Used to love going to this track in the 50's as a kid. Sat in A.J. Foyt's race car several times. He lived near us in Spring Branch.

My dad was Tommy Mangum and I remember those days like they were yesterday! It was fun seeing the video and remembering every person you named in your list. Thanks for posting

As a very small child, I remember going there . Remember my neighbor, Gus Lentz had a car, and his car mechanic as a local in my neighborhood, Gerald Gresek.

My daddy, Clive Sam (San Antone) Melson, was out at Playland Park Raceway all of time - he was a part owner in one of the racecars.

A great video, and in the days of 20 second laps (45mph averagespeed), a great racing facility. Unfortunely, as 9/5/59 proved, when the ModifiedStockCars started circling the 1/4 mile in 15 seconds (60mph averagespeed), the speeds had outgrown the facility.

Used to ride my bike all the way to Playland Park every Thursday? and Saturday night to watch A.J. Foyt, Buddy Rackley, Jimmy Johnson, Doc Cossey from Dallas, Jimmy Willis, Phil Cronin drove a Green 32 Dodge? Billy Griswold, Billy Wade, Tommy Thompson. Got run off from A.J. and Tony Foyt's shop on several occasions. Once while they were running up brand new 57 Chevy Engines. They had them up in the air about four feet off the ground with the radiator being a 55 gallon Drum full of water. Where they brazed it to the barrel kept coming unbrazed. It was churning that water in the barrel, and had some make do headers, or straight two foot pipes coming out the side. I had never seen that before. I was there the night Johnny Hidalgo's gas pedal stuck, and he went up into the stands opposite the starting line. Sorry, I used to be able to remember more of the names, but Buddy Rackley, and A.J. won most of the time, or were in second or third depending on what some very inexperienced drivers would do to mess that up. Almost forgot, tempers would flare up in the pits, and there were some bad fights. From time to time different drivers would come into the pits really fast, and deliberately run into another drivers car. You knew what was coming, and nobody held back, and some of them really got hurt. After they closed it down, I went to Meyer Speedway on South Main, the cars were faster, and they were running the sprint cars? but it just wasn't the same as that old 1/8th mile track. We moved, and I got drafted in 1964, and I think it was the second time A.J. won at Indy.

A.J. Foyt got his start in racing here. I watched him race there many a Saturday night in the late 50s. He was not my favorite driver. I was a Tommy Thompson and Billy Wade fan.
