On Lake Simcoe the whitefish relate to deeper water. Try looking for a mid lake hump, 15 to 30 feet deep, surrounded by much deeper water. Fish the top and slopes.
Sure is a smelt! They're tasty! Used to catch a few of them all the time out there while perch fishing the deeper water! Also used to net them in the spring. Biggest one I ever caught was 11 inches long. That smelt was HUGE!
Whitefish are delicious in sushi and just shore lunch batter also. I don't always smoke all of mine sometimes I just find different recipes to put them in makes a great chowder as well
They'll bite all day long in the deep water. Sometimes in the shallower water they too as well, but generally I've had my best luck before 9 am when fishing shallower water for them.
Rainbow smelt is actually considered a game fish! They are delicious usually guys net them when they go on a spawn run. What do you consider driving really far where do you draw the line as far as hours driving?
In my experience mostly on lake Simcoe in Canada when I white fish it seems like they kind of peruse the general area the hit comes and goes as they swim circles around the basins. Depending on the amount in the school that comes through sometimes you hit for a while sometimes it's quick and done for a bit
Whitefish tips. ……25ft minimum when I go I fish 30,60,90 ft when fishing shallow (30ft) it needs to be early like first light once the traffic starts like utv’s/8am which ever comes first pack up and go deep like 60 to 90 the way u are jigging is perfect small lifts and slow don’t forget to pause that’s usually when I get strikes. To answer your question you can move around but they do move in schools so staying put works just fine. The best way for u to really learn is to get a guide for a day yeah it sucks paying but that’s how I started now it’s too easy plus it’s really not that expensive for just one day I usually limit out every time I go just from what I’ve learned.
@@dajahvue a 36in Precision is probably the perfect rod for whitefish if you’re going to be fishing with the same setup with the bottom jig and slider / drop shot! I do like the 34in for being in my medium flip over shack!
Siiiiick! Looks like a fun time!
Nice, can't wait to see the smoking process.

Try using a small spawn bag when you are using the drop shot rig. The scent seems to drive them wild

I like to be on top of rocks and sight fish whitefish in like 10-12 ft. And yes, I believe that was a smelt
