I have been talking about over buffering bins for the last two years on the FB Vermicomposting site. I had read that worms usually stay in soils of 5.5 to 6.5 ph. When it gets too neutral it can actually harm the worms. I brought it up on my channel which I finally started. Glad to see you have now.
This is the first I've heard about the calciferous gland. I've been adding crushed egg shell or oyster shell flour to provide grit, but I had no idea how good I was doing for the worms. They gobble it up. I rarely find a trace in the castings I harvest. Great information!!
Hi Emily, I enjoy your videos. I started my worm bin 3 days ago. I bought red wigglers from a local bait shop to get started but I have made every mistake you talked about. My goal is to get worm castings as opposed to worm breeding so I bought potting mix, composted manure, threw in a bunch of coffee grounds and added the worms (about 100 worms). They seem to be doing fine but I did run some packing paper through my shredder and added it per your recommendation. It's now a waiting game to see what happens. I check the bin daily, they seem to be doing fine. They tend to congregate in the bottom of the bin, I don't know if that's normal.
Nice video as always Emily, the part about protein poisoning being more about Ammonia is great info that I've never heard before. ps. You look so relaxed in this video, that recent vacation must have been a good one :)
Gerry Clough or I could have filmed this after coming home from dinner with fellow TH-camr (Anarchy Worm Bin) Tori- I had a drink. Always good to help settle the nerves! Thanks for watching as always.
I've got Black Soldier Fly larvae working over the bottom of a moist coffee filter that has chicory and dandelion root in it, does that mean anything at all as far as the pH balance of the bin goes?
Yet another great video Emily alot of my ENC cocoons are turning darker in colour so hoping for some activity next week. How much does humity contribute to the hatching we've in a period of warm wet weather over here in the UK.
Hello there, I use human & dog hair, dead palm branches, bones, I find eggs wisps, & worms in the hair & and palms, always about an inch. Hair warms the box.
1demetrabrown probably not, no. Worms prefer a SLIGHTLY lower pH of about 6-7 but at 7.5 you are still in a good zone I think. I will also caution that pH meters are notoriously inaccurate depending on the type... if your bin seems healthy it probably is. Don’t overthink it!
I have not got my cocoons yet and may not for a few more weeks so my question is can you start the cocoon bin too early? I may be 3 weeks before i get my cocoons.
People need to actually check their Ph before assuming it needs fixing first.. I’ve never seen a video where anyone has done an actual test before throwing a heap of “grit” “buffer” in 🤣👍🏽
Kaitlyn B oh BASIC AF! This Bin was started on May 4th I believe. The whole series can be found in my playlists! Thanks for watching. I was waiting on the first person to make the basic joke! You are the winner 🎉

First mention I have seen of ammonia. Thks

Great info for the person with a new worm bin and for someone who has had one a while. Thanks for sharing. Catherine
Just got into vermicomposting and your videos are great ! Thanks for the info.
Wayne Auten so happy to hear that you find my content useful!
Gotta luv the worms, great little workers!
Great info on the over feeding Emily!
Great info as usual. Love the wisps. 💕
Lilia Kogan thanks Lilia!
So cool, to see those little Bubs
I love your videos. Very helpful.
Loving this cocoon series
Wendy Lea fun, right? I am enjoying it as well.
Hi Emily, what do you use to buffer a Bin besides eggshells and oyster shells? You mention another element but I did not get it. Thank you.
Emily, what is a wisp? You mentioned they were climbing the sides. (sorry if you already answered this in a prior video).
Wisps are baby worms
@@colinm.3419 Ahhh, I should have known. Thanks!
Supreme Gecko yes, wisps are baby worms. Freshly hatched.

Very timely video for me on Ph. Thanks 💕✌️🌱
Marilyn Q hope it helped! Thanks for stopping by!
Good job
P Barnes thank you!!
U do such a job wich I can't think it's ur courage.👍💯
Amna's Kitchen thanks so much!

Other than oyster shell and egg shells, is there anything else that can can be used as a buffer grit?

Tony Whiston I honestly don’t know if air humidity plays much of a role. As long as the bin is damp, they will hatch just fine!
I have a friend saving scraps for me and she put orange pills in it. Is it ok to put them in there feeding?
kevin neel oh absolutely!
Does it help to turn the bins 3 or 4 times a week.
ptudor63 not necessary to turn the bins that frequently. Usually weekly with feedings is more than enough.

What is the advantage of starting with cocoons rather than worms? I’m new to all this and haven’t actually started my worm farm yet.
I know you did this awhile ago but....what color are the worms when they come out of the cocoon?
I new to all of this and I’ve been checking the ph of my bin regularly and it seems as if my ph is always at 7.5 should I be concerned?

"Wisps" galore here! :)
Brian Perendy awesome, right? Thanks for watching.
Not really, they should be bigger or I didn't wait long enough. @@TheCrazyWormLady
I have not used any cardboard in my 3 bins.
kevin neel give it a try!! They love it.
I have not got my cocoons yet and may not for a few more weeks so my question is can you start the cocoon bin too early? I may be 3 weeks before i get my cocoons.
Fred Walter no I think it will be fine as long as you don’t start with a lot of food.
Hey night owl. Good content as usual
Rick S I appreciate that! Thank you!
Thanks again for the confusion, ph buffer, what is it, were do i get it testing the ph ,how you leave more Questions than answers.
I love you crazy worm lady😍😘😍

So simple, yet somehow ???
Wayne Tadlock right?!
How old is this bin?
Basic bin...Basic B!!!! 😆
Sorry, had too.

You got more f,en drama then any body, if it's not the mites it's mold or ph,your bin always looks to dry. How bout just getting to the friggin point.
