Catching a fish like an aku requires patience, knowledge of the fish's behavior, and the right equipment. Here's a guide to help you increase your chances of catching akus:
Firstly, understanding the behavior of akus is crucial. Akus are known to swim in schools, typically near the surface during the day and deeper at night. They are attracted to areas with abundant baitfish, such as flying fish or squid. Knowing their habits can help you narrow down the best locations and times to fish for them.
Secondly, choosing the right equipment is essential. A medium to heavy-duty spinning or trolling rod and reel combo is recommended for catching akus. Braided fishing line with a fluorocarbon leader is often preferred as it offers better sensitivity and abrasion resistance. Additionally, using lures such as feather jigs, small surface plugs, or live bait like small mackerel or sardines can be effective in attracting akus.
Thirdly, mastering your technique is key to successfully hooking akus. When trolling, maintain a steady speed of around 6-8 knots and vary your trolling depth to find where the fish are biting. If casting, aim for areas with visible surface activity or where birds are diving, indicating the presence of baitfish and potentially akus feeding below. Once you've hooked a fish, maintain a steady retrieve to keep the tension on the line and prevent it from escaping.
Fourthly, practicing patience and observation is crucial when targeting akus. It may take time to locate a school of fish, so be prepared to spend some time on the water. Keep an eye out for signs such as birds diving or surface disturbances, which can indicate the presence of feeding akus. Additionally, pay attention to changes in water temperature, currents, and wind patterns, as these can also affect fish behavior and movement.
Lastly, practicing responsible fishing practices is important for the sustainability of aku populations. Always adhere to local fishing regulations regarding catch limits, size restrictions, and seasonal closures. Release undersized or unwanted fish carefully to ensure their survival, and properly dispose of any trash or debris to protect the marine environment for future generations of anglers.
