After reading John's Introduction - as great as all the others with so much interesting, jam-packed information - my heart sinks because I would have so loved to see Johnna in all the ballets John mentioned. Even if it's just rehearsal footage oh people need to tape as much as possible for posterity and history. Otherwise it's a sin: one performance one night moments in time to just a mere couple of thousand people. After a life-time of daily hard work! Let a stage or studio performance count for more and not be gone forever after a flick in time, disintegrating as aoon as the performance is over & the curtain comes down. Keep the curtain up! Tape. Capture! Document! Please! Dancing careers are SO short. Make tbe dancing live forever through capturing it for forever.
Agreed. Now that we have Cel phone cameras it’s much easier. In my day it was tricky to sneak in a movie camera. Too bad I don’t have any footage of Johnna before she broke her foot. Her dancing changed after that and was never as free and aggressive.
We've all seen Johnna's famous and distinguished sister Gelsey on the stage doing what the sisters do best. Although most of the world now knows nothing of Johnna's existence, some do thanks to Mr. Clifford and his Los Angeles Ballet--and TH-cam. And from where I sit, she is a fine ballerina herself. She had her time in the limelight for a reason... and it shouldn't have been cut so short. But now we know of "the other Kirkland sister." And yes, she really was something. She was a dancer...
She was fantastic! Can’t believe how well she danced after suffering a foot break. I didn’t keep the programme, but I believe I saw her dance with your company in 1979 in a Gershwin piece. She was superb!
Carmen Yes it is. She was a year older and a soloist at NYC Ballet before she joined my company at its inception. This video was after she broke her foot in a car accident. She never fully recovered unfortunately.

Wow! Johnna's legs, feet and line are EXQUISITE. This is SO beautiful. Swan Lake is SO much her role. Boatwright has an incredible line.
So beautiful! R.I.P. Christopher Boatwright.
Love it. How nice that you shared this with us!

Just lovely
Lovely... Both of them.
Love it!
It’s so interesting to me how radically different her and her sister’s styles and looks are. Especially given that they trained at the same school.

That was my Rhapsody in Blue. She was really great in that. Pre broken foot so she really had a lot of power.
so beautiful
Is that Gelseys sister? She’s lovely, her arms...

I don't understand why Chris has her off her supporting leg so frequently.....
