    Awesome shots! As a farm owner, I wonder what kind of payments Norfolk Southern gave to the land owner. The soil is not only contaminated by the spill but it is also compacted by the huge and heavy equipment driving all over it. Soil compaction is almost as bad as the contamination. We only use treaded machines on our fields.

    aaaaactually. too much salt in the ground stops plants from being able to grow. This fact was used to turn arrable land into wasteland to deny it to the enemy in medievil times. It can take generations for the land to recover. It does. but it takes a LONG time. Though I'm sure it's something that is fixable in the modern day

    I’ve seen their work firsthand - 16 cars scattered over a quarter mile of double track on the Pocahontas division , 20 degrees outside - they put an army to work , threw up lights and fired up the torches ; the right of way was cleared , torn up track replaced and put back in operation in less than two days !!

    Those workers probably thought this reconstruction was a piece of cake. Terrain was level, relatively accessible and didn’t require equipment to cut their way into the site. It wasn’t on a cliff, mountainside, riverside or close to a major traffic artery. Looks like the weather wasn’t too terrible, either. A major task any way you slice it,though. I’m merely trying to put o positive spin on things. Great job by any stretch. Thanks for the awesome footage and for taking the time to go out of your way to bring it to us. Best.

    Lets not build pipelines, Lets ship oil by rail instead!
    Every time I see one of these derailment videos, that's the first thing that comes to mind....
    I realize oil wasn't the product scattered on the ground in this video but it could have been!
    Usually an oil derailment doesn't just pollute the ground but the air as well (as the oil burns)

Years ago when I was hiking in the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, I came a across an entire long freight train toppled over on a long curve. Box cars were still locked so it had to be recent, but track was clear. It never made the news because it happened out of sight. I came back later and all I saw were a few metal wheels that had slid down a mountain slope. Would have made an interesting video. I walked about what seemed like a half mile and could not find the end.

      Due to the realignment of divisions, this will be the only H line. Since we (peidmont)became part of the pokey some line segments are being changed because of duplicates...You guessed it, Pokey wont change anything of theirs.. Theyre just gonna change ours.. Lol . Effecctive 2-1-21, the Greensboro-Goldsboro line (H0.0 - H130.0) will now be the NC line, since it is owned by the NCRR anyway.
      The Spencer to Ashville line (S0.0 - S141.0) will now the the AS line.

      @@Nscalestuff Ok so since the Piedmont it part of the Pokey (Pocahontas?) Division now, does that mean the entire Piedmont Division is going to be getting a name change, or is it just certain lines, like the 2 you mentioned? Or will the two divisions still retain their respective names? I heard NS was realigning their divisions, but never took the time to keep on top of the changes so I'm rather lost at the moment.

    • @Nscalestuff
      @Nscalestuff 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SOU6900 there are only 3 divisions total now. That was effective in Nov, 2020.
      The Piedmont, Harrisburg, Lake, and Pocahontas divisions are now collectively known as the Blue Ridge division. The Div. Hq is based in Roanoke, VA.
      Since when there were numerous operating divisions, there were line segments with the same initials on different divisions. basically the Harrisburg division had and H line, and the piedmont had an H line. Since both of those prior individual divisions are now under a larger division, one of the lines had to be re labled.. Since division HQ is in Roanoke (NW terrirtory) all of the prior individual divisions that make up the Blue Ridge are all N&W (pre 1982) . Why would they change their lines... The piedmont division, which was all Southerm Railway (pre 1982) is basically the bastard child of the realignment into the Blue Ridge.. So anything that needed to be changed of course will be prior Southern stuff

    Why does America have so many derailments compared to Europe or other Western countries?

    • @ohboy2592
      @ohboy2592 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because we move hundreds of times more freight and passenger cars so the odds of it happening are greater

    • @tonyjones9442
      @tonyjones9442 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ohboy2592 yes, but if you include all of Europe its properly more than the usa in terms of trains per mile. You only need to look at regular passenger timetables in Europe to notice that. Even between major US cities there's not that many passenger services, e.g gare de nord or Waterloo.
      They may look a lot to an American but when you compare, say the channel tunnel, that has 400 trains per day its not that many. Also the average speed in Europe is faster.
      In terms of odds there should be more derailments in Europe not usa.

      @@thekenyan1697 and I don’t blame the crews at all with these derailments from NS unless it was caused by a lousy engineer, those guys are just trying to get the train safely from point a to b, I’ve noticed most if not all of these derailments with NS recently have derailed over a cross over, which the crew has no control over what happens over that
