We used to do this to the A-10's all the time. The gun gas would get into the engines and coat the compressor blades, which would reduce the available engine power. When it fell to 95% the engines would get washed out.
@@_monti142 i’m sure he means the carbon and other chemicals released from the propellant of the Gatling gun when fired. Smoke goes back into engines and coats the compressor in carbon, thus reducing efficiency anddd engine power.
keep in mind also that tiny dust particles of silica can melt and fuse to the blades, causing inefficiency. A jet flying thru volcanic dust in Indonesia had an engine internally coated with melted silica, that stole a lot of the power of the engine. Fortunately the engine wasn't damaged enough to fail in flight. This is why when that volcano erupted in Iceland all the airliners stayed away from that air laden with volcanic dust. It melts and the spinning coats it with a glass like substance, similar to the way a cotton candy machine works.
I’ve been doing these engine washes for years with different engine wash equipment. We wash 2 engines per shift, GE, Rolls Royce, CFM56,737max LEAP ENGINE, V-2500 a-320, Pratt Whitney. 787 genex engine. We do it with a team of 2 people.
People who've never worked on aircraft don't realize how dirty they get, to be efficient an engine has to be clean. They're just motoring over the engine not starting it. They pull the fuel circuit breaker so the engine won't start.
Washing my GE90 I alway use baking soda, I learned that from my grandma! I use the GE90 for to pull my eight-furrow plough. Works fine, an acre is done in 1.2 seconds!
I remember that particular aircraft because British Airways were doing cabin modifications for their new dusk services between the UK and America and were installing bed tubs which allowed for seats to electrically turn into a fully flat bed with entertainment systems. G-VIIR was the 100th aircraft in the fleet to have the mod done and everyone who worked on it, got an engraved chrome key ring with a personalised tin box. I worked as a cabin fitter helping to remove the old interior, carry out structural inspections and the help fit the new interior and seat coverings. Was a great aircraft to work on.
Normal day in the life of a helicopter pilot too. Bleed valves blocked, igniters off, introduce soap, spool to 10/12% N1, rinse is same procedure with distilled water. Remove bleed blocks, igniters on, normal start, spool to 100%, remain for 5 minutes, exercise the anti-ice valve/valves, anti-ice off, normal cool down. In 1989 I worked at JFK (NYC) and had to was the belly of the DC 9 with a very long mop like kinda washing your car with a brush at the end of pole. It was tiring but I had a lot of fun cleaning the aircraft.
Gaspath wash using the Juniper rig requires disconnection of EEC sense lines and post wash engine ground run. It consumes fuel and takes too long to perform task. It is easier to use Lufthansa designed spinner wash rig. It does not require to disconnection of EEC sense lines and post wash engine run-up.
Cleaning the burners and the turbine section is an essential part of engine maintenance. During normal operation soot builds up on the sections of the engine. The increased thickness of soot restricts heat transfer causing internal temperature to run higher than designed. This could contribute to uneven turbine temperatures in multi engine aircraft seen on the flight deck computers. All thermodynamic machines need to be clean to work as designed.
I believe the mat is to capture what ever comes out of the engine. If pieces came out that would be a problem and it would be nice to know that. There is no EPA in the UK so I doubt that is the issue, they are looking for pieces. The other thing that they may do is send the wash out to a lab to see what is in it. if there was any contaminants, sand, oil, what ever.
I reluctantly glanced down to the comments area to see if there were any details on interval cleaning, solvent etc on the largest most expensive, impressive turbo fan engine in the world only to find comments of no meaning. What's happened to our society.
Chris S We used those juniper rigs at my previous airline. They were expensive but worth the money. No detergent is used with this method, just hot (70 deg C) demineralised water. The airline compared the results with the old way of using detergent wash / water rinse method. The results were the same (in egt margin) but the advantages were no detergent costs, and a short idle drying run instead of a medium power run to remove detergent fumes. This was important as we could do idle runs during the noise curfew so plane was ready for morning first flight, not to mention less fuel consumed not having to burn off detergent residue. I heard the turbine spin up during wash and saw it spinning, was arguing with myself - was this the engine under it's own power or the sound of an APU pressure washer lol. Therefore a far more dynamic process than one would expect. Being my favorite engine it certainly would be a pleasure to be an A&P on one of these. I am curious what the suggested manufacturers cleaning interval is.

Look at a Alison 250 turboshaft.The compressor is the size of coffee thermos and takes 2 thirds of the thrust generated to run it. That works out to about 800 shaft hp. Tiny little engine. Without the gearcase, easily lifted by hand onto a bench.Now imagine one of the big ones...

How much does it cost to do a wash? Is it to increase performance (save money) or is it a safety matter to do a wash? Is it mandated by the engine mfr?
Its optional by the aircraft operator, it cleans all the crud of the blades and improves fuel efficiency. Engine manufacturers have their own teams / have sub companies that carry out the washes. They recommend them to be carried out at 6 month intervals
Francis Parkes It's not running in the normal sense. It is motoring on the air starter which is powered by the APU in the tail. The reason for this is the core gets to around 10% which allows the solution to be pushed through. It's important to do this to allow cleaning of the compressor, combustor and turbine section. This removes carbon build up, and also the motoring on the starter also allows some bleed air to be generated from the compressor to put positive pressure into the engines own cooling system, allowing to clean the cooling veins in the turbine blades and nozzles (nozzles are fixed to direct air to the spinning turbine disc, to allow for the most efficient gas path hitting the spinning blades. They are like stators but are not variable). Turbine blades and nozzles have pin prick sized holes on the aerofoil leading edges which allows colder air to circulate over their surface to mitigate the 1500 degree heat generated by the burning air/fuel mixture. Without this cooling air, the blades and nozzles would melt. Any chemical solution cleaning or otherwise when dried could leave a film and if the engine was stationary, could potentially block these crucial cooling holes. Running the engine on the starter eliminates this risk by applying air pressure to keep anything settling on top of the cooling holes, drying and causing a blockage.
Francis Parkes Like others mentioned, its just being motored over by the air turbine starter via bleed air. There isn't any internal electrical components to speak of aside from the thermocouples in the core that is being washed. And the external stuff you see dripping wet is all very well sealed. After the engine is run with the wash solution it is run again with a rinse solution. Looks like a nice system! Our setup for PT6A is pretty basic and messy but gets the job done.

Curtis Anderson: You're correct sir, they use the starter to motor the engine so that they can clean the blades inside the engine. The air is suppled to the starter by the use of an External Bleed Air Cart or by firing up the APU. No fuel is injected to the engine while doing the wash obviously.

The GE90 doesn't use bleed air valves. It uses a variable stator vane rack instead. Unless you mean from the other engine... which is possible, I suppose - though they're mounted pretty far apart to be interconnected.
I looked at it again, and as slow as the shaft is turning I think they're just running the air turbine start motor for five minutes or so. That would be well within the duty cycle of the start motor, so it would be easy to do...
+KOakaKO Aside from the 787 engines, don't all turbojet engines have bleed valves? All of the a/c engines I have experience with have bleed valves... typically a low pressure bleed and a high pressure bleed.
thefactorypilot145 - I don't have firsthand knowledge, and can't claim to be an expert. But I've read enough about it, and seen a few hundred hours of videos about re-building turbine engines, to know that the bleed-air valves are an older technology. From what I've seen and read, pretty much all turbines built in the past 30 years or so use the variable stator vanes to accomplish the same pressure variations that the bleed-air valves used to do, and they apparently do it more efficiently as well.
As we know air is full of contaminants and jet engines are no exception. The water (rain) itself during flight can't pass through the compressors bec of centrifugal force that drives it. And that's the reason why the water pipe is being positioned on the compressor inlet area for that purpose..
Part of it has to do with the RPM and airflow. When the cleaning solution or water to rinse it is introduced to the engine. It must cost the entire surface of the gas path. Too much RPM and it will sling off. Typical for a wash and rinse is to let the cleaner stay on the parts for a bit to loosen the contaminants then rinse it away.

Software can now motor the engine without requesting fuel. Water wash is great for EGT margin and LPC stall margin.

It wasn't running. We use bleed air from the APU to turn the compressor. Actually running the engine would defeat the purpose of the wash.

From what I've seen and read, pretty much all turbines built in the past 30 years or so use the variable stator vanes to accomplish the same pressure variations that the bleed-air valves used to do, and they apparently do it more efficiently as well.

As we know air is full of contaminants and jet engines are no exception. The water (rain) itself during flight can't pass through the compressors bec of centrifugal force that drives it. And that's the reason why the water pipe is being positioned on the compressor inlet area for that purpose..
+nickydak1d Rain is form with dust particles and moisture, so that's saying you're going to wash it with dirt.
Part of it has to do with the RPM and airflow. When the cleaning solution or water to rinse it is introduced to the engine. It must cost the entire surface of the gas path. Too much RPM and it will sling off.
Typical for a wash and rinse is to let the cleaner stay on the parts for a bit to loosen the contaminants then rinse it away.

i wonder what percentage of the thrust comes from just the big fan bypassing air
80℅ thrust, ge90 has 134,700 lbs of thrust at full throttle
