I actually think this is a really affordable and viable way to push "mobile VR".... sure, OCULUS RIFT is cool... but having to use only your phone is pretty neat... Google should work on a proper prototype for this.... (by proper I mean, something with a strap and made of other than cardboard.

One minute I'm learning how to make a VR headset out of cardboard, the next I'm questioning life and existence. Also the Matrix. *That escalated quickly!* Sweet video as always Lew.
+SpaztallicA I don't think so... The parts themselves would cost more than that, and the company would also have to pay for advertising, shipping and packaging, and of course pay their employees. The price of the phone isn't just because of the cost of producing the phone itself. Alas, I'm not saying that the phone isn't overpriced... Just that people like you are inflating the problem unnecessarily and spreading misinformation.
+Sir Gent nice paragraph, write a book. it's apple, like most other major companies their products are mass produced in China for mere pennies. and as for advertisement, apple are an established name this day and age, all they need are stylish yet limited products, a logo, birthdays and christmas. I was talking about the costs of the product itself, outsourcing is the best and most profitable way to get your cheap crap into western pop culture by the millions.
SpaztallicA The first link states nowhere that the last model cost around $15 to produce. Additionally, the second link was only to provide reference, as it stated that there are speculations about the actual cost of producing an iPhone 6, and stated the general price that it costs. The only reason I'm defending Apple (though I rarely do) is because idiots like you spread misinformation that only incites unnecessary hatred. Just to piss you off, nitpicks is one word, not two. RIP English. I have no wish to further engage in such frivolous argumentation, so I'll be off. Have fun hating.
+Bonfyre not just 360° videos right now when I press the dots on the corner of my TH-cam screen it says "flag" "resolution" and "cardboard" tap that and the screen splits in two
Great video! This is definitely not only going to give VR more momentum for development but will also give consumers who may have never experienced it excitement for what it could bring in the near future (possibly Google Glass 2.0?).
The Google Cardboard setup was improved a bit, magnets removed, etc. and they call it Version 2. The Google glasses never got off the ground. They sure seemed like they were going to be a thing, but they never really materialized for the general public.
It's pretty good. I tried it a while ago. It's like VR but it uses your phone. I heard that you can play games and watch videos ( I just watched this video in cardboard ) but I didn't try the games part yet.
For everyone asking "does my phone work" first of all your phone will need an gyroscope(if you don't know what that is search it on TH-cam) and if your phone is old af it probably won't work. I think the iPhone 4s and up will work with VR
Petra Gričar The magnet doesn't work. But a friend of my dads (He works at google) said that they will add other ways to access, such as voice commands.
Yeah you're right, holding a piece of cardboard up to my head is enough to convince me to throw away my iPhone and replace it with a low quality plastic piece of crap with a shoddy OS.
+Lewis Wake This is a stupid question. When you put that on, does it make any video you watch into a VR video? Like any video on you tube. Or does it have to be a special virtual reality video?
+joe momma Well, when you tap the Google Cardboard icon and put on the headset, it doesn't make the video VR but what it does is allows you to watch the TH-cam video as it is in front of you like you're in a cinema and watching the screen. you can look around and its just black, but its pretty cool. Doesn't work too well for me and my VR headset at the moment though... (it gives me double vision although basically 98% of everything else I've tried works fine)
That's why they have VR headsets like the Oculus Rift. Google Cardboard is meant to be a minimum for VR. It's a very small experience into VR. Bigger and more expensive VR headsets like the Oculus Rift are way better, however, they cost a lot more and require a great Gaming PC.
Chris Silva Oculus Rift is meant to be for extreme gamers, not everyday people. That is why Google Cardboard was invented. A cheap, good enough quality, VR experience. However, compared to the Rift or the HTC Vive, it is really low quality.
In general, the move to use existing smart phones follows similar integration trends seen in other hardware. People didn't drag entire pacman cabinets into their homes: they just bought consoles that connected to existing televisions. Admittedly, games were born out of a television company, so that was an easy transition: it started with TVs, and then returned there when it was compact enough. Still, the general point is there: new kinds of technology works a lot better when it is mostly made using older, but extremely pervasive equipment.
I've bought the Mattel Viewmaster 3D yesterday for 35€ / 40 Dollars . Very excited if it works with Cardboard-Apps .... Greetings from Germany , nice TH-camr! 👌🏻👍🏻
now this is the good stuff. This is the thing that would let me play with virtual reality for a low price. This is the really fun stuff you can buy with your $20 of birthday money from grandma

The example vids you showed didnt do that and it felt like i was spending more time trying to line up the images versus actually having a VR experience.
Just got one for 2U$ and it's incredible, just made me anxious for getting a quest headset but in my country they cost like 4 full minimum wages where people can barely get a proper job and save money after paying the rent and daily life bills
I have an Iphone 4S. I haven't yet cut out the Google Cardboard yet, and I want to know if I would be able to use it. My concern is that my phone is too small. It is quite short and thick; It was an older phone.
you are amazing they way you have describe the simplicity of VR and how do we use it saved lots of Buck from My pocket, I will always keep an eye on your review, thanks a lot friend appreciate your time
DLLOD 86 yes, my G5 works. pretty much any modern smartphone will work with this, and long as it fits in the cardboard, and has a gyroscope (pretty much 90% of touch screen devices used today).
This isn't virtual reality. VR needs to make my mind and body believe that it's in the environment. That involves tricking all my senses and manipulating my chemical composition. Only when those two things happen will we have advanced to the cool VR future...

Now we wait for Apple to make an identical product but for $100 more.
***** True but that probably won't stop apple!
Do you think this would work on iPhone 3 because I got a free one from the company and have a 3
And everyone acts like Apple just invented it like smart watches
And I will make sure to buy just to be a fanboy
+Sdd Dobson (MustacheMerlin) You know what else worked, and still does work, with IOS? Google Wallet. But they still made apple pay.

Google just removed TH-cam from the cardboard app... A day before I got my cardboard in.
Go to the TH-cam 360° channel, watch a video in it, and tap the Cardboard button next to the Fullscreen button.
+Bonfyre not just 360° videos right now when I press the dots on the corner of my TH-cam screen it says "flag" "resolution" and "cardboard" tap that and the screen splits in two

Fr when he said that I lost some brain cells
I remember when this thing came out, I wanted it so badly because I couldn't afford anything else. Thank God they have affordable headsets now.

This is peak technology! No way they can top this!
Tried it at my school!!! It was kind of fun, although it was some ehh graphics, would be tons better if they added a screen BUT not needing a PC
That's why they have VR headsets like the Oculus Rift. Google Cardboard is meant to be a minimum for VR. It's a very small experience into VR. Bigger and more expensive VR headsets like the Oculus Rift are way better, however, they cost a lot more and require a great Gaming PC.

I used the Google cardboard at elementary school and its so cool you should try it out
Poor iPhone users. Asking if they can use Cardboard.
Wow
You can certain things tho
I wonder whats gonna happen to your phone when you use this cardboard in a highly magnetized area.
Only google can make a device out of cardboard and get it to work properly. Will this work on a iPhone?
Nope, my only regret when I switched from android to iOS. Here's the list.
Fully compatible
Google Nexus 4 and 5
Motorola Moto X
Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Partially compatible

HTC One
Motorola Moto G
Magnetic input not working & headtracking/rendering issues
Samsung Galaxy S3

Use old swimming goggle bands
are u lynx1 in mc4 ?
lynx Modern Combat 4
Rishab jain nope
this is where many VR enthusiasts found VR. crazy huh
Ultrathemeus what vr came from is crazy I had one of these now I have a cheap Walmart one with a head strap to watch TH-cam
Alexander 0111 actually this wasnt the start of VR it was like htc vive and oculus dk1/dk2 or oculus rift
