Broom and Michael Wycoff... I know the source long beofre the samplex came...
ALL HAIL THE BEATMINERZ!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this supreme interview with Beatminerz , I hope to see TR Love & DJ Moe Love interview!
UltraMag would be cool indeed. It was cool to learn of that "Poppa Large (Remix)" history...
@@QLSProducer
I remember when Evil Dee was running in urban camo fatigue in Tim Dog's "Hardcore" music video, over a ultra beat few months before they dropped How Many MCs...
I think UltraMag don't get enough flowers.
in addition to impeccable production, deep crates, the list of their collaborations is at an enviable level, not to mention connections with late Paul C. Mc Kasty (Rest in Beats king of sp-1200), tons of rare underground beat tapes, making remix for Janet Jackson (they were managed my Michaels people at some point), innovating, advancing programming drum patterns in hip hop game since 1988 - (A Chorus Line).
Nuff respect - Questlove!
Salute Questlove and his crew and Da Beatminerz. I remember always wanting to know how Evil & Walt used to accent basslines without the top end. My first machine was the Ensoniq ASR 10 (which I still own and it works) and when I learned how to LPF and HPF filter on the ASR like Evil and Walt did on their equipment , I felt I cracked the cheat code. Before that I didn't even know what to call what they were doing... I just knew I HAD to figure it out.
Thank you!
BEATMINERZ RMX FOR "PROCEED"......WHAAAAAAT.
facts.
For those of you who didn't get to experience Beatminerz Radio on Ustream... y'all missed a great time!!!
trueeee
Third. They Inspired me to put in work
@@Moy3rd Dope!
This is gonna be a goooood one
Factuals
great ep.
Happy to see Da Beatminerz still together after all these years. The music industry has a long history of siblings not being able to work together due to being at each other's throats. Notable examples include: The Brothers Johnson, Oasis, Tony! Toni! Tone!, The Gap Band, etc.
Not true of Brothers Dewgarde! They work beautifully together
now that Walt mentions they patterned their stuff off of "Sally Got a 1 Track Mind" I can see/hear it... same grit and filtering techniques. Diamond D doesn't get mentioned enough
Have you seen Diamond D's QLS episode from last year? It's a goodie. In-studio with video too. th-cam.com/video/P7Be8Gd3F0g/w-d-xo.html
Facts! That was a jewel…
Dope interview! Salute to the Beatminerz
Thank you
I absolutely love this episode. The nerdy hip hop rabbit hole needs to be explored more.
And shout out to 88 Hip Hop.
They were true pioneers. Thank you for the compliment
This is a good breakdown of the beatminerz love it
Thank you!
Shoutout to late great Al jarreau for that crooning on the theme for Moon Lighting...
Understand the flavvvv! Salute to the brothers Dewgarde!
I need to do my own Podcast for real... For you youngsters the Casio SK-1 was the start of a lot of it for a lot of people. I had cousin who had the Pt-1 and carried it everywhere. I remember watching him learn the breakdown part (where the song transitions to a more melancholy chord progression) of Prince's "Computer Blue" while riding on charter bus from Portmouth to Miami for Family reunion.
Thank you for this one Quest & crew!
Thank YOU
I'm excited to watch this episode! They are such an underrated production duo!
Let us know what your favorite part is...
@@QLSProducer thanks! Will do.
Finally. One of my favorite hip hop producers of all time, and indeed genuinely nice guys. It was over once i heard Black Moon's Enta Da Stage album, then Heltah Skeltah--straight mindlowing. Should have also asked how they feel about jay'z's public service announcement track.
Believe that's in there. Go to the 1:12:00 mark...
“I never sweat it. It's all copastetic...in this lyrical profession rappers I discredit” Fav remix from Proceed.
Word up. Classic lyrics
that older brother whipping the younger's brothers ass for touching his equipment was real. My boy's older brother had the first Technic in the neighborhood around 82. My boy let me mess with them one day when he's brother was gone. He came home while I was on them and punched my boy in the middle of his chest so hafd I hurt for him... lol, I was glad he didn't punch me too... lol
That was hella fun to listen to.
THANK YOU. It was a joy as it was happening
"Evil Dee is on the mix, c'mon, kick it!"
Legendary!
Thumpin with them brothas Beatminerz on production
🎶
HELL FUCKIN' YES, RECORDS IS ALL 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
BEATMINERZ are Sick with the filters and Nasty dutty beats. BLACKMOON - ENTA DA STAGE , ( foundational 90s Classics )
Legendary filters...
@@QLSProducer most definitely…I learned about sampling on an akai S950 at a youth centre, near my college, I flunked maths and physics because of that music workshop. I later got an akai S900 and it’s very legendary…it’s still all about your ideas, and how you use the gear. I’m glad DA BEATMINERZ , shaped their sound and vision without being funnelled into a lifeless polished sound that marvels sterility over soul. Gr8 innerview.
@@pongtrometer Thanks so much. That is dope. Make sure you check the new Beatminerz album, out now.
@@QLSProducer yeah, I got it when it dropped …album is PHAT I’m chewing that with commonsense

54:12 Wow, this is big news. I've read that "King of the Beats" was put together by Chep Nunez, arranged into a song from beat snippets that Mantronik gave him. This is the first time I've heard that someone else made the actual beats! Would have liked to hear more about that...
It's dope that you caught that...
QUEST AND PHONTE!!!!!!!!!!!
The darklordz 💯
Gratitude
The Wiz was in VA... along with Tower and later on Sam Goody's/Musicland...
Don’t forget Waxie Maxie

North Carolina had School Kids Records!📀💿📀
This isn't about the brothers... but needed to come tell you Quest what you all collectively did to this joint th-cam.com/video/ANSBN4KpOOk/w-d-xo.html is still magic. Everything about it is better than the original and I love the original. Uncle Charlie I consider one of my singing teachers. I do it now, but the younger me was something real serious. I grew up to Charlie, Stevie, and King Hathaway's riffs... (Maurice White too... later on Luther and Will D...) Song is still KILLER!
On behalf of the QLS team... thank you. We love when unreleased music still proves to reach its target and leave an impact
ike Lee is a genius. He did Appletree for Erykah.
Every Little Thing for Christopher Williams
Keep Your Hands High for Tracy Lee and BIG and a gang of other joints.
I do remember seeing his name now that you mention it…
Walt is the orginal payolla... lol
Wow. Wasn’t expecting this. Salute!!!
OH AND BY THE WAY....BLACK THOUGHT WAS RIGHT.....HE STILL IS COMMANDANT WITH A PLANET ON HIS SHOULDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LONGEVITY KIDDIE'S.....GET A GRIP.

One of the GOAT engineers and all around nice guys
I'm all in on the reminiscenting; although, I have no idea what y'all are referring 🤣
Pardon?
@@QLSProducer I'm learning about notable producers, equipment, and historical moments in music, as I watch video. In other words, I enjoy each episode.🙂
@@Angela-pi6zc That's what we love to hear. Thank you so much for sayin' so.
Sad how Quest basically interviews himself:/
Began securing Canada's capital at 15, "here is your pad, there is your pen, out ya go."
The Python of truth and logic, is constricting the means of denial and escape, that were abused by the Axis FORCE-indulging, war criminal majority.
Big PYTHONS, I remember training for that, since the age of ten or eleven.
I developed the opposite, lean, wiry and dense muscles. Had wider shoulders, till growing taller at 36.
Lately, I look down at longer narrow feet, under skinny chicken legs ..they move me about faster ..but I remind me of Olive Oyl.
Imagine that, Olive Oyl reconnoitered, investigated and is ending the Axis american invasion of Canada ..without firearms nor resources, countering one's mistaken and out of control countrymen, Axis pirates.
Well look at that, Popeyes had their butts branded by Brutus and it takes Olive Oyl to end the conflict.
