I wish i could afford any of his classes because these videos are amazing. I have learned an insane amount of information and often feel like i need a notebook for videos especially when it comes to series videos (21st century long Hunter, Bushcraft on a budget etc). Loc the videos, Dave!
Tie it off center! What a simple idea. I cant tell you how many times Ive struggled to get the toggle back out... feelin dumb haha. Dig the shirt bud. Thanks for the video.
The canteen trick is so awesome and yet so simple. Things like that make me feel so stupid. Many thanks for all you do to educate those of us who are less informed.
The information concerning the toggles is great. If you are using a cheap, poly tarp--many of our number do--the toggles reduce the stress on the grommets, preventing the grommets from tearing out of the tarp. And if you choose to wear a blanket on a cold day, the toggle and a piece of rope make a very convenient belt.
That's cool.. I need the knot tying practise though.. once I own the skill.. maybe I'll use them more. I'd hate to start using toggles all the time and get lazy about tying knots. But that's just me. Thanks for the video
your maneuver of getting your water/cook bottle out of the fire has added to the reasons I've been seriously considering switching over to this style of water bottle. as an added, I use my small toggle mainly off the inside of my tarp/tent to hang my personals, an candle lantern. looks like 2014 is going to be a hell'ava good an busy year for you an yours. i'm glad
Awesome video. Glad I watched it. Put toggles to work today as I scouted my new Spring camp site. Especially the toggle/rope hanger for my pack. Thanks for all your videos.
Dave you mentioned your eyes are not that good, so you dont use knots unless you have to . Makes alot of sense ,that also makes alot of sense in colder weather when your hands are cold and you lose dexterity. This makes it much easier since your not trying to untie knots with cold fingers, good video.
i'm jealous. you and cody, your different approaches in surviving. and the mutual team work even when you had differences in opinions. excepting the face that your or he had weaknesses in certain environments. you both showed greatness in personality, leaving arrogance put away..
G’day, Dave. Thanks for all the ideas. I pass along an idea in return. When securing loads to the A frame that is equipped with prussics and toggles, the time-proven diamond O hitch is very good to use. The diamond O also works well on a ladder style frame. Courtesy of Half Vast Flying
This was the first video I've seen with a solution for those of us who wear glasses for close work by giving us a handy workaround for common situations. Kudos!
Thanks Dave, I carry deer antler tines for ready at hand toggles ( your idea) and I too need my up close glasses, getting old ain't for sissies. I traded the neck carry knife for a neck carry leather eyeglass sleeve. the two things I need most a belt knife and my glasses.
I recall reading ware soldiers would have a three foot length of rope with a loop on one end and a toggle on the other. Every one would have one so if they needed a rope for something they could link them and not need to carry a long pice of rope. Good video and a lot of useful info. Thanks.
Dave your my go to guy with everything bushcraft. You clearly know your stuff and don't deal in nonsense my question is my brother in I live in northern California how would we apply for your class
Dave you are a constant reminder that, brains are just as important as muscle, you need to have an equilibrium between both. No muscle, you're weak, no brains, you're dumb. A balance, like everything in life is needed. You truly are the last of the modern renaissance man. kudos to you! A stick and a string!!! I can't belive how your mind works!!!
I was taught that British commandos all wore toggle belts 3 to 4 feet long, these had many uses and when they needed longer ropes for crossing obstacles or climbing they joined them together. Keep the videos coming.
such a simple concept, I feel really stupid for never realizing the toggle :) Thanks for the tip..ALSO I am asking if you,or any viewers can recommend a Chanel that deals in survival type settings based in a rain forest environment,no mammals present.
T-Totally off the toggle topic here; but was just wondering in light of the recent happenings in W. Virginia.. How many people caught the recent rain water or used a dehumidifier to collect water from air, and then filtered or chem treated to make it potable. Sorry for the interuption of topic, but I didn't know where else to include :/
Dave was your rope belt and tree toggle 1/2" manila rope? After watching your blanket video, i got an 80/20 wool blanket from Harbor Freight to try it out. Even used your double up rope loop for the belt. The door to my office is always open for the dog and it gets cold, for me that is :-) I wrap up like you showed and I am toasty warm. (no heater in the room) Thought your toggle belt would be good for that also. Thanks for all the videos Dave.
As a fellow can't-see-crap-without-my-glasses sufferer, I've added the 6th C to the 6 Cs of survivability (of course moving the old 6-10 to their respective position of 7-11). #6 is Cataract...bring glasses, which luckily for me are also strong enough to use for combustion...gotta love multi-use tools, eh? Might need a new 11Cs video for us geezers!
Hey Dave I've got a question for u. I found an old duke coil spring foothold trap on my family land and it is pretty rusted but springs still seem to be functioning OK. Is there a certain way I should go about restoring this trap to use it or can I clean the rust off and etc just like cleaning any other piece of metal??
Good video with good info. I gotta say that belt of yours could be the cheapest belt I have ever seen in my life. Considering sticks are everywhere in the woods and you can make cordage out of other things you find in the woods the belt could pretty much be free if you don't wanna buy man made rope.
I have a suggestion. I have been shopping around trying to find good survival based books but can't decide on which to get.you should do a vid on books you recommend or have read that would be good for us to possibly purchase or read
hey dave two things, one how far would you keep a fire from one of the oilskin tarps, also just ordered a few things from you, on of the knives was out of stock but was in stock on the website, the guy i talked to couldnt have been nicer and more apologetic about such a small thing, good people you have working for you brother!
hey dave iv been looking at the shelter systems on your store and I cant decide which one to get which on do u think is best for a beginner and what's the difference between the two tarps
My buddy and i had been small game hunting a few weeks ago and he had taken a spill. When i went over to see if he was ok he had said I'm fine but my gun barrel is all jammed up with dirt. Thanks to watching Dave's videos and watching how he multi tasks many items i pulled out my knife shaved off a stick and poked it down his barrel then tied a small stick to the end of a peace of bank line i had in my pack and ripped off a peace off my handkerchief pulled it out the barrel and he was amazed at how i did that. lol only thing i didn't tell him what how i learned how to do that he thought i just came up with it thinking on my feet.
hey man, any idea when the Chris Caine knife will be back in stock. I need to decide whether to wait to buy it from your site or buy it directly from Chris Caine's
Wow that other tree behind the one you were tied to gave the optical.illusion that the tree was much wider. I was confused how it was tied. Good explanation as always
Dave, I've recently discovered you and love your videos. I'm trying to find me a nice cheapo carbon steel camp knife (kind of like your butcher knives). Any advice?
Humans have been killing animals for centuries... way before we had all these fancy razor tips. What do you think? OBVIOUSLY a sharper tip is going to yield a quicker and cleaner kill but it does not HAVE to be razor sharp to kill. As long as your bow is powerful enough to push that arrow fast enough to make it overcome the resistance of the flesh/bone, to a lethal depth, then that is all that matters. Everything else is just extra - up and to the point of it being moot.
Doesn't have to be but you owe it to the animal to have the broadhead as sharp as possible to get a clean ethical kill. Sharpening mine tonight for a hunt tomorrow. Good luck.
this is probably the dumbest question but hey, it's how we learn. dave always mentions a person named Morse Cohanskey (i probably butchered the name). who is he?
Sorry about the ending, vid was over but lost the outro Thanks for your support guys
were you bit by something on your right hand?
Ashley Montague Nope that was up on his shoulder. I believe it was the left shoulder but I would have to rewatch the episode to be sure.
keep up the good work
Ashley Montague
nope that was his right lower arm just below his elbow. but you right he took it like a champ.
he had two puncture marks next to his tattoo on his right hand. That's what I was talking about
I wish i could afford any of his classes because these videos are amazing. I have learned an insane amount of information and often feel like i need a notebook for videos especially when it comes to series videos (21st century long Hunter, Bushcraft on a budget etc). Loc the videos, Dave!
The canteen trick was well worth the price of admission. Great stuff Dave.
Dave, you're a hair tie and granola bar away from looking like a bush hippie. ha
Tie it off center! What a simple idea. I cant tell you how many times Ive struggled to get the toggle back out... feelin dumb haha. Dig the shirt bud. Thanks for the video.
Me too! Thanks Dave for making my life easier once again!
The canteen trick is so awesome and yet so simple. Things like that make me feel so stupid. Many thanks for all you do to educate those of us who are less informed.

Thanks Dave, its things like this that make life easier out in the bush, like you say the difference between ruffing it an smoothing it...
your maneuver of getting your water/cook bottle out of the fire has added to the reasons I've been seriously considering switching over to this style of water bottle. as an added, I use my small toggle mainly off the inside of my tarp/tent to hang my personals, an candle lantern. looks like 2014 is going to be a hell'ava good an busy year for you an yours. i'm glad

Fantastic and informative video as aways Dave, a sincere thanks from the UK ~Peace~

Who knew a simple idea could have so many uses. Great stuff Dave.
I really like toggles they are very useful especially for traps. Thanks for all you do .
G’day, Dave. Thanks for all the ideas. I pass along an idea in return.

See what happens when you're caught by your own trap? Hehehe! Brilliant ending!
This was the first video I've seen with a solution for those of us who wear glasses for close work by giving us a handy workaround for common situations. Kudos!

going old school with the canteen toggle...haven't seen Dave do that in a bit :)
Thanks Dave!
Great vid, always enjoy watching your channel. I think its the best channel on you tube.
I have used toggles on my tug lines for my dog team, no frozen snaps to deal with. Good tips for the other uses.
I recall reading ware soldiers would have a three foot length of rope with a loop on one end and a toggle on the other. Every one would have one so if they needed a rope for something they could link them and not need to carry a long pice of rope. Good video and a lot of useful info. Thanks.
Great video. Although I need to master "fire" this year, knots and toggles are probably the most useful thing I could master in 2014.
Dave your my go to guy with everything bushcraft. You clearly know your stuff and don't deal in nonsense my question is my brother in I live in northern California how would we apply for your class

Really good vid. Stuff you can immediately use and practice. Thanks!
such a simple concept, I feel really stupid for never realizing the toggle :) Thanks for the tip..ALSO I am asking if you,or any viewers can recommend a Chanel that deals in survival type settings based in a rain forest environment,no mammals present.
All new to me (except tarp) Thanks for all the Great Info! I need to keep notes!
T-Totally off the toggle topic here; but was just wondering in light of the recent happenings in W. Virginia.. Dave, learned a lot about toggles, very informative, ty. video seemed to end early at 11:23
I found a great toggle, it is also a fire steel. Love the video dave
some good tips there ... Cheers
... think i'll try using toggles with my tarp set ups,
Very Good Lesson, I learned something.Thanks.

I like the Roycroft pack frame toggle idea. thanks.
hey great video i was wondering since you been doing axe videos lately would you show how to make a new handle in the field.
yes, would like to see that...
check out ray mears, he does a good vid on that
Lots of uses great video I can't see up close either will give toggles a try
Dave the vid went black at around 11:30 as you demonstrated the trap engine.
Dave, great stuff. Simple but incredibly useful. Thanks for the video!
Great video and info.
Rob M.

Is there a certain way I should go about restoring this trap to use it or can I clean the rust off and etc just like cleaning any other piece of metal??
OMG Dave! From Dual Survival, didn't know you had a youtube channel. That's awesome.
Great information as always.
Good video with good info. I gotta say that belt of yours could be the cheapest belt I have ever seen in my life. Considering sticks are everywhere in the woods and you can make cordage out of other things you find in the woods the belt could pretty much be free if you don't wanna buy man made rope.
What type of wood makes the best toggles?
I'd go with cedar if I were to use it long term.
apextroll . cedar gets brittle over long term use if not greased or finished
I have a suggestion. I have been shopping around trying to find good survival based books but can't decide on which to get.you should do a vid on books you recommend or have read that would be good for us to possibly purchase or read

Great point about bad eyesight. Another great Vid.
hey dave iv been looking at the shelter systems on your store and I cant decide which one to get which on do u think is best for a beginner and what's the difference between the two tarps
I've seen where toggles can be used in fishing as 'fishing hooks', it gets jammed in the throat of the fish, same idea as the canteen.
Thank you, very useful
Great vid Dave. If I was planning on coming to the Basic class, would the Tan Pathfinder Self-Reliance Pack be big enough to hold the required gear?
My buddy and i had been small game hunting a few weeks ago and he had taken a spill. When i went over to see if he was ok he had said I'm fine but my gun barrel is all jammed up with dirt. A wonderful man!.

Wow that other tree behind the one you were tied to gave the optical.illusion that the tree was much wider. I was confused how it was tied. Good explanation as always
Did you use bank line to secure your rope belt loops?
Nice vid. Chocked full of good info!!
Sometimes the most simple things bring the best results, great video (once again). But doesn't the rope belt you use cut in your hip, if heavy loaded?
I like that Shirt Dave, what's it called? Looks revolutionary.
Dave, I've recently discovered you and love your videos. I'm trying to find me a nice cheapo carbon steel camp knife (kind of like your butcher knives). Any advice?
Dave...Dude...YOU ROCK! Thanks so much! It may be because I'm an old geezer, but I LOVE low tech solutions. The KISS philosophy works for me. :)
Very useful video, thanks! Btw, what's the shirt called? I would love one of those.
YOUR THE MAN..... GOOD JOB ON THE VIDEOS,
great video and don't worry i heard the older you get the earlier you finish! lol
Excellent! Thanks.
Can you do a video about the rope belt and why you carry/use one? Possible other uses for it, etc?
Check his channel, he made one not long ago.
Wes, I've seen just about every video Dave has done, I don't recall a video about the rope belt... I'll look through them again I guess....
Wes Smith he did but deleted it for some reason.
Great Vid as always....Toggles rule.
But in your pack frame video, you said you didn't like toggles and you preferred loops. did you change your mind on them?
how much does a tarp cost?
toggles and loops....the woodsman's friends...
How could you get scrap metal if you live in the city for blacksmithing ?
local scrap yard / junk yard
It would help me a lot if you would do a overnighter series. I like your videos PEACE BROTHER!!
awesome thanks!
you're a great teacher
I'm digging the long hair man.
Loved the video!
hey dave would you be willing to shed a little light on reasoning and meaning behind some of your tattoos?
good stuff man
Toggles are easily oggled without goggles. First thing I learned in toggle class. Which was this video lol. I'm all about toggles now.
I love your methodology Dave. Your the only expert I've never seen do something overly complicated just to show off.
Toggles are your friend !
Dave does a broadhead have to be razor sharp for hunting? Great video btw
Humans have been killing animals for centuries... way before we had all these fancy razor tips. What do you think? good discussion topic
What happend to the end of the video
Right on:)
C'mon. The toggles are good ideas. The big fat rope is a bit too "woodsy." Schtick.
awesome
give this guy an eye patch and he could literally be the lead in True Grit...
I was on dual survival
day one outdoors-101 easy stuff......this is my kind of gear because its free :)
U was on dual survivor
Toggle, toggle. turkey gobble....I like toggles!
this is probably the dumbest question but hey, it's how we learn. dave always mentions a person named Morse Cohanskey (i probably butchered the name). who is he?
The name is spelled Mors Kochanski, a Canadian survival expert.
Thanks guys
Dave it's time to hire a cameraman!
