It's really quite simple...If you have the money, you need to spend it on day 1 releases. Don't wait for black friday. Don't wait for a clearance sale. Don't buy secondhand. The more a new release sells the first week, that is the best way to tell the studios to release more content. They only listen to profits, not your submitted wish-lists. You gotta pay to play!

If a market is like that it's already doomed. If it's big enough it shouldn't be an issue. If it is an issue, encouraging a handful of people isn't going to make a difference.
Besides that, 4K blu-rays in general are pretty expensive to buy. Don't tell people to go along with paying outrageous prices.

    • @bened22
      @bened22 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Some releases have fair prices. Those I buy day one even if I know I won't watch them for some time. Also if the movie is something I just HAVE to watch as soon as possible. Others have absurd prices and for those I wait till they get reasonable.

I feel it’s not just movie studios that aren’t putting enough effort in physical media anymore, it’s also retailers and Blu Ray player manufacturers who aren’t selling them like they used to! We need to get distributors to rethink physical media, because stores like Target and Best Buy aren’t stocking them anymore! Thrift stores have a bigger DVD and Blu Ray selection than those big box stores! You need retail distribution to fix the physical media business, because I used to work retail decades ago, and it’s all about distribution from DVD manufacturers and suppliers!

@@mike-williams yeah, the movie and TV shelf space at most big box stores are now down to just one corner shelf that has only 20 DVDs and Blu Rays! But my Walmart still has just one aisle of shelf space for movies, TV series boxset. I think because they don’t want to compete with online streaming, because they reduced that shelf space for books, magazines, and manga!

Problem is everyone who was involved from top to bottom are gone.

A few directors still watch films on blu-ray. For example, Christopher Nolan where despite that he prefers to make his films on film, he does like the quality of some blu-rays when he watches some film. Wes Anderson does watch films in The Criterion Channel where he rediscovered a few films and works with The Criterion Collection on the releases of his films. Yes, spreading the word about 4K releases of films to directors and actors does help increase the chance of them being released. Getting them involved in their releases could help as well. Also, you can add additional special features that you can't find in streaming services. Streaming services today is pretty much cable T.V. 2.0..Great episode.

We own "Band of Brothers," "Pacific," "Rome," parts one and two and "John Adams." We don't stream because how many long series can we possibly sit through? Or re-watch? You end up paying for a streaming service where your hourly monthly viewing is generally skewed towards one series, because most people simply do not have the time. We prefer physical media, where a film, even an older Hollywood epic, can be viewed in one sitting. And think of how many films we can watch in a month from multiple genres both foreign and domestic, compared to getting saddled with a streaming series that goes on forever ... with way too much padding ... and, what, watch it again? Give us more physical media, where we can pick and choose from among our own collection's titles and not just the assigned titles listed in a streaming service, or following the crowd to the next hot series that goes on forever. With streaming, you pay to watch. With physical media, you pay to own a physical copy you can watch and appreciate at any time.

Isn't James Cameron himself the reason why his movies haven't hit 4K? I thought the studios already knew how well his movies sold on previous formats, and it's him that's holding back a remaster/re-release because of his lack of time and contractual right to approve home video transfers.

I think Gruv or others should do a physical media subscription service. Not a rental like Netflix used to do, but like a one movie purchased each month for a flat rate of $10-$20 a month or whatever kind of thing. Let you set up a list of movies based on what they have in stock and ship them to you one a month starting at the top of the list and moving down. I would totally do that!

Just listened to the audio version and wanted to jump over to leave a quick comment. I think a films producer is going to be your best bet to get a film on disc over a director or cast/crew. In most cases the producer is the person that brings the money and the people to a film project and they always have financial gain in mind. And in most cases the producer is actually the person who owns the film when it isn’t owned by a studio. You go to a producer and pitch to them that a movie they worked on 20+ years ago would be great on physical media and hopefully they see dollar signs. They also have some emotional investment in a project like a director does so in most cases they’d probably love to see their films find a new audience. And again their job is to bring money and people to a project and the same can apply to getting a film on disc.

Comparing video streaming to music streaming, there is far less exclusivity with music streaming. It's almost non-existent. You can subscribe to just one music streaming platform and get access to pretty much every piece of music you want. This difference is where video streaming is failing by limiting people's ability to consume content to a single platform, forcing multiple subscriptions and not focusing on physical media at all. I think it's good for Disney to licence their content to other platforms and I hope this leads to streaming services expanind their libraries. I suspect we'll see a lot of the studio streaming platforms disappear in the next few years.

The Director's comments on Jingle All the Way are interesting. I think on top of not having ownership, a lot of them really aren't all that technical. They know how to make a movie but they may not care about physical media. Quentin Tarantino for instance doesn't care about 4K and I think even DVD. He still likes VHS and analog media. Stallone during his Rocky remaster said that they were going to be released on "4K DVD". It really comes down to use to push for this stuff and get word out to the Directors and Producers that there is a market for it. The Duffers brothers on the other hard are physical media guys and know people want Stranger Things. That's a control issue.

While I agree there's money to be made that way, I think the big earner now and in the future is VOD sales via Apple, iTunes, Vudu, etc. There is no manufacturing cost and shipping costs, and you never have to worry about recalls. Studios make huge money doing that, and there is a larger population of people that choose to purchase there vs physical media

How are they still making money with movies and tv/shows on physical discs? I still remember back in the 80's, a VHS movie was real expensive. Then they got cheap by the late 80's as they started putting ads on the tapes. Anyways, they don't seem to be putting ads on discs anymore like they used to.
I really do like it when they take an old movie, and then clean it up and do a 4k scan of the negative, and then color correct it, and then put that transfer on a 4k/Blu-Ray disc. Though I think a lot of times they instead just use the interpositive, which means you will still have matte lines, unless they paint them out.

The boutique labels don't have much in the way of back catalogue. All they would have are 5-year licenses for films. I would agree that boutiques such as Scream Factory re-releasing a title they put out on BluRay a year or so later is a bit of a cash grab. But from a business model, they're trying to make as much as they can compared to what it cost them to license the movie in the first place.

    No need to fuss ..
Physical media is here to stay forever. And yes there will be ups and downs.
Look at what Vinyl has been through and now there are not enough Vinyl companies in the US to produce these albums for consumption.
Studios make these decisions not the Directors. Unless it’s Cameron, Tarantino’s of the world so your putting the cart before the horse.
Physical media (movies) are now in the hands of smaller studios and this is the future of physical media. Kino, Criterion..ect.
Don’t fret..streaming devalues Movies and soon all these companies will be in the predicament as Netflix has found themselves in.

One movie that I would absolutely LOVE to have on Blu Ray/4K would be Pink Floyd- The Wall (1982 film). It is DESPERATELY in need of a proper restoration and proper HD release. However, I don't think this strategy would work for this particular movie, unfortunately... The director has passed away, and the cinematographer/DP is apparently 78 and probably doesn't do social media. I suppose the next prominent place to go would be to Bob Geldof, as the lead actor, but he's a pretty big name in himself and it would probably be difficult to get in touch with him as it is. And freaking Roger Waters doesn't want the movie to be seen anyway, so it would probably require a decent "fight" to get a Blu Ray/4K/restoration released, either convincing Waters to allow it or get it released even despite whatever protests he may have. So that's one that, unfortunately, may never happen, sadly :(

Gruv does have to pay some outside entities, such as Ingram Entertainment who stocks & ships movies for Gruv & other companies (including Target for a time). Still, what Gruv doesn't pay Ingram, Vantiva (fka Technicolor) & other background contractors goes directly to its studio backers, especially Universal.
Disney has the same advantage with Disney Movie Club; though it's run by a contractor (Alta Resources), Disney is starting to send some of its physical media releases to DMC as exclusives (even short-term) because it knows DMC members are supporters of Disney movies on physical media. Disney just quietly made the 4K Blu-ray release (other than Best Buy Steelbook) of Strange World a DMC exclusive, though it's uncertain for how long. Cinderella (1950), the first 4K Blu-ray ever of a pre-Renaissance Disney Animation film, will debut March 28 as a DMC exclusive before getting a wider release this fall.

I'm curious about how a company like Vinegar Syndrome forms their business plan. It seems like they put a lot of effort into a few high selling titles like Thriller and Road House, because I've been a subscriber of theirs for over a year and I sell off most of what I received or buy from them. I can tell what sells well and what doesn't. And most of their stuff will sell, but it will take time. A Road House or Thriller are snapped up quickly. But their latest ultra release, Sidekicks clearly isn't selling. I have a second copy for sale and it's not receiving much attention. I wonder if this model is sustainable, because if they bet on a title and it doesn't sell, it might cause problems for some of the smaller or more passion project titles that they were planning on.

    • @TheOriginalFuzz
      @TheOriginalFuzz ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm guessing you're probably not getting many bites on Sidekicks because it's still in-print at this point and easily available from VS. I mean, it just came out, so unless you're selling it for less than what VS is charging, I wouldn't expect someone to buy it on eBay or privately over getting it directly from the source. I sure wouldn't... I bought it directly from VS. And I've seen a ton of other people snagging Sidekicks up too and talking about it in their TH-cam videos and in Facebook groups. Seems like a pretty popular VS release right now to me. So I think we need to factor in whether or not something is even still available from VS when assessing how well a product is performing on the secondary market. I'm not surprised Thriller would be snagged up quickly... that box set is now out of print. And Road House is just a much higher-profile release in general, so that's likely always going to be popular.

Awesome video bro!. I wished Disney would release their Disney + shows like Star Wars & MCU shows aswell 90's Marvel animated shows. My friends and i prefer physical format because you buy it, own it and they bonus features added, alternate cuts etc. If you stream and even buy movies and that streaming provider loses their rights on movies, shows you bought, it wont be there anymore. I try telling people that and theres multiple streaming with movies and shows that you feel you need to subscribe to all if you wanna watch anything. Those are the two main downsides of streaming for me. Im always buying dvds and still stream both. So like you said, its money Disney etc. losing out on themselves. I know the elderly have a heck of a time learning how to stream.

As far as I can tell, the decision to go 4K is made from corporate, not the director's. They can ask directors whether they want to participate in the process but it isn't required. Most of your so-called top-tier directors loathe 4K because of the sausage-making reveal of the filmmaking process that the 4K format shows.

a star wars set that had multiple cuts of the original trilogy would definately sell
the disney plus cut of a new hope is hated cause of the Greedo line where he says Maclunkey
and that same line probably appears on a version of the film on digital
if they did a new star wars original trilogy set, for both digital and disc
that had Multiple cuts, the theatrical versions and special editions (up until a certain date, where you Leave Out the Maclunkey line)
    this would Respect the fanbase

Did you considered the upfront fixed cost for a physical release? Because i'm sure that would be the main concern and roadblock for releases, and its where its important to show that there is a decent amount of demand to justify it. I'm sure you're aware and it would be great to know roughly what these fixed costs are?
I'm not even talking about restoration or new transfers - as you say in many cases HD or even 4k transfers already exist (and are put on streaming). But even then im pretty sure there is a decent fixed upfront cost in authoring, especially 4k disks with DV etc, but even standard bluray - where all the language tracks, commentaries, subtitles etc need to be QA'd by a person. The authoring process (esp for 4k) is a niche, highly technical process that would require a presumably well paid professional.

Disney seems to be the toughest - how do you get thru to Disneys execs about the classic Disney stuff from the 20’s - 80’s ….. the feature length animated films went to blu ray , but by and large all the extended live and animated short and long form materials have disappeared. Most of the stuff hasn’t been around since dvd.
With a case like Disney , they have the films and shorts, and tons of old bonus features in house - it will only be remastering costs . Yet so much isn’t even on the Disney plus platform . Why ? And now they’re also not happy with the revenue streams from Disney plus alone ??
I was waiting for remastered blu ray or 4K versions of classic Disney material - I missed out on a lot of the great Disney treasures line , and was hoping for a nice anniversary edition of films like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea . And they have the Dox catalog now too -
How can they just sit on this stuff ?? And how can we contact the right people with Disney (especially for folks like myself who don’t do social media ) Are there any email addresses the average fan can use ??
