I started playing around the same time as you. Teenage Niko played Megrim + Shocker! Also over loaded the deck with AEther Flash + Death Pits of Rath. It was terrible, terribly fun.
Man, Chains + Anvil still triggers PTSD from my youth when I first played a Type 1.5 event, not understanding what it meant with my dumb burn deck and I got locked under this combo.
back in 7th before i heard of 'netdecks or scrye deckslists i played megrim, warped devotion and bounce spells. Was fun for FNM but i was never brave enough to take it to anything else. Temporal adept was fun to play too.
My first deck when I came back to Magic (after leaving after Fallen Empires) was a Megrim deck. That was a quick education. You beat up their life total until their hand is empty and then you lose. Glad to see it being brewed on in a real way.
Omg Megrim. I remember playing the Jar Megrim decks. My friend won a GP back then playing a deck with pro black creatures and Pariah... or a PTQ I forget which

Fun fact: Megrim was the win condition in the deck that landed Memory Jar an emergency ban. The deck basically did nothing but spew fast mana, chain together Memory Jars, which would make your opponent discard their hand multiple times and die on the spot to Megrim. Randy Buehler fired off a turn one win with the deck in the Gauntlet of Greatness video series.
As someone who neve played on the Magic Online client the visual animations like the lands turning help a looot to understand what's going on. It's sad it takes time, as a viewer it's a much better experience :/
I have fond memories of an old black deck that was centered around underworld dreams and megrim. It was not a good deck, but for kitchen table magic, it was still fun. It helped us ensure that the games wouldn't drag on for too long.
My lizard brain has just been "jam Sheoldred in everything" and I can't decide if she's a nonbo, actually makes sense with the forced draw, or just a slow win more card.
Regardless to how good this deck actually is this deck had me hyped. Discard is one of my favorite strategies in all of magic. I'm a big stax player and discard is the fairest variant of stax. I love it when you can make it work in a format that generally don't care all that much on discard.
Hey on the round two last game. On the last round when all they needed was a removal spell with the single card hand In that situation I'd have held voidwalker back in order to use it's ability to use the swords in exile to disrupt the combo. In theory it buys you a turn to rip a burning inquiry. Just a thought!
I usually include Dream Salvage in this style of deck because it often becomes a 1 mana draw 2 or better. I think it would be interesting to take this deck in an Underworld Breach direction since Burning Inquiry feeds the graveyard for it, maybe with Birgi to make the mana to churn all the way through. There are also some blue cards that might be interesting to try if you were to go into grixis colors like Dak Fayden, Prismari Command, and Wistful Thinking. Maybe even Cephalid Coliseum.
@@taranweeks4393 yeah, sometimes you get to live that Ancestral Recall dream after burning inquiry. It's also nice that it can be cast off the remaining black if you go Ritual Hymn or off the black mana you get off of Waste Not. I once was able to pull off 1 mana draw 7 after they had Boseiju'd my Waste Not in response to the second Burning Inquiry using the mana Waste Not made from the Boseiju channel before it was destroyed.
I have a brew with Dream Salvage, Wistful Thinking, Cephalid Coliseum, and Crucible of Worlds. Bounce spells (Compelling Deterrence!?) also help remove troublesome permanents and give you something to discard. I haven't decided whether Liliana's Caress is worthy of being included. I also have a few fun cards like Thing in the Ice and Rankle, Master of Pranks. Sheoldred is also an interesting choice.
I'm more of a Rack guy I think. Wait, that sounds suggestive, doesn't it? I mean I like Affliction. Wait, fuck, now I sound insecure! Anyways, I like making hand size matter more than making opponent's discards matter because people can run out of cards and that's inherently a lot better than the opponent still having cards they can discard. I always suspected that Black Vise is technically the stronger card because you can deal huge damage with it, but it's also really likely to blow up in your face compared to The Rack. I don't even bother with Waste Not generally, I find it too slow and clunky when I can just 12 Rack them to death turn 4 or 5 sometimes, why worry about making Zombies when I can mainboard Innocent Blood? TBH I don't think I even run all my racks, I took various cards out of my Legacy Jank Discard deck to put into my Sygg deck, nothing screams 'have a great time everyone!' like running Discard, various damage payoffs and hard Stax to stall out the game to make sure I can bore everyone to death. Sygg is RPing a union boss in negotiations, so it's not really meant to be 'fun for all' so much as 'fun for the workers', which is the creatures who are all 'on strike' (IE are tapped down forever), while the people stuck in the negotiations are crying tears of blood. I've always loved using stuff like Bottomless Pit or Necrogen Mists, and while these are also playable in Legacy, they're really nasty in Commander. I feel like with Waste Not you probably want some decent instant speed mana outlets, maybe a Retrofitter Foundry, maybe Sagas to find it? Then you could also switch from Megrims to The Rack, which can also be found by Urza's Saga, which can also make you bodies that can easily be big enough to be relevant. Cool deck idea, maybe trying to do too many different things at once?
It’s not idiotic if that’s what the donor specified. But I was wondering the same thing. Did you mention to the donor there’s a cheaper card with the same effect? Could you have doubled down by playing both?

Honestly seems like a good BR midrange brew could have legs in legacy. Just okay good cards and not be so all in on megrim/waste not. Dauthi, Tourach, Kroxa, thoughtseize and some bolts and fatal pushes. Wasteland. There’s a deck in there.
@@BoshNRoll (Obligatory, I know this breaks the brew challenge) Chrome Mox seems really good in this deck even without Sheodred. Even better if the card in question shuffles the graveyard back in their deck right? ...How stupid would it be to make the epic megrim?
I would run Smallpox over Edict. It's the same removal, has discard, and restricting mana means more cards will be stuck in their hand to discard. Edict is better against Murktide but not much else.
Match 1 Game 3 I'm not sure why you didn't dark ritual the kroxa to play around daze on the subsequent pyroblast? You just died with the ritual in your hand and it's likely you win if you take that line.
