      @@archniki_ I know this is 2 years late, but the story continues in a second book? I came across the story as the tv show and am planning to read the book now, however, from the research I've done there's only one book. If there is a second book (or more) could you tell me the name(s)?

      @@Hollyblacknose_gaming_channel The 2nd book is quite 'far off', especially since the author is reportedly ill. The first book is significant dense, a lot more details and history then the series. Even if the 2nd book never came, the 1 book is quite the read all on it's own. Especially since the story of Strange and Norrell concluded.

    • @justindixon1586

      @@Hollyblacknose_gaming_channelthe second book is apparently still happening but with the authors health and the research done to make it a release is a long way down. She made another separate book called piranesi which can hold you over. The strange and norrell sequel will apparently be about childermass and Vinculus.

    By far my favourie scene.

  • @OceanHedgehog
    @OceanHedgehog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    I remember in the books, this caused problems because it changed the underwater geography, and so the Royal Navy was at risk of running aground again because they became unfamiliar with the terrain. The show alluded to the unintended consequences of Strange's reckless use of magic, but didn't do so in this, the most blatant example.

      Plus he assumed that the crew of the ship would know how to rope the horses he had summoned to draw them to deeper water.
      Y'know the way that all people who work with their hands must know how to do that sort of thing, "servants' work" I think you'd call it.
      (Admittedly after his time in the peninsular he wouldn't have made such a mistake barring misplaced churches and 'Vauxhall-gardens' magic)

    • @ComradeRemus
      @ComradeRemus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      This scene is intended to establish Strange as a powerful magician, and to show the seeds of envy being sown in Norrell. Those asides in the novel were very interesting, but when you only have 7 hours to tell the story, every scene has to be important.

    Strange: Impromptu summoning of sand horses with a dramatic and impressive display.

    And this is the moment Mr. Norrell knew that Jonathan Strange is a far better man well magician than he will ever be.

    • @fomoran
      @fomoran 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Come now sir, each is a great magician (after a fashion), it is in how they use their power, one from the head and the other from the heart.
      No doubt a long time spent bound together shall teach each the strength of the other.
      Whether they shall cleave to one another as man to wife, each complimenting the goodness and failings of the other.
      Or, if you shall allow me- they shall cleave their bonds and emerge more rounded in their skills, motivations and perhaps, more importantly, the knowledge that may inform their own innovation.
      For my part, as a Norrelite, I see a master worried by his apprentice playing with such wild and ungrounded magics.
      That you see the existential worry of the apprentice exceeding his master, speak to your sympathies and little more than that.
      I see a child alighting upon the secret of fire, after spying flint and tinder used.
      True, all they need now are the tools and they can have fire, but the child knows nothing of what stray sparks or embers might cause.
      Any watching parent would be fearful of their recklessness and hope to beat some restraint into them, such that 'safety' is our watchword and not 'power' (though it may come at great cost).
      I trust that this finds you as it leaves me, proud of their story, as it has been told to us, and hopeful of their future promise.

      More or less Norell uses the magic set up by the Raven King, he invoices the promises and deals he set up for magicians of Britain. Which is why his magic is so dry and unspectacular it's basically the magical equivalent of a contract "perusing to paragraph 12 of the sea spirit agreement with the raven king entered on behets of all Britain I invoice the the invisible beacon" while Strange forges deals on the spot using his talent and raw magic to subjugate nature spirits nearby
