Hi @Mitchell Hooper, Climbers suffer from parts of the skin tearing off. We call them "flappers" which basically happens when the skin or calluses get too thick. Climbers remedy this by cutting the skin down with a razor or sanding it. It might be worth looking at some videos on how climbers do this.
Of course this may well be different in strongman but you never know, you might be able to avoid this happening again with some appropriate skin care. Good luck

Almost broke the World Record too. I knew he had been training for that and likely broke the WR unofficially in training but after shredding his hands I wasn't sure if he'd attempt it just for half a point.
But fuck that! He was there to put on a show! And that he did! Lol
FWIW, I think Tom could have also broken the record on Saturday if he had attempted it.
I think Tom was a lot closer to smashing the axle record in my opinion. Tactics came into play and Tom did the right thing but he deffo had it in him
What I love the most is how the athletes support each other.
Was really nervous to watch this after seeing the results of event 1, but I actually respect you way more now because of how well you handled the setback. What a great role model for everyone to look up to!
Mitch you are a champion. You did us all proud, amazing you managed as well as you did considering your poor hands. 2nd place in the event but 1st in our hearts. I hope your hands heal quickly and you come back stronger than ever! Why you guys can’t wear gloves is beyond me.

Fair play Mitch, you’ve given it your all, this was always going to be between you and Tom, 1 mistake (or in your case hands being shredded) the other is going to take full advantage. If you don’t win this year you’ll have more fire in your belly to win it back next year. Tom hasn’t put a foot wrong this year, the 2 of you are a level above the rest. Great sportsmanship and I’m writing this with 1 event left to go (so anything could still happen) but you’ve proved you’re worthy of your current title of WSM. Had you won the first event then it would be a different story but that’s strongman and competition. Much respect👍🇬🇧
Great comeback from the hand issues. Loz mentioned that blisters ripping is usually a sign of too much humidity on the handles/palms. was there anything you would do differently now knowing what happened that could have prevented this?

Is there a rule on Gloves for certain events? Any advantages (not ripping hands likely being one) or disadvantages to gloves?

It’s interesting you dont use knee or elbow sleeves on the axle. I feel i get about 10% extra from them combined. Its cool how what works for one may not for others i can see how at that size it could impair mobility at the elbow.

The ripped calluses only bother you after the event.He as others are so focused during it should be a very small parammeter.Time for the support team to kick it up notches and assist him with it though.Been there with physical job with constant gripping/ sweating,stinging.Hands take forever to heal with constant flexion.Mitch after the event will not use them and with his metabolism they will be right as rain in not much over a week.

Do you find that wearing a ring makes any difference in performance? I'd imagine it could slightly compromise grip.

Not sure why Mitch is wearing his wedding ring while competing or even in training. Not saying I am comparable to Mitch, but I've noticed that doing even the least taxing exercises with a ring on causes skin to tear or just generally sets your grip in a compromised position

Maybe worthwhile speaking with some pro-climbers regarding their handcare routines? They have to tend to calluses all the time to prevent them from ripping and becoming flappers.
Boggles my mind that he is wearing his, or frankly 'a', wedding ring.

I'm just a fan of the sport in general and like all the guys, but I don't understand how Mitch has the most obnoxious haters of pretty much any strongmen after seeing him giving props to the other guys after event one despite it going poorly for him.
I've read comments saying hooper is arrogant; however tom said he knew he was gonna win, and apparently that's not arrogant to those same users. A bit of bias.

I used to do long distance running, not on the same level as mitch but still. and the amount of grit and "push through the pain" it taches you cannot be understated. massive respect for carrying on after an inury that would of knocked out most people
Three points can be closed down in Conan and deadlift
He essentially needs a 5 point swing in Conan and deadlift to win Tom
Tom will win stones hands down think Mitch may struggle in stones with his hands

Are gloves not allowed?
1. In many events, no.
2. They are often horrible for your grip and inhibit it.
3. Putting gloves over those torn calluses would just probably tear them up worse in many scenarios.
