James calling Top Gear a sitcom is spot on and it's weird I never saw it that way before but it totally is. That blend of sitcom and genuine serious car show was something so special that I don't think anyone could replicate and it's why Top Gear basically collapsed without May, Hammond and Clarkson.
Top Gear Series 10 onwards barring a few good episodes and specials was a scripted clown show! Watch the old stuff he mentions, it was genuinely three blokes cocking about with genuine conversations and reactions! Having been on a bit of a top gear/ Grrand tour binge over Christmas, i realised something. James May is one of my favourite "celebrities". Hes a bit of a national treasure, but remains kind of under the radar. He seems too normal to be a celebrity so you kind of forget he's at all famous. Bravo to James. He seems a good egg too!
I love how James talks about Top Gear and just simply says “Top Gear” rather than beating around the bush like Hammond and Clarkson and saying something like “on a car show that I hosted a long time ago in a different life.”
May’s suggestion that people think that they live in 1 large house with all their cars parked outside sounds like a freest idea for a special… Amazon, make it happen
Honestly watching the 3 of them have a sleepover would be funny as heck. That old TG episode where they spent the night in a caravan next to a train track and May described it as romantic while sleeping on the same bed as Hammond made me laugh so much.
But even if you do like it and are dedicated, you still might not be very good at it. Conversely, a generally morose person that views life only as a duty, might not like anything productive, but they might be both skilled and motivated to be very good. (I know him, he's a physicist.)
It’s a bit unfair when successful people say this because there are plenty who did the same and wished they’d gone for something more secure even if it was uninteresting and mundane. I am in a similar position at a big accounting firm that pays for my chartership but I don’t enjoy it at all and have no interest in accounting. Thing is it is secure income and to leave it to pursue something I’m interested in would be very high risk
It might be weird but I like listening to the Top Gear guys talk about their early days, makes me inspired about working towards my passions and goals. I could listen to James May for hours lol.
My sons and I learned many things from Top Gear and the Grand Tour. If you have fun your job won't be boring. If you can find a job that allows you to act like a kid, even better. This is what we loved about TG and GT. Watching three guys acting like fools and loving it. We miss the shows and the antics that made us laugh and feel good. For Mr. May, I enjoy Oh Cook. It's fun and down-to-earth, and one can learn a thing or two. I'm waiting for Season 3. Well done sir.
The charm of James on Top Gear it seems, is counterintuitively the fact he never planned or aspired to be on a show like the revamped Top Gear. I can't think of many situations where a show or job offer would go with the man who wasn't totally enthused about getting the position, but for the dynamic of the 3 presenters on Top Gear, that's exactly what they needed.
Very good interview, James is given the chance to talk openly without interruptions, questions are well balanced, enjoyable to watch, thanks for the upload
the only problem with his advice is that you dont always know what you like, i ended up doing many different jobs and turns out my vocation has been to do something i remember sitting on a bench in high school telling my friend i'd never do that job. I do agree, dont stay somewhere you are unhappy but do try to make the best of things if you are. My advice dont chicken out and dont be scared if things look difficult.
And one has to remember that the Top Gear / Grand Tour trio have something in common. They didn't end up having the jobs they wanted as children and drifted from one career to another. Clarkson didn't know what he wanted to do after graduation. Hammond wanted to be an architect. May thought he'd be a teacher. If their experience is anything to go by, it'd validate what you said. Go out and try stuff till you find a good paying job or a job you actually find yourself liking despite saying you won't previously.
Fantastic content...finally a producer using the opportunity to ask some actually interesting questions... rather than get them to try some random food from a different country, haha. Great interview, more of it please.
I love Capt. Slow. No disrespect to Richard or Jeremy but James has always been my favorite character in their adventures. His work after TG is awesome and entertaining and quite diverse. And what’s with the facial sunburn? Need some aloe buddy.
I could watch any episode of top gear or grand tour and be happy. Im 26 and i know ill be sitting there on my deathbed watching these guys far into the future
The subtitles messed up and according to them he said, 'That's when the move into cars and MTV started'. Which makes me think it's a shame he didn't present Pimp My Ride.
Really enjoyed "Our Man in India" even more than the Italian edition possibly because less energy was wasted into humiliating James and more into him walking around creating great content. Hope the series continues, especially since the Grand Tour has concluded.
I usually hate these interviews, but I'd listen to James read the T&Cs of... well anything. Hes the GOAT of television, the reason I started watching top gear in 2010ish, despite no interest at all in cars. About that "what would you do differently" advice for a younger version of yourself: I agree. I would like to elaborate and say "don't listen to people who say you should never give up". My reasoning is that sure, if you know what you want to do and you have a clear goal and mindset of succeeding, by all means, don't give up when things get tough. But if you are doing things because you believe it is expected of you (or you at least once thought you knew this was what you wanted to do) but everything just falls apart time and time again: give up, and give up sooner than you thought you would. I wasted years in university doing something I thought I was destined to do but very apparently I had no interest in when having time off. Meaning, I struggled with something I had no personal interest in, and the only thing that kept me going was 1) I had started this and I'd better finish it, and 2) I can't give up because what sort of a person would I be then. A happier one, I can tell you. If you are studying economics or something, it doesn't go very well and you have no interest in it and what you do in your spare time is more related to sports or cars or the inner workings of the video game industry, do that instead. I thought I had a master plan by combining my studies subjects with my own interests, and that was generally a good idea, but eventually I had such little interest in what I was studying I didn't see it viable anymore. So, give up! Give up in time, don't do what is expected of you solely because you believe it is expected of you, and have the life you wanted for yourself instead. You'll be much happier, waste much fewer years of your youth and life lust, and eventually find yourself the life you were actually meant to have.

I say this with a heavy heart, but the last few Grand Tour things have also felt a little tired and old fashioned - it was a great formula that rocked british TV in the mid 2000s and went to great heights by the time Top Gear ended, but i do agree that it's perhaps time to let go
i mean you can definitely tell that top gear is an old show but most of it is still as entertaining as ever. a lot more interesting and entertaining than TGT ever was imo. But that´s probably because they coppied everything from TopGear apart from the stuff that actually interested me the most which was cheap car challanges, both inside and outside the UK
James shaved his goatee? That's a pity, I think he looked slightly better with it and longer hair. Anyway, still lovely to hear him talk about anything.
Growing up in America in the 1960's in Calif I became a fanatic of European Cars after my dad bought a New 1966 MK 3000 Austin Healey. I was more interested with autocross and a car that would handle well. My HS Friend had a 1960 Morris Minor with a 327 chevy engine in it and a semi-tubed frame.
I really think now is the right time for all 3 of them to do someone together again. It would get HUGE ratings. Now is the time as we are all getting duped by the powers that want to be, especially about cars, travel, logistics & pretty much everything 🤷♂️
They are getting on a bit so i understand why TGT is coming to an end but I'd like to see them on the sofa again and just talk about cars, and review normal everyday cars- like the original TG pre 2000. Just a 30 minute show, maybe 15 episodes a year. Not physically taxing and not too difficult to do.
India - if you were to ask me to describe India in one word most of the ones to come immediately to mind would be uncomplimentary. However James is right. For all its obvious minuses it is indeed vibrant and stimulating and I love it. I would swap our British order and propriety (suppression) for a fraction of this Indian vibrancy to be introduced into our subdued society.
“There wasn’t any ambition, it’s just what happened.” The good ol’ days where you just wandered into having a column in a magazine or newspaper. Now you need a Master’s in journalism and 10 years experience and they will consider you for an unpaid internship. 🤣
Top Gear 2003-15 was fun at the time but I do wish we could move on. I actually think the return of "dull" magazine style TV shows of the 70s-90s would be welcomed very warmly these days, the visual style is very Retrowave and popular whereas Top Gear's kinda obnoxious and doesn't age well; a new "boring" show could have some more interesting content than they used to (remember all those minutes spent on random car accessories you didn't need...?) but that old style should come back. To see a new Top Gear show (doesn't have to use the same name) that was of the Noel Edmonds/Chris Goffey/William Woollard sorta era; Tiff Needell and James May fit in well in that vibe. But spare me Clarkson or anyone like him.
Someone should ask them how come all three are decent enough actors to pull that shit off. That´s my biggest irritation, they were tricking us and it took until some outlandish stuff to happen until most people became aware of the extent of the scripting. I feel fooled.
Interesting interview. But he is wrong in one aspect, just because you don't like doing something doesn't mean you can't ever be good at it, ability is not linked to enjoyment. I've done loads of jobs I didn't like doing, it didn't stop me doing my best or becoming good at them.
the closest you get to equality in a car show. Two blokes and an old woman. Still far better than the braindead cover versions, which rely on recycling the format only
Lol, you can't beat the original 3. We did top gear in the US but as always we ruined it like everything else we touch. Clarkson, Hammond and May made that show their own, everything else is just a cheap copy
Eh no. Have you seen the original Office, or Coupling instead of Friends? The originals were much worse. The reason Top Gear outside of the UK has always done poorly is because of the personalities and dynamic relationships. Top Gear Australia was horrible too. The problem with the American version is they tried to skip steps, and they tried to control who the hosts were. Jeremy picked both of his co-hosts, and let things grow.
what's happening with this fella, is he going through some crisis old people are going through, he seems desperate not to look or sound 'old fashioned' or old, he's getting to be quite ridiculous. early top gear was fine james. a lot better than grand tour at least.
Who knew James would end up being the coolest most modern one of the trio.
I'm not sure he is. The others have just caught up with the prematurely old Captain Slowly.

To see a new Top Gear show (doesn't have to use the same name) that was of the Noel Edmonds/Chris Goffey/William Woollard sorta era; Tiff Needell and James May fit in well in that vibe. But spare me Clarkson or anyone like him.
A regular and practical car review show would be great. We still have Motorweek fortunately, but they aren't very in depth sometimes.
He's been an old woman for the last 30 years
sorry james carol vordamon was born 1960
Great IV
Someone should ask them how come all three are decent enough actors to pull that shit off. That´s my biggest irritation, they were tricking us and it took until some outlandish stuff to happen until most people became aware of the extent of the scripting. I feel fooled.
Interesting interview. But he is wrong in one aspect, just because you don't like doing something doesn't mean you can't ever be good at it, ability is not linked to enjoyment.
I've done loads of jobs I didn't like doing, it didn't stop me doing my best or becoming good at them.
"I was too unorganized." Proves this video was AI generated!
ay May is getting old as well 😢
james for pm...
Yahoo? I thought your company was dissolved.
the closest you get to equality in a car show. Two blokes and an old woman. Still far better than the braindead cover versions, which rely on recycling the format only
Haven't seen yahoo related anything in a long time
We hope you enjoyed
What a complete bummer of an interview. Why does EVERY journalist ask the same questions?
This is a genuinely crap interview, the interviewer is dreadful and the thumbnail is hilarious. But James always good value.
What do you mean you were ?
Guaranteed. You never grew up watching Top Gear. LOL.. hence your RECENT DISCOVERY..
No it’s not old fashioned, u were on the edge of controversial
He doesn't look so well. I hope you are ok Mr May.
what's happening with this fella, is he going through some crisis old people are going through, he seems desperate not to look or sound 'old fashioned' or old, he's getting to be quite ridiculous. early top gear was fine james. a lot better than grand tour at least.
I love James but if everyone took his advice the industrial world would grind to a rapid halt.
This is completely bollocks! ❤
Cheese.
Fundamental things people always miss when giving advice to young people is that God exists, and so does the after life.
Father Christmas is also real and so is the Tooth Fairy.
The most boring man on earth, is also the most interesting man on earth lol
Old fashioned and stilted maybe.. but not as "stilted" and frankly forced as the "conversation street" segment on the "Grand Tour".
For the record the old episodes of Top Gear are far better then any of the scripted tat they have released in over a decade now! 😂😂
