  • Incredible horsemanship, superb balance and supreme strength. Take a bow James Bowen, winner of this Chepstow horse race, despite riding with no rein for the entire contest.
Fair play also to his very promising equine partner Mot A Mot, who looks to have a big engine and a very bright future for trainer Nicky Henderson!

still had one rein...you can do a lot with one rein..and a right hand crop....cept corners oh and keep them on the leg you want .and obstacles ....just hold on to the mane :P Amazing riding. also he had his crop ....which you can use to steer ..especially to keep a horse straighter...the whole basics of dressage involves teaching horses to straighten with the aid of one or sometimes TWO whips ...or to cross over their legs etc with the whip.......you CAN in theory get a horse to change leg with a crop and no reins i suppose ....i would never like to try it though..i dunno how racehorses are trained but most horses are trained to yield to a crop or whip ...they are not just for impulsion...you can see him keeping the crop by the horses shoulder to get him to yield that side its the side that he doesn't have the rein on ...so he keeps him straight that way...ordinarily i presume jockeys would be putting the crop on behind their legs for impulsion ...but he couldn't as he needed it to steer. I presume jockeys are not allowed to strike the crop on the shoulder because its frowned upon even in normal riding circles (it does happen though)so its like a constant shoulder fore only moving lol!..im prolly not explaining this well.

That is painful! I used to ride a retired Steeplechaser who has such incredibly high withers - the yard used to do bareback classes to strengthen our riding ability - and trotting and jumping on Owen was painful even for a girl! TB horses tend to have very high withers anyway, but Owen's were extreme.

The horses are started before they are even two years old raced at 40mph and if they stop winning a large majority will end up in the slaughter pipeline by the time they are five. If a failed racehorse ‘retires’ at five will the benevolent owner keep them for another 20years or so in a happy retirement home.

@@stevehardy3680 Yep I have two RoR horses myself. Both not fast enough to line the owners pocket so they were sold on at rising 3yrs old. They are gorgeous and will live with me forever - I turned them away for six months so their skeleton and muscles could develop properly before bringing them back into work slowly as you would any youngster. But there are thousands an thousands of others who are not sound enough or have the mental attitude to be a pleasure horse and they are the ones who get sold on and on and can end up in the slaughter house (Check out the Panorama program). The life these racehorses lead is stabled for most of the day - except when training or racing - so they don’t get injured. Started under saddle before they are even fully developed and if the ‘break down’ (hmmm nice terminology for a broken leg or tendon) they are destroyed on the track. Did you see the photo of Gordon Elliot sitting astride the dead horse who had a heart attack during training. No care or respect for these magnificent creatures. And as for no racing no horses - its not about that its about the intensity and disrespect that they have during their lives. I say too many horses too many greedy owners. And as for your patronising comment to @Sarah about hugging a tree you need to grow up if you want your comments to be respected.

Racehorses know that the rein against his neck means to go left or right. It's the same as dressage with the legs, or a Western horse with the reins against the neck..

An intelligent horse doesn't require reins. When Secretariat ran, he ran the race he chose to run . The jockey just hung on.
