  • Hi everyone! In this video I get into history of how floral fragrances used to very much be marketed to and worn by men. I also recommend three incredible unisex floral fragrances. Enjoy!
    Fragrances Mentioned:
    Pichola by Neela Vermeire Creations

Bois de Violette by Serge Lutens

I’m wearing No.5 as I watch this, in fact I started my second bottle Christmas just gone. I also wear AG Cloud, been through a few bottles of that. I guess there’s plenty of men out there that are happy to wear what they like regardless of the marketing. TF Black Orchid imo was a tipping point of fragrances becoming ‘shared’ rather than gender specific. Always interesting to view such informative uploads as this . Many thanks.

Hi Ashley, thank you for this informative video. I'm not so much into florale fragrances, i do love gourmandes fragrances more. There are a few Florals that I love such as Héliotrope, Chèvrefeuille (acacia), Freesia and Ylang-ylang. Most flowers are just too much for my nose ;-) It was very interesting what you said about florals in marketing in the 19th century. I am an art historian who studied 18th-century landscape painting. It was only in the late 18th century that women were depicted in portraits with a landscape background (see Gainsborough) and all this importance of nature is coming from landscape gardening and painting in front of nature. So the fact that flowers and natural forms are used in marketing must come from these 18th-century ideas about nature as source of emotional, moral and mental wellbeing. Thank you for your unique examples for florale scents. It's always worthy trying one of your proposals ;-)

For sure I like florals, some of my favorite fragrances do have them prominently: Dior Fahrenheit EDT, Dior Homme Intense, Mugler Cologne, Fougere Royale itself also has some important floral components. Now very interested in that Serge Lutens: Bois de Violette, since I also love cedar.

So glad you started your own channel! Very interesting and fun fragrance history lesson!
I definitely subscribed to gendering fragrance when I got back into fragrances 5 or so years ago and steered clear of florals even though I LOVE them. Since then, I've watched enough male and female reviewers reviewing floral (or floral leaning) fragrances to feel comfortable venturing out into them and into "lady" frags. I found, surprisingly, that I really love rose and now have a few rose fragrances. I also found that most of the female marketed fragrances I've tried so far didn't strike me as particularly female at all (as I imagine a female fragrance might smell).
Now that I'm 5-ish years into my reintroduction to fragrances I'm not concerned with wearing something floral. There still are times where I'll try something (not specifically floral) that strikes my nose as being "too pretty" and those I don't wear. I THINK the "pretty" culprit is peach but I don't have the nose to be sure. Whatever it is, I leave the "pretty" frags to the ladies.

☆Bonjour Ashley, loved the topic! I must state that florals are some of my most favorites. Like most, nerolis were my introduction to florals. Dad always wore 4711 in the 70s. Now I really appreciate violet, magnolia, jasmine, carnation, and roses that smell green and woody. I am still searching for, exploring, and scouring to learn more about the world of florals in parfums. I will try out the suggestions made, and look forward to (hopefully) seeing more from your channel! A favorite floral I rock is Portrait of a Lady-F.M., Into the Sea & Sundrunk by Imaginary Authors. ☆Luv the great info, much respect and appreciation ☆☆☆☆☆

Lutens BOIS De Violet , the praise you give here is absolutely warranted. It for me at least renders the Feminite Du BOIS totally unnecessary. It’s in a different strata for me entirely. Also, going on a what has been established as masculine and feminine , I really do put Dior Homme way to the feminine side of BOIS dw Violiot. Any guy who is comfortable wearing that will be wearing the Lutens. I think the guy unsure of florals will enjoy the Lutens experience much more, especially in fall winter but I’ve loved it in rainy night April as well, the person you may be wearing it with will like it more and you are sure not to be sensing it all around like Dior. Such a great choice!

Ive been getting into fragrances for the last year and a half and I recently discovered florals. As a man its harder to find good floral fragrances as most are marketed to women, but I love them. I dig the MFK oud series and also Unique E luxury Woud and Mood (which is said to be a TF oudwood and MFK oud satin mood combo). I really like toy boy, say what you will but I really enjoy it. Also enjoy Amouage reflection man. Lastly just tried Zaharoff Signature rose, what an amazing rose scent. To me it leans fem but dont mind if I smell like an old lady to wear that. Great video!

Interesting history of fragrances, I like this compared to basic TOP 5. Now, I like wearing some florals. For example, some Rose+oud frags can be really "manly". Been testing Widian - Liwa, I like it. Maybe it's not the typical floral frag, but it has some floral elements. Ormonde Jayne - Ormonde Elixir, just wow. Received a bottle. Not a floral frag, but I do get jasmine and it smells so good. And ofcourse all time classic, Fahrenheit with the Violet, that is considered man's man frag LOL. So I guess what I am trying to say is that you don't need to limit yourself to one category of "bleau for men" -type frags.

I'm a big floral fan & have many, love a good tuberose too so Tubereuse du Mexique sounds tempting.
Loved the history and how one persons art changed perceptions of flowers for men. It's quite funny when you get super frag bros saying they wont wear florals but love the older version of Dior Homme, which is an iris floral through and through. :)
Some florals I wear often are Osten's Jasmine Impression, Portrait of a Lady, Rose Flash, Narcotic Flowers from 1000 Flowers, Nahema, Chamade, 1000, Patou's Joy, Nudiflorum, Trimerous form Jorum Bukhara from Gallivant love iris. Plunge from Strangers is a new fave and ladies love it on me, random people have asked me what it is too :)

  • @adivarvari

Strange how recently I'm more attracted to floral fragrances. :))
As someones said before, a fragrance should not be marketed as for men or women because in nature you really can't say that it smells particular masculine or feminine.
While there are some notes that tends to be more in a genre or the other, I really believe that one should try and appreciate every smell what's around.
As for the floral fragrances for men, I can't stop smelling Amouage's Myths Man, my favourite one and Narciso for him EDP.
Great work and research from you, looking forward to hear more about the history of perfumes.

Hi Ashley, love this subject as I'm really getting into florals. I've tried a few from Perris Monte Carlo and particularly like their Rose d'Taif. Also tried Ylang-ylang by Lorenzo Villoresi which is really nice. Have noticed I seem to like frags with peony in as well but I'd like to explore much more. One of my fav male orientated frags is Dia Man. Those first two you mentioned sound amazing, thanks. 👍

I wear a Silver Mountain Water clone (Al Wisam Day), Atomic Rose, 2 Neroli Portofino clones (Neroli Canvas by Al Haramain - a little expensive for a Middle Eastern fragrance, but better than the original; and Bright Neroli), a lot of Iris designers (Prada Amber, DHI, Gentleman EDP) and some women's floral fragrances (Good Girl, Bvlgari Aqva Divina)..
I think most of men watching your videos wear florals because people who are really into fragrances don't limit themselves to the ones that have "for men" or "pour homme" on the bottle..
Anyway, love your content - very unique and interesting.. Keep it up!

This video did not make me an expert, but I certainly learned a thing or 3. I grew up attending fragrance free schools, and always associated them with phys-ed students who just worked out, layered themselves in axe, and on more than one occasion sent a teacher home because of his allergies. It was only when I got my first aftershave that I realized how fun this could be. I wouldn't say I wear fragrance to make someone like me, although if my partner is turned on by something then I am more than happy to oblige. But it's a pleasure thing. With that said, I am still self-conscious about how I come across to other people, especially if I happen to like a scent that leans feminine with strong floral notes. I think it'll just become more natural over time, much like when I first learned to play the banjo and was embarrassed to tell anybody.

I have pretty strong English vocabulary but had never heard the word "indolic" before. I guessed it might be related to the word "indolence" meaning the fragrance bring about that feeling.....and was very wrong.

    • @ashleyinparisvideos
      @ashleyinparisvideos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi John! I use the word indolic to describe a fragrance or flower emanating a lot of an fragrance molecule called indole. This molecule is found in many flowers particularly white flowers. When mixed with the flowers other aromatic compounds this molecule lends depth and creaminess. The problem though is that this molecule smells fecal on its own and that smell can easily overpower a fragrance when dosed too highly. Hope that helps and thank you for watching!

What types of florals would you recommend for men specifically though? What kinds of flowers feel more masculine to you? Some of them like gardenia remind me of my grandmother. I’m totally open to wearing florals, but I’m averse to certain things I.e. gardenia

I know this vid is old but do you think Jasmin Des Anges from Dior can be unisex? it is one of my favourite fragrances ever but I'm not sure I'm I'm really the wearer or not

I personally love floral fragrances, I am never the type to be categorized. The idea that men don’t like flowers, or walking through a botanical garden, an looking at the beauty, and smelling the flowers, is false. We are all people, fascinated by all the same things, including flowers. One of my favorite florals is by Frederic Malle- Lys Mediterranee, another would be. MFK’s L’Homme Á la Rose.

Located Bois de Violette in USA, but couldn't locate a supplier of Pichola or Tubereuse du Mexique. Have any suggestions for a supplier in USA???
