It was such a small part, but it really hit me how heartbroken and caring the midwives were during the birth scene: they truly seemed to want to help her, and not just out of obligation/duty.
That dragon fight was also a good reminder that no one can control a dragon 100%. That fight started between Luke and Aemond and ended between Arrax and Vhagar.
Is mostly because both of the raiders here are inexperienced. One thing is to fly around with it and another to use the dragon to fight. Of course, Luc was afraid and his dragon felt that, and Vhagar can’t tell that Aemond was just pranking Luc.

LMAO I love how stressed Adam looks and the look of disbelief when Jay was like "no they should go." Rhaenyra had such a bad week, she lost her father, her unborn child, and her son Lucerys. I think Daemon was extremely high strung but he really thought that Viserys was killed and also he realized that Viserys never intended to make him the heir which was another gut punch. I like how you guys were able to point out the emotional undertones at some points in the episode. A lot of people think Corlys randomly switched to supporting Rhaenyra but it was what Rhaenys said paired with his love of Baela, Rhaena, Jace, Luke, and Joffrey that made him change his mind about staying out of it.
Yeah the editing cut after Jay said it was time for them to own up to immediately Adam sitting back in his seat with the look of a very high-strung and paranoid Beaker with glasses on. lol.

Jay and Adam, you're good folks. Jay, you're a dude who wears his heart on his sleeve and I love that about you. It's genuinely a nice thing to see two guys who aren't afraid of emotions when something they're watching is really difficult.
Normally Arrax would have speed and maneuverability. But he's struggling to fly in the storm. Also Arrax has never seen combat. He panicked and attacked Vhagar.

One of the interesting aspects of the show is that it's very clearly showing that dragons aren't always an advantage. They are sentient creatures that don't always obey. They are powerful, but unpredictable. Arrax attacked Vhagar against Luke's wishes. Aemond was yelling, "No!" Neither listened, and now war is inevitable. One of the showrunners gave an interview where he explained that the reason Viserys never tried to claim a second dragon after Balerion died was because he sensed just how dangerous they are.
King Viserys warned in the 1st episode that it's an illusion that humans can control the dragons ("The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. They're a power man should never have trifled with. One that brought Valyria its doom.") 🤔 We saw in this episode that Aemond messed up thinking he could instigate the dragons & that there wouldn't be consequences for playing with these beasts. Aemond realized, "I done F***ed up!" 😬🐉🐉🔥🔥
My expectations were through the roof. I tried to not get them up but it's been years of anticipation. And damn did it not disappoint. This is what on par with the first couple of seasons of GoT.

Yeah both their dragons didn’t listen to them. The kind even said the biggest illusion there is that they’ve convinced themselves they can control the dragons. Luke’s dragon acted on the defense even tho luke tried to get him to leave. Aemond just wanted to freak his nephew out a bit, his dragon had other ideas after being attacked.

it's amazing how they managed to miss both of the dragon riders screaming at their clearly out of control dragons to obey to them, as well as the subtitles, as well as the multiple times aemond has exclaimed "no!"
It's irritating, but does it actually changes the outcome of the scene, truly? It does make it more tragic and they miss a ton of nuance, but at the end of the day, Aemond still made his senior war dragon chase his 14 yo nephew and small Arrax during a storm. Should've known he was signing their death sentences then and there.
Certain fans are suuuuper pissed that Daemon choked Rhaenyra when she started talking peace and prophecies like Viserys, or that Aemond didn't intentionally kill Luke, but I loved it. Aemond is so Mr. Drama Prince with his evil pirate gear and his over the top dragon and gaudy freakin eyehole sapphire. Turns out he's just all for show and he can't even handle that monster truck of a dragon. I lol'd. And frankly I was surprised Daemon didn't lose his sh*t even more over being left out of the SOIAF for-heirs-only club.
It is the violence come home to the domestic space. Daemon is the blood of the dragon… if anyone has issues … they need to see how Daemon is consistent with his character. To leave his home life free of violence would be totally absurd. He’s a grey character - all will be in Hot D!

King Jahaerys wasn't her grandfather. Her grandfather, Baelon, flew Balerion. Viserys is the nephew of the former king, Jahaerys, who is Rhaenrya's grand-uncle. Vermithor was his dragon. He's the king at the very beginning of Ep1. And Vermithor has a mate that king Jahaerys' wife rode. Silverwing I think she's named.
Such an Awesome Episode and sad it's the end of the Season. Aemond probably just wanted F with Luke but things got out of control and both lost control of their dragons. Reminds me of what Viserys said, "The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion." RIP Luke/Arrax.
It's also a very logical extension of the kid brawl earlier in the season. Aemond is a formerly bullied kid who levelled up and gained a huge shot of confidence from bagging the biggest sentient nuke on the continent. He likes to run his mouth and flex on the other kids. In this episode, he might have taken Luke's eye in Storm's End if he could have gotten away with it, but ultimately would have been satisfied with sending Luke crying home to his mother with a brown stain in his britches. In the kid brawl, he picks up a rock and brandishes it; threatens to feed the other kids to his dragon until they back off. He then _lowers_ the rock and reverts to taunting, at which point Jace rushes him with a knife and shit hits the fan. In both situations, he was waving his weapon around to intimidate the others, but didn't intend on actually following through with his threats. Unfortunately for Aemond - and for Luke - a 200 year old sentient war machine is not a rock, and you don't get to play like that. Aemond fucked around, and everybody is about to find out.
I agree and would go even further and look at how he was raised. With Visery's being sick, Aemond has been brought up by Alicent, Otto & Ser Crispin. All 3 have done a terrible job raising him because of their own issues. Aemond is ill disciplined, aggressive & reckless. Those 3 enabled his behaviour and have not made him accountable for his actions. It's similar to the terrible job they have done with Aegon. In contrast, Rhaenyra has raised her sons much like how her father raised her. They aren't perfect or blameless but they listen to her.

He was looking like a school shooter the first time we see him. People like Aegon aren't raised that way. You're born with that kind of propensity. There is nothing in Alicent, Criston or Otto's character that he learned his proclivities from. In the books he's also a ped-oh-phile, I think. They found him getting a B J from an underaged kid in that fighting pit. All his caretakers ever did was tell him not to be a screw up. Luke, Jace and Helaena are just normal kids, beside one being a dragon dreamer. I feel Aemond could have turned out differently w/o the bullying. But Aegon would have always been Aegon.

@@jakkeday1 Who is or isn't king is not a matter of who is good. It's a matter of who is next in the line of succession. The realm will function pretty much the same regardless of who is ruling. There was no big difference for the everyday citizen between Robert and Joffrey. We spend time with Joffrey and know he was terrible, but ultimately the commoners' lives changed little. By law Aegon is the rightful heir, regardless of what Viserys wished. Viserys could only push his unlawful choice while he lived. Something he stubbornly refused to accept and prepare for. Like everything else inconvenient during his reign he ignored it. Given the world he lived in and his health he should have abdicated the throne and coronated Rhaenyra while he lived. He could have made Rhaenyra or Daemon his hand. But he was a fail king. People keep trying to apply their modern day western sensibilities to a fantasy world based on medieval Europe. These people aren't having free elections. They're not running on public policies. Alicent knows Aegon is a sex addict. I don't think they knew the full details about other things. The show is better in that the Greens aren't mustache twirling black and white villains. In the book I think they are all Joffreys. Even Alicent, who was never Rhaenyra's childhood friend.
For someone who has never had children to kinda of already have that experience, emma d’arcy does a fantastic job at executing how excruciatingly painful childbirth can be. In cases especially relative to that time period.
The crown Eggin wore was The Conqueror’s crown, also worn by Maegor the Cruel. Rhaenyra has King Aenys’ crown that we saw Jaehaerys and Viserys also wear. Two very different crowns with two VERY different histories.😵💫
To be fair, had Aemond not gone rogue, Luke would have been fine. And as modern day people looking at children going to war, it naturally feels wrong. But this is a different world where this is normal. Also, while Aemond was being a bully and a dick, it was their dragons that actually went in to harm the other. Arrax, sensing Luke's fear and probably his own, lashed out and unfortunately it was at the fucking war criminal nuke that is Vhagar. It just proves Viserys right when he told Rhaenyra they never should have believed themselves foolish enough to think they could control the dragons. It's also the exact opposite of how Daemon sees the dragons. And as much as I hate the birthing scenes, I do greatly appreciate them. Aemma said in the very first episode it was the woman's battlefield and we've seen that time and time again. And I find it so interesting how absolutely horrified we all are collectively by childbirth and yet when we see the man's battlfield we cheer. It's a really fascinating question to make us ask ourselves.
Aemon learned the first lesson of fighting on dragonback: you have to have a strong enough will do direct your dragon once her blood gets up from getting wounded.
Can we PLEASE talk about the fact that Aemond seemingly only has an eyepatch for the sole purpose of taking it off for dramatic effect at the right moment? He's got a goddamn sapphire eye, he doesn't need the patch!!!! Why's it there!!!!! Aemond is barely an adult himself, has never seen real war or even a real battle, and had a drastic surge of confidence after he tamed Vhagar. That look of his at the end is him realizing that yeah, you fuck around, you find out. He 100% thought he could control Vhagar but Vhagar is a thousands year old war dragon. He's flying on a literal weapon of mass destruction and is only in control so long as she allows him to be. And he's smart, so at the end he's got to realize just how badly he fucked up. That's the consequences of his actions catching up to him lol And the consequences are all-out war all because he wanted to be the big man on campus and act like a bully towards a kid a quarter his size. And on top of all that, his mom's gonna be pissed.
For the last 10 minutes, Adam is just like NOOOO THEYRE GOING TO DIE. I watched that dragon chase scene with my eyes closed; just listening because I couldn't bear to watch Luke die.

They can’t afford a traitor amongst themselves. Rhaenyra is indisposed. All he was doing besides that was sending ravens. The greens had at least two days ahead of them. If she wants to claim for the throne, they can’t wait. He was protecting the family. 🙄 why so many missed this??😡

That final scene is like ending a series about pre-Great War tensions with someone informing the Austrian Emperor that Franz Ferdinand had just been assassinated. All hell is about to break lose.
So for your information, Daemon was singing to Vermithor (as he mentioned in the prior scene) he was the dragon to King Jaeharys the king you see in very beginning who made Viserys the King. Also Vermithor is the 2nd largest dragon in the world right now.
Literally in episode 1 they setup the idea that the Targarian's ability to control the dragons is an illusion. Dragons do what they want, and today that started a war.
They both said no to their Dragons. They forgot that just because they are Targaryen Dragon Riders does not mean they can control the wild animals instinct.
Or Luc had control of his. Or Rhaenys just burned all the Greens. Or Viserys abdicate the throne and coronate Rhaenyra before he died. He wasn't even ruling and everyone could see he was a walking corpse.

It's surprising how many people seem to miss them telling their dragons no, stop, and obey. It's the illusion of controlling the dragons that Visyres alluded to earlier in the season.
Aemond was just toying with Luke. However, Luke lost control (you could hear him yelling) of Arrax and, out of fear, Arrax attacked. Vhagar is an old war dragon, she was around with the original Aegon the Conqueror, she wasn't going to let some upstart little dragon attack her. Aemond was shouting at her to obey but she did her own thing. Viserys said at the start of the show that their control of the dragons is an illusion.
The book readers are complaining because in the book Aemond really intends to kill Lucerys and Arrax but here it seems their dragon become adamant and unable to take orders from their riders so Vhagar takes a bite on Arrax leading to Lucerys death
What I’ve heard about the books though is that they’re unreliable narrators. No one could know Aemond’s intentions for sure AND the greens either accept his reputation as a kinslayer or admit that he wasn’t able to control the giant dread chonk
Those arent real book readers. They probably just wiki'd it. Real book readers understand that the source material was written as a history book by a maester from a citadel who didn't have first-hand knowledge of the events. He wrote it using sources who also didn't have first-hand account of the things they're describing most of the time. Obviously no one but Luke and Aemond really knew what happened in the skies at that time.
As Viserys said _“The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion."_ Aemond seemed to have somewhat decent control over his dragon at the start but he's still young and Vhaegar is nearly 200 being a veteran of 100s of battles. Meanwhile Lucerys seemed to have generally poor control of his dragon full stop and Arrax reacted to the stress and fear by attacking Vhaegar. Vhaegar then did what any battle experienced dragon would do in such a situation and reacted to defend herself and her rider with Aemond lacking the experience to make her stop. Aemond very clearly was only being a spiteful jerk and trying to terrify his nephew, he seemed completely dismayed that he had actually killed Lucerys. Something which I believe is a great improvement over the source material. It's one of the reasons I believe the Dance is going to be a mess - It's a battle of dragons, the majority of which have never seen battle with riders who've never flown into battle. Just a FYI the dragon Daemon went down to is Vermithor, King Jaehaerys' Dragon. It's probably the second largest dragon in existence after Vhaegar.
I totally agree wiwth your assessment of the show...I was reluctant to start watching it because I'm still feeling so betrayed over how bad the final season of Game of Thrones was. But I gave it a try, thought the first episode was was kind of meh with mediocre visual effects, and then something totally unexpected happened. It started getting better and better with each successive episode and I am SO glad I gave it a chance. It was absolutely amazing and I'm so sorry the season is already over. I'm already salivating for season 2. And if Paddy Considine doesn't win all the awards for his beautiful performance as Viserys, I'm going to be very, very displeased.
He also took her to a whorehouse, made her the target of salacious rumors that could ruin her reputation, and bragged about it. Also, he banged Rhaenyra on the day of his wife's funeral. Truly husband of the year.

Yeah, because Daemon sees anyone outside a very select bubble of people as non-entities, Rhea Royce being one such ‘non-entity’ to him. I think you’re weird for being hung up on literally just the label of ‘wife’ instead of acknowledging he obviously makes exceptions for people that generally are family and Valyrians. The shock is that we know he plays favourites and only reserves any semblance of regular morals towards his family, especially Rhaenyra. The thing is her ‘exception’ to his rage is really just being higher up on his rage limit than other people, and this episode it finally exceeded to the point he would lash out at her too. The only thing is he prolly really would’ve choked to death anyone else besides her. If it was another NPC, they’d be dead just for him to vent.
I honestly don't think Rhea's death was ever supposed to be an indicator of how his relationship with Rhaenyra would go. Sure, they were married, but Daemon didn't care about Rhea more than any other person he has killed. It was an arranged marriage that only drove him away from his family, he hated her and they were never intimate, be that physically or emotionally. Rhaenyra and Viserys, however, were the two people he ever gave two fucks about. They are "his blood". And also, we weren't meant to believe they had any problems for 6 long years in ep 8, they seemed pretty in tune with each other. I think this is definitely gonna be more of an isolated thing (as far as physical violence goes) just to show how crushed he was by the confirmation Viserys never considering him his heir, and receiving those news after the death of his daughter AND his brother after having his wife's crown usurped was more than enough to make him lose it
You're right. Aemond didn't want to kill Lucerys. Unfortunately he was the cause of it. He only intended to taunt and scare him, which in turn put Lucerys's dragon on edge. It attacked Aemond's dragon because of that. He was trying to protect Lucerys and himself. Lucerys was telling him "No, serve me." But it didn't listen. And then Aemond's dragon retaliated from that and killed them. And Aemond was telling his dragon no as well. It really sucks. Aemond is definitely a bit crazy but he was not intending that.
The guy Daemon killed to substitute for Laenor was buried among royalty in a state funerel. In medieval-type society that's a good trade off. (Fixed it Adam)
No, but what happened to Luke was both against the law and expectation(if you didn't read the book). There was no reason for him to be in danger in the context it happened. He was an official messenger, they are not yet officially at war, and he is high-born. A prince or a high enough nobleman is not to be killed outside of the battlefield or post-trial. Even if the greens wanted to declare war at Stormsend they at most should have taken him hostage. It is clear that even Aemond didn't think he would actually kill him, but he lost control. In one stupid move, he managed to become a kinslayer and start a war that can not end without one side of the family wiped out.

One of the interesting aspects of the show is that it's very clearly showing that dragons aren't always an advantage. They are sentient creatures that don't always obey. They are powerful, but unpredictable.
Arrax attacked Vhagar against Luke's wishes. Aemond was yelling, "No!" Neither listened, and now war is inevitable.
One of the showrunners gave an interview where he explained that the reason Viserys never tried to claim a second dragon after Balerion died was because he sensed just how dangerous they are.

King Viserys warned in the 1st episode that it's an illusion that humans can control the dragons ("The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. Yeah both their dragons didn’t listen to them. The kind even said the biggest illusion there is that they’ve convinced themselves they can control the dragons. Luke’s dragon acted on the defense even tho luke tried to get him to leave. Aemond just wanted to freak his nephew out a bit, his dragon had other ideas after being attacked.

It's irritating, but does it actually changes the outcome of the scene, truly? It does make it more tragic and they miss a ton of nuance, but at the end of the day, Aemond still made his senior war dragon chase his 14 yo nephew and small Arrax during a storm. Should've known he was signing their death sentences then and there.
Certain fans are suuuuper pissed that Daemon choked Rhaenyra when she started talking peace and prophecies like Viserys, or that Aemond didn't intentionally kill Luke, but I loved it. Aemond is so Mr. Drama Prince with his evil pirate gear and his over the top dragon and gaudy freakin eyehole sapphire. Turns out he's just all for show and he can't even handle that monster truck of a dragon. I lol'd. And frankly I was surprised Daemon didn't lose his sh*t even more over being left out of the SOIAF for-heirs-only club.
It is the violence come home to the domestic space. Daemon is the blood of the dragon… if anyone has issues … they need to see how Daemon is consistent with his character. To leave his home life free of violence would be totally absurd. He’s a grey character - all will be in Hot D!

King Jahaerys wasn't her grandfather. Her grandfather, Baelon, flew Balerion.
Viserys is the nephew of the former king, Jahaerys, who is Rhaenrya's grand-uncle. Vermithor was his dragon. He's the king at the very beginning of Ep1. And Vermithor has a mate that king Jahaerys' wife rode. Silverwing I think she's named.
The dragon Daemon was singing to is Vermithor, also around a hundred years old. He's the next largest and oldest after Vhagar.
Such an Awesome Episode and sad it's the end of the Season. Aemond probably just wanted F with Luke but things got out of control and both lost control of their dragons. Reminds me of what Viserys said, "The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion." RIP Luke/Arrax.
It's also a very logical extension of the kid brawl earlier in the season. Aemond is a formerly bullied kid who levelled up and gained a huge shot of confidence from bagging the biggest sentient nuke on the continent. He likes to run his mouth and flex on the other kids. In this episode, he might have taken Luke's eye in Storm's End if he could have gotten away with it, but ultimately would have been satisfied with sending Luke crying home to his mother with a brown stain in his britches. In the kid brawl, he picks up a rock and brandishes it; threatens to feed the other kids to his dragon until they back off. He then _lowers_ the rock and reverts to taunting, at which point Jace rushes him with a knife and shit hits the fan.
In both situations, he was waving his weapon around to intimidate the others, but didn't intend on actually following through with his threats. Unfortunately for Aemond - and for Luke - a 200 year old sentient war machine is not a rock, and you don't get to play like that. Aemond fucked around, and everybody is about to find out.
I agree and would go even further and look at how he was raised. With Visery's being sick, Aemond has been brought up by Alicent, Otto & Ser Crispin. All 3 have done a terrible job raising him because of their own issues. Aemond is ill disciplined, aggressive & reckless. Those 3 enabled his behaviour and have not made him accountable for his actions. It's similar to the terrible job they have done with Aegon.
In contrast, Rhaenyra has raised her sons much like how her father raised her. They aren't perfect or blameless but they listen to her.

In the books he's also a ped-oh-phile, I think. They found him getting a B J from an underaged kid in that fighting pit. All his caretakers ever did was tell him not to be a screw up. Luke, Jace and Helaena are just normal kids, beside one being a dragon dreamer. I feel Aemond could have turned out differently w/o the bullying. But Aegon would have always been Aegon.

@@jakkeday1 Who is or isn't king is not a matter of who is good. It's a matter of who is next in the line of succession. The realm will function pretty much the same regardless of who is ruling. There was no big difference for the everyday citizen between Robert and Joffrey. We spend time with Joffrey and know he was terrible, but ultimately the commoners' lives changed little. By law Aegon is the rightful heir, regardless of what Viserys wished. Viserys could only push his unlawful choice while he lived. Something he stubbornly refused to accept and prepare for. Like everything else inconvenient during his reign he ignored it. Given the world he lived in and his health he should have abdicated the throne and coronated Rhaenyra while he lived. He could have made Rhaenyra or Daemon his hand. But he was a fail king. People keep trying to apply their modern day western sensibilities to a fantasy world based on medieval Europe. These people aren't having free elections. They're not running on public policies.
Alicent knows Aegon is a sex addict. I don't think they knew the full details about other things. The show is better in that the Greens aren't mustache twirling black and white villains. In the book I think they are all Joffreys. Even Alicent, who was never Rhaenyra's childhood friend.
The worst part about Luke getting the craunch, is the kinslaying sepheroth is now guilty of.

For someone who has never had children to kinda of already have that experience, emma d’arcy does a fantastic job at executing how excruciatingly painful childbirth can be. In cases especially relative to that time period.
The crown Eggin wore was The Conqueror’s crown, also worn by Maegor the Cruel. Rhaenyra has King Aenys’ crown that we saw Jaehaerys and Viserys also wear. Two very different crowns with two VERY different histories.😵💫
To be fair, had Aemond not gone rogue, Luke would have been fine. And as modern day people looking at children going to war, it naturally feels wrong. But this is a different world where this is normal.
Also, while Aemond was being a bully and a dick, it was their dragons that actually went in to harm the other. Arrax, sensing Luke's fear and probably his own, lashed out and unfortunately it was at the fucking war criminal nuke that is Vhagar. It just proves Viserys right when he told Rhaenyra they never should have believed themselves foolish enough to think they could control the dragons. It's also the exact opposite of how Daemon sees the dragons.
And as much as I hate the birthing scenes, I do greatly appreciate them. Aemma said in the very first episode it was the woman's battlefield and we've seen that time and time again. And I find it so interesting how absolutely horrified we all are collectively by childbirth and yet when we see the man's battlfield we cheer. It's a really fascinating question to make us ask ourselves.

Aemon learned the first lesson of fighting on dragonback: you have to have a strong enough will do direct your dragon once her blood gets up from getting wounded.
Can we PLEASE talk about the fact that Aemond seemingly only has an eyepatch for the sole purpose of taking it off for dramatic effect at the right moment? He's got a goddamn sapphire eye, he doesn't need the patch!!!! Why's it there!!!!!
Aemond is barely an adult himself, has never seen real war or even a real battle, and had a drastic surge of confidence after he tamed Vhagar. That look of his at the end is him realizing that yeah, you fuck around, you find out. He 100% thought he could control Vhagar but Vhagar is a thousands year old war dragon. He's flying on a literal weapon of mass destruction and is only in control so long as she allows him to be. And he's smart, so at the end he's got to realize just how badly he fucked up. That's the consequences of his actions catching up to him lol And the consequences are all-out war all because he wanted to be the big man on campus and act like a bully towards a kid a quarter his size. And on top of all that, his mom's gonna be pissed.

So for your information, Daemon was singing to Vermithor (as he mentioned in the prior scene) he was the dragon to King Jaeharys the king you see in very beginning who made Viserys the King. Also Vermithor is the 2nd largest dragon in the world right now.
Literally in episode 1 they setup the idea that the Targarian's ability to control the dragons is an illusion. Dragons do what they want, and today that started a war.

When the twin showed up with a visarys crown, I got chills when he recited his vow to Rhaenyra I cried this scene for me was phenomenal
Aemond was just toying with Luke. However, Luke lost control (you could hear him yelling) of Arrax and, out of fear, Arrax attacked. Vhagar is an old war dragon, she was around with the original Aegon the Conqueror, she wasn't going to let some upstart little dragon attack her. Aemond was shouting at her to obey but she did her own thing. Viserys said at the start of the show that their control of the dragons is an illusion.

The book readers are complaining because in the book Aemond really intends to kill Lucerys and Arrax but here it seems their dragon become adamant and unable to take orders from their riders so Vhagar takes a bite on Arrax leading to Lucerys death
What I’ve heard about the books though is that they’re unreliable narrators. No one could know Aemond’s intentions for sure AND the greens either accept his reputation as a kinslayer or admit that he wasn’t able to control the giant dread chonk
Those arent real book readers. They probably just wiki'd it. Real book readers understand that the source material was written as a history book by a maester from a citadel who didn't have first-hand knowledge of the events. He wrote it using sources who also didn't have first-hand account of the things they're describing most of the time. Obviously no one but Luke and Aemond really knew what happened in the skies at that time.

Aemond seemed to have somewhat decent control over his dragon at the start but he's still young and Vhaegar is nearly 200 being a veteran of 100s of battles.
Meanwhile Lucerys seemed to have generally poor control of his dragon full stop and Arrax reacted to the stress and fear by attacking Vhaegar.
Vhaegar then did what any battle experienced dragon would do in such a situation and reacted to defend herself and her rider with Aemond lacking the experience to make her stop. Aemond very clearly was only being a spiteful jerk and trying to terrify his nephew, he seemed completely dismayed that he had actually killed Lucerys. Something which I believe is a great improvement over the source material.
It's one of the reasons I believe the Dance is going to be a mess - It's a battle of dragons, the majority of which have never seen battle with riders who've never flown into battle.

I totally agree wiwth your assessment of the show...I was reluctant to start watching it because I'm still feeling so betrayed over how bad the final season of Game of Thrones was. But I gave it a try, thought the first episode was was kind of meh with mediocre visual effects, and then something totally unexpected happened. It started getting better and better with each successive episode and I am SO glad I gave it a chance. It was absolutely amazing and I'm so sorry the season is already over. I'm already salivating for season 2. And if Paddy Considine doesn't win all the awards for his beautiful performance as Viserys, I'm going to be very, very displeased.

Yeah, because Daemon sees anyone outside a very select bubble of people as non-entities, Rhea Royce being one such ‘non-entity’ to him. I think you’re weird for being hung up on literally just the label of ‘wife’ instead of acknowledging he obviously makes exceptions for people that generally are family and Valyrians.
The shock is that we know he plays favourites and only reserves any semblance of regular morals towards his family, especially Rhaenyra. The thing is her ‘exception’ to his rage is really just being higher up on his rage limit than other people, and this episode it finally exceeded to the point he would lash out at her too.
The only thing is he prolly really would’ve choked to death anyone else besides her. If it was another NPC, they’d be dead just for him to vent.
I honestly don't think Rhea's death was ever supposed to be an indicator of how his relationship with Rhaenyra would go. Sure, they were married, but Daemon didn't care about Rhea more than any other person he has killed. It was an arranged marriage that only drove him away from his family, he hated her and they were never intimate, be that physically or emotionally. Rhaenyra and Viserys, however, were the two people he ever gave two fucks about. They are "his blood". And also, we weren't meant to believe they had any problems for 6 long years in ep 8, they seemed pretty in tune with each other. I think this is definitely gonna be more of an isolated thing (as far as physical violence goes) just to show how crushed he was by the confirmation Viserys never considering him his heir, and receiving those news after the death of his daughter AND his brother after having his wife's crown usurped was more than enough to make him lose it

You're right. Aemond didn't want to kill Lucerys. Unfortunately he was the cause of it. He only intended to taunt and scare him, which in turn put Lucerys's dragon on edge. It attacked Aemond's dragon because of that. He was trying to protect Lucerys and himself. Lucerys was telling him "No, serve me." But it didn't listen. And then Aemond's dragon retaliated from that and killed them. And Aemond was telling his dragon no as well. It really sucks. Aemond is definitely a bit crazy but he was not intending that.

No, but what happened to Luke was both against the law and expectation(if you didn't read the book). There was no reason for him to be in danger in the context it happened. He was an official messenger, they are not yet officially at war, and he is high-born. A prince or a high enough nobleman is not to be killed outside of the battlefield or post-trial. Even if the greens wanted to declare war at Stormsend they at most should have taken him hostage.
It is clear that even Aemond didn't think he would actually kill him, but he lost control. In one stupid move, he managed to become a kinslayer and start a war that can not end without one side of the family wiped out.
