Thank you for this very informative and inspirational video. I have had the plan since before school of starting private practice and I still feel strongly about it now getting ready to take boards and finishing up with my awesome preceptor who's in private practice. I need to buy your guys program 😊
Are you familiar with the laws that recently passed as it relates to private practice in California? I read that you need three years of relevant experience before transitioning, but I’m not sure how to interpret that. Do they care specifically what kinds of patients I’ve worked with as a PMHNP?
great question, but honestly the wording was written the way its written to be vague. Based on my understanding and from talking to my colleagues, its 3 years of experience under a collaborator/supervising physician then you can be independent but have to have additional 3 years practicing independently then you are able to have a private practice. Yes the unknown is, will the additional 3 years of practicing independently have to be in a specific are for you to practice independently? for example, if you practice inpatient independently but want to open an outpatient practice, will that inpatient experience translate into you being able to have your own outpatient practice? this question keeps popping up but no one can answer it. only time will tell lol
@@LifeofaPsychNP Thank you for the nuanced answer! It’s unfortunate that they’ve left things so convoluted. It would almost make more sense to get licensed elsewhere and provide services virtually if a CA PMHNP wants an assured outcome per private practice, although I don’t see the requirement of a supervising physician to be terribly limiting, personally. Do you have a supervising physician in place to oversee everyone in your own private practice? Do you find that to be a massive expense or a massive headache?
I am in a dual FNP/PMHNP program. I am planning on doing a dual private practice with 3 days a week, focused on Mental Health and 2 Days for Family Practice. Are you going to talk about billing and insurance?
great question, i pay them either salary or on performance basis. Salary is self explainable but for performance, i pay them based on the patients they see and the type of patients they see.
Great video! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and creating a telepsychiatry course! I was really looking forward to enrolling but it said that the course is currently closed for enrollment
Glad it was helpful! I am so sorry that it said that, i worked with my team and was able to fix it. For hte inconvenience, please us this code for 15% off with code: ERROR15. This code will only last until friday, 10/14/2022
Yes, but they will literally kill you. I resigned from my current position (3 weeks to go) because I am seeing between 21 to 25 patients 4 days a week. No matter how much we complained, they refused to meet us halfway. Now, half of their experienced PMHNPs are leaving.
My old job will pay you. You'll see 15-20 patients and once a month, you will work a 2 weeks stretch without a day off then you'll have like 4 days off in a month. Another thing you can do is to work more than one job.

do the psych nps that work in your practice give you (as the main practice owner) a percentage of their earnings? how does all of that work?
great question, i pay them either salary or on performance basis. Salary is self explainable but for performance, i pay them based on the patients they see and the type of patients they see.

Can a PMHNP own their own psychiatric private practice or do we have to have an FNP as well in order to own one?
