Hello friends, jumping in here! We are very aware Graham loves to speculate. And that he’s not formally or academically credentialed.
Please remember, anyone in 1990 saying human history was likely older than the “academic consensus” starting point of the agrarian revolution at the time would have been heavily criticized before the discovery of Gobekli Tepe itself.
Given that, and the remarkable carbon dating and fact pattern of the site, one might say it’s ours and Graham’s duty to speculate? While speculation is often wrong, if it’s followed up by real archeological work, it can be very productive and push human knowledge forward. And often that speculation and work is done by uncredentialed outsiders. For a historical example, just look up the speculations of heavily ostracized German businessman Heinrich Schliemann (spoiler: his findings helped lead to the discovery of Troy!
We don’t agree with Graham on everything. And conflating speculation and fact is harmful. We made sure that the distinction is VERY clear in our video. The clear facts around Gobekli Tepe are remarkable on their own and that’s what the video focuses on often reminding the viewer not to superimpose their own biases as to the actual function of the site.
Please chime in with any substantive disagreements you have about any of the material here - we’re always open to learning more! But we definitely set a boundary around hateful and uninformed comments 🙏🏻😅

The video clearly distinguishes between Gobekli Tepe’s remarkable existence - and any more lofty thoughts on why / how it exists and who built it… questions any HUMAN BEING (archeologist, journalist, or otherwise) should naturally ask given its miraculous presence. thank you for acknowledging this but with a platform such as yours was there not better options other than the extremely controversial non-archeologist when discussing profound archeological discoveries like this? obviously theres alot more that goes into this but it just seems like he was the first to agree to doing it because you had a huge following.

It only takes one guy to dig up some dinosaur bones somewhere for the idea to spread that there once lived giant creatures, and once people's imaginations start running wild, well...
I say it all the time, humans exactly as we know them today have reportedly been around for about 400,000 years. I promise with all my heart, we were not just staring at a cave wall for 390,000 years before we realized a rock can go on top of another rock
I don't remember where I heard this, but it speaks on human development. Similar thought exercise to your statement. Our current rate of technological development, roughly 11,000 years, is repeated nearly 40 times in 400,000 years. What's to say they were using backhoes and massive excavators to build gobeklitepe only to have everything wiped out and reset by any number of cataclysmic event- asteroid, volcano, or weapons of mass destruction. Obviously this is just speculation, but it's an interesting thought practice.

Well not 'Exactly as we know em', at least theres yet to be any proof of that. Oldest known 'modern Human' fossil is around 300.000 y/o.
And sure they would sit in a cave for thousands of generations, why wouldnt they? Do you see any other apes building skyscrapers, vehicles or just a plain and simple fire? Those furry friends have been around for pretty much the same time and they are still living in the forest dont they?
I do believe there is A LOT more to our history, but there is no hard evidence (yet).
We excavate and date microbial fossils that are older than that. The mere fact that we don't find human ones that old destroys this theory.
It’s not just ‘a stone on top of another rock’. This takes years to build, maybe decades. How can a group of people achieve this without farming or domesticated animals?

You should really visit Bosnia during the Sarajevo film festival in August. It's so amazing and inspiring seeing a country with such big scars suddenly being filled up with young people from all over the world. The whole diaspora comes back and just parties for some week straight, and they're the nicest people despite all the hardship they've been through. The streets are filled with free concerts and raves, and there's just happiness and joy everywhere. Really reccommend!

The "pyramids" are an intentional tourist trap and are kind of like a local legend, similar to Bigfoot. There's nothing in or under them. If you need further evidence of that, the guy who originally called them pyramids admits this very thing.

as someone in the field of archaeology, the name graham hancock always seems to cause a stir lol. a site like this is certainly interesting, because it doesn't necessarily show the earliest form of a culture. carvings like these, the shape of the stones, all of it came from time and practice, not just overnight. i wish i knew more about this particular site, but it is most likely not the earliest form of organization, but that has yet to be discovered!
site note: would LOVE to hear more from the archaeologists working on the site and how they came up with their theories about the site. very interesting!
I like Graham because he challenges the pre-established narratives we've come up with over time. It's all subject to change once more information comes forward about our past. Not to say his theories are spot on, but it's not to see alternative theories about where we came from and how advanced our ancestors were.
If Gobekli Tepe was found in Sub-Saharan Africa, nobody would deny it was evidence of a civilization. academics are going out of their way to not call this civilization because the people who created it were white, and there is without a doubt a strong anti-white bias in Marxist academia.
This is how I feel. Also an archaeologist here and agree. They didn’t need to take that angle and talking to archaeologists who work on the site would have great perspectives

Sources for what? No one knows for sure what happened 10000 years ago, everyone is offering their best guesses
@@SuperMo15 well who came up with these theories? What is the theory grounded in, what supports and argues for or against the theories? Or for the intro which gives us some background information. Where does that come from? Huge difference in the validity of information from a journalist and professional archaeologist.

Gobekli Tepe is NOT a temple. No one refers to it that way anymore since much more discovery has been made around it. People lived there. And it is not the oldest; it's part of a complex of similar structures.

Graham is on a mission trying to uncover if what we know about human history is wrong. Miniminuteman is someone who tries to disprove people like graham and tell us the established history. You can read whats established in books. it can be fascinating to understand both perspectives but miniminuteman wouldn't challenge us to think beyond what's already been told.

Graham Hancock is not an Archaeologist. He has a degree in sociology. This doesn't mean his opinion should be rejected at face value (although as an Archaeology student myself it pains me to hear the absolutely wild opinions he throws around without a shred of scientific evidence), but having his opinions put at the same level of credibility of those who studied for years and decades in the field is disrespectful at best. Especially because none of these internationally recognized archaeologists and scientists were given the opportunity to share their theories and actual evidence.
I really think you should do a follow up video in wich you give these people and theories the space they need and deserve.
That's the problem. Archeologists stick so strictly to the facts that there is no room for theorizing. Generalists are important for developing theories which can then be tested by specialized scientists.

@@IanSizzler I think you misunderstand how scientific research works. A lot of research, especially in history, archeology and anthropology may be done using circumstantial, incomplete or otherwise lacking evidence. Because we certainly did not find everything there is to see, any type of avant-garde research can be spotty, incomplete or otherwise lacking. The difference between Hancock and actual researchers is that researchers can admit where their research falls short, needs expanding or further field research to be substantiated. You can put up a theory for an ancient civilization and present evidence for it that may not be enough, but could be just a step that other researchers or you yourself can take to yet another step. Hancock does not take steps, he leaps forward and falls ass first into spikes.
Some archaeologists have been blacklisted for their discoveries that counteract mainstream narratives. A paper isn’t a substitute for decades of research. Failing to consider the points he raises is missing the point of any kind of scientific curiosity.

I’m a Dr. in Archaeology and I have to say I’m so sad and disappointed in Yes Theory for this video.
There was so much that was incorrect and having the only “expert” someone who has been heavily discredited is a statement. It takes away from the real amazement of this site and the past we should be promoting!
Yes Theory wouldn’t promote conspiracy theories but to someone who knows the field, this takes on a lot of the same tropes that conspiracy theorists do.
Many archaeologists discuss how we continue to discover more things that increase our knowledge of the past. And are EXCITED to learn more. That’s why we do it!
I know you can make videos that showcase the best of our world and our past, but they need to created in a considered way.
Please give us examples for what was incorrect in the information that we provided. Thank you. 🙏🏽

You basically proved so many peoples preconceived notions about academic gatekeeping, right. While these sites in Turkey are incredible and somewhat blow out our previous conceptions of the origins of human cultures and civilization out the water, they may not even the earliest evidence of the above. One should consider the surprisingly sophisticated art in cave paintings from as early as 40,000 BC in sites on all six continents inhabited by humans - and keep in mind that cave paintings are the earliest known SURVIVING forms of art. However, how many countless other works of art were created earlier on less durable media have long since disintegrated without a trace?
Regardless, it's quite amazing what you've gotten to see and thank you for sharing with us (and I look forward to your adventures in the ancient underground metropolis).
So after this video I did a bit of my own research: It is not uncommon for people to have settlements as hunter-gatherers before starting agriculture. In fact, the oldest findings for this date back around 20 000 years ago. However it was previously believed that people in the stone age lived in small, isolated groups. The special thing about Göbekli Tepe is, is that it is so big and technically challenging to construct, it is impossible to be done by only a small number of people. So this must have been a collective effort, a cooperation, maybe a civilization - challenging the idea of isolated tribes. It's the earliest known proof for such a collectiveness.

Fertile crescent like Turkey on the other hand was always believed to be the center of sessile lifestyle, which is somewhat of a prerequisite for civilization
It doesn’t take a massive collective and organization of people and skills to draw a painting on a cave wall. So I wouldn’t necessarily say the cave paintings are earlier examples of “civilization” but they’re still incredibly impressive and made by a sophisticated people not just “dumb cavemen.”

I’ve been there last year. That place is truly amazing, the more you look the more minute details you can catch! I’ve also been to Karahan Tepe, it’s even more phenomenal! There you can see pillars still under the earth…not proud to say it but I actually stood carefully on one of them :) Truly magical!

If you follow/watch Matthew LaCroix he is about to go to a site that's apparently either same age or older. Also in this area there are many other sites that have not been excavated or explored, there are stones sticking out of the mountains all over (tops of the T shaped pillars.)

I seriously want you guys to consider going to India and explore the ancient culture there. There are very old structures there, you would be shocked.
But only if you find some conspiracy believer for the video to seem cool and interesting.
I mean here in the USA we learn from grade five (9 years old) what the Indus Valley was, and the Vedic texts, and the story of Buddha, and we read Siddartha in grade eight.
Except kids tend to hate school and learning here, so they probably don’t remember learning it.

True, There are some temples which are considered to be around 10,000 years old and Temples carved out of mountains, which is an engineering Marvel for even now.

Been a fan of Yes Theory for years and am interested in Graham Hancock's general ideas, but was sad to see this video was missing the perspective of a real archeologist with current facts and theories about this site. This site is such an important one and scientists' understanding of it changes constantly, such that several things your local tour guide said are not currently true. This channel has such a huge audience reach, I'm sad this video wasn't better planned or fact checked before publishing.

@@AustinKoleCarlisle real archeologists are why this site is known in the first place and graham hancock shows respect to the hard work done by archeologists many times. He has problems with prevailing narratives pushing aside new ideas and group think. But we need archaeologists. With better technology, funding, and cross disciplinary work with scientists from other fields, we can uncover more without relying on old methods.

I love this type of content, history is so fascinating!
Half of this video is about the people filming it rather than the actual site. I did learn some things but overall do not enjoy watching people geek out about what they are seeing. I want to see what they see. Learn about something. I understand how exciting it was for you all, but keep in mind your audience. I personally enjoy Graham a lot and watched this because of his name, and to say he is featured when he is barely in this is misleading and did not sit well. Not a bad video, but not one I would recommend to others either.

I love this!! One of the best videos I've seen in a while. The idea of an unanswered question, a change from the "norm" or a leap from the known into the potentially unknown embodies the idea of Yes Theory. Its not necessarily a yes this is all correct but, yes I am willing to listen, to think independently, to understand and imagine one was and say yes lets explore something undefined.

Gobekli Tepe has been known about since the 1990s. It isn't "rewriting" anything any more, its pretty well established. There's now understood to be a whole "proto-civilization" that spanned much of the region with a whole bunch of identified sites sharing similar characteristics and designs. One in Boncuklu Tarla is even thought to have a kind of rudimentary sewer system for the village!

I am a geologist, and while watching the video I saw that the rock formations of two locations are different. It is interesting how the ancient people chose the location or maybe different rocks for making a statue.
