It's not just you or your age, games really are getting worse, it's all style and no substance now, compared to previous generations when it was both, from amazing voice acting, game play (challenging gameplay), soundtracks, storylines, euphoria phyisics, realistic elements which games today are lacking to even the manuals that come with current generation titles don't have much to them, I remembered when games came with posters and manuals (that had color) that were packed with artwork and notes. Also, microtransactions and "early access" crap really has gone out of control, they no longer care about their consumers, it has now turned into a business more focused on profit, not both, yes there are some good titles out there , but that's just SOME, and that's the sad part because it seems like this generation is almost over.

KieranMFilms - I don't know how old you are - But, we used to get all sorts of awesome stuff back in the 80's for computer games: cloth maps, several big manuals, and other accessories. And the games were VERY intelligent! Look up games on eBay like Ultima IV, Ultima Underworld, and other games of that era. So much stuff was included!
Every game tries to be a "huge cinematic experience". Feels like walking from cutscene to cutscene. Then the real meat and potatoes of the game is underwhelming at best. I feel that way about 95% of every newer game I play now. Cuphead was fucking refreshing.

I've been gaming since the 1970's and the last time I saw the industry this screwed up was the crash of the early 80's. That problem is that too many non-gamers are gaming. It's 'cool' to play video games now and everyone is playing. I see the type of people who NEVER would even LOOK at a game back in my teens playing games now. Models, celebrities, and the general public. It's sad and now companies are catering to the casual low hanging fruit. That's why gaming sucks now.

Just think of all the amazing new IP's just last gen. Dead Space, Mass Effect, The Darkness, Uncharted, Resistance, Gears Of War, Bioshock, F.E.A.R., Infamous, Bulletstorm, Borderlands, and so many more. Also it's worth noting that games like Fallout 3 and Call of Duty 4 MW, had numbers after them yes, but for many console gamers they were the first ones they played and they were genre defining. So for all intents and purposes they were like new IP's

I haven't been excited about a game since GTA 5. 6th and 7th gen had so me so hyped for gaming. Lack of enthusiasm has me not even buy games at launch anymore. Most of the games I've liked on the ps4 were remasters I didn't get a chance to play last gen. Rest of the games leave me lukewarm

Some next-gen games from the past couple of years that are actually quite good Breath of the Wild, DooM, Cuphead, Witcher 3, Nier: Automata, (first half of) MGS V, etc. Games have become this compartmentalized hobby, since there are so many coming out each year, that gives everyone the choice to play what they want. Unfortunately, that comes with the respective AAA bubble that keeps getting bigger and bigger, causing anti-consumer practices to arise for genuinely decent games. That and underdeveloped sequels getting rushed out the door is probably the main reason why most hardcore game players have left the highest-budget games market, and settled for more challenging, compelling AA or indie games.
shadow of the colossus remake was my first time playing that ps2 era game and that actually made me sit back and say wow, other than that nothing really excites me like ps1, ps2 era
I reckon the closest to the 'Bioshock/Mass effect" of this generation would be the Witcher 3, I recommend checking out XCOM 2 especially since the expansion is out.
TW3 is another all spectacle, low substance game. Everything it does has been done before and the combat is terrible. It basically has the best presentation of any game so far this gen (on PC anyway), but it's a chore to play. I only finished it for the narrative and characters. The best games for "gameplay" this gen so far have been Nioh, Hollow Knight, Bloodborne, Divinity: OS2 (and it has a lot of issues) and Mario Odyssey. This...entire...gen. The rest are just all graphics (especially Horizon Zero Dawn) or more Ubisoft by-the-numbers. I *am* an older gamer. Been playing since I was four years old when we had one of the original Pong consoles, and I've played on every new console generation since then. Last gen was actually the start of the downfall of rewarding gameplay experiences thanks to the mainstreaming of video games that started with the launch of the 360. Last gen did give us some of the best new series (Arkham, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Souls), but those were the exceptions to the rule. In fact, I was ready to give up on console games until Mass Effect arrived on PC and then later Demon's Souls. Shadow of Mordor was really bad too. It basically tried mashing Assassin's Creed together with the Arkham games, but the execution was just really off. Especially with the Nemesis system. It only worked if you were bad at a piss easy game that you could beat simply mashing two keys repeatedly (seriously, there are videos of this). I can't really take you seriously though when you start talking about how amazing the Assassin's Creed games are. They aren't. They were the epitome of "follow the marker, hold up and press X to win" throughout the entire game. AC2 was only remembered because Ezio was the best character of the franchise, not because the gameplay was anything to remember. Plus, saying "all of the other Resident Evils were pretty shit"...LOL. Get out of here. You were simply too young to have played them when the series was new and are basing them off of how they look or control now compared to everything that came after. RE4 is still considered one of the best games of all time too. Being in your early 20s doesn't make you "old".

Instead of giving us "challenges we can do" developers have gotten lazy they think a challenge is making the enemy harder to kill and easier for the player to be killed and that's not a challenge that's a pain in the ass, they also seem to dumb everything down so the little nooblets don't get scared and run off because the game is "too hard", i'll admit i used to be this way but i did this thing that's almost forbidden nowadays called "growing up". take shooters for example why in 2017 am i still limited to the number of attachments i can have on my gun? why are all open world games so empty why can't game developers come up with new things for gamers to do? why has the hobby of gaming become to lame and boring? on second thought why is everything in general so damn boring!?
Game difficulty is always ambiguous. Games back in the day were designed hard to make up for the fact they were really short. In the words of Lisa Simpsons 'A challenge I can do' is how I respond to game difficulty. The issue with your limitation point is how games are tied online now, so they have to even start balancing the singleplayer components, NBA 2K is a great example of that.
Battlefield had bf4 if you count that. That’s the only game that really captured me this gen. Witcher 3, the crew games and gta v is the only thing else that comes to mind. Most of these games weren’t true current gen games. They were also on ps3 and 360

Hey man I'm a longtime subscriber(since black ops days) haven't really watched in a while due to the fact I gave up games since the Xbox one gen. I00 percent agree w u. But I think the problem is there's no passionate game developers and lets face it if you're a passionate gamer your most likely not very productive. We gamers do a great job complaining about our games but dont join the developers and make great games ourselves. Have you ever considered making a game yourself? Or proposing game ideas?
And another thing is the gaming community doesnt really give any credit to the people that make the games. For example ken levine (bioshock creator) is the only guy really that gets credit but the assassins creed creator doesnt at all. I feel like gamers should start praising individual developers rather then just talk about the companies and how shitty they are. Yeah, PC is really the only platform I play MP on, even that is rare like yourself. Good example is MW remastered, my mates and I all talked it up and everyone was keen to play it but it lasted a few hours if that and haven't touched it since. I'm still hoping it's not just us getting old and that games are getting boring but maybe it is.
Do it, my nigga. You've got to really put the effort in to being sneaky to get the most out of it. Start to finish took me over 100 hours. Don't expect much from the story but the core gameplay of it is pure bliss once you figure out how it all works and can start to play around with the AI systems.
Ive been feeling the same way man. All ive been playing is older games on the pc (roms n shit) n I feel like I wasted money on my ps4 because nothing intresests me, nothing new anymore. All i played was the last of us n fallout 4 but I was disappointed with Fallout 4, all im waiting for is Red Dead and thats it. I play more pc games now cause smaller companies or more like independent people create okay games you know, there own thing.
I'd say that games have always been about making the most money possible. However, look at how good Mass Effect, CoD, Bioshock and GTA are/were and look how many millions and billions they made. The consumer responds very well to games of high quality.

All you play is american and western game's for 8 years there's your answer. Play games like yakuza, devil may cry 4 remastered, Gravity rush, Final fantasy, Persona 5, street fighter 5, king of fighters 14, and Nier automata maybe games from Japan aren't your cup of tea but all of them are great and better than modern games america make thats for sure.

Now I spend 2-3 hours per week on PS4 and any decent game will do it and will be fun. Took me till now to finish one season in NBA2k17. Azurik rise of perathia was a psychedelic trip for me whem i was a teen. That game was pure adventure.

I reckon the closest to the 'Bioshock/Mass effect" of this generation would be the Witcher 3, I recommend checking out XCOM 2 especially since the expansion is out.

TW3 is another all spectacle, low substance game. Everything it does has been done before and the combat is terrible. It basically has the best presentation of any game so far this gen (on PC anyway), but it's a chore to play. I only finished it for the narrative and characters. The best games for "gameplay" this gen so far have been Nioh, Hollow Knight, Bloodborne, Divinity: OS2 (and it has a lot of issues) and Mario Odyssey. This...entire...gen. The rest are just all graphics (especially Horizon Zero Dawn) or more Ubisoft by-the-numbers.
I *am* an older gamer. Been playing since I was four years old when we had one of the original Pong consoles, and I've played on every new console generation since then. Last gen was actually the start of the downfall of rewarding gameplay experiences thanks to the mainstreaming of video games that started with the launch of the 360. Last gen did give us some of the best new series (Arkham, Mass Effect, Dead Space, Souls), but those were the exceptions to the rule. In fact, I was ready to give up on console games until Mass Effect arrived on PC and then later Demon's Souls.
Shadow of Mordor was really bad too. It basically tried mashing Assassin's Creed together with the Arkham games, but the execution was just really off. Especially with the Nemesis system. It only worked if you were bad at a piss easy game that you could beat simply mashing two keys repeatedly (seriously, there are videos of this). I can't really take you seriously though when you start talking about how amazing the Assassin's Creed games are. They aren't. They were the epitome of "follow the marker, hold up and press X to win" throughout the entire game. AC2 was only remembered because Ezio was the best character of the franchise, not because the gameplay was anything to remember.
Plus, saying "all of the other Resident Evils were pretty shit"...LOL. Get out of here. You were simply too young to have played them when the series was new and are basing them off of how they look or control now compared to everything that came after. RE4 is still considered one of the best games of all time too. Being in your early 20s doesn't make you "old".

I agree, video games are way to basic for guys our age, you might say video games have been safe zoned. Instead of giving us "challenges we can do" developers have gotten lazy they think a challenge is making the enemy harder to kill and easier for the player to be killed and that's not a challenge that's a pain in the ass, they also seem to dumb everything down so the little nooblets don't get scared and run off because the game is "too hard", i'll admit i used to be this way but i did this thing that's almost forbidden nowadays called "growing up". take shooters for example why in 2017 am i still limited to the number of attachments i can have on my gun? why are all open world games so empty why can't game developers come up with new things for gamers to do? why has the hobby of gaming become to lame and boring? on second thought why is everything in general so damn boring!?
Game difficulty is always ambiguous. Games back in the day were designed hard to make up for the fact they were really short. In the words of Lisa Simpsons 'A challenge I can do' is how I respond to game difficulty. The issue with your limitation point is how games are tied online now, so they have to even start balancing the singleplayer components, NBA 2K is a great example of that.
Battlefield had bf4 if you count that. That’s the only game that really captured me this gen. Witcher 3, the crew games and gta v is the only thing else that comes to mind. Most of these games weren’t true current gen games. They were also on ps3 and 360

Everything, except actually playing. tried for like a year to play never went well so I gave up. now i just smoke crack to pass the time. Nah but srs though unfortunately
Persona 5 was truly a gem and Nier Automata was one of the most unique games ever released. Japan have old school philosophies on the games they make.

The only game I'm excited about it's a remake Resident Evil 2 if it's anything like the original just updated Graphics I'll be happy. It's hard to get excited about games nowadays because after a couple days you beat them and then they want to sell you DLC after you just spent sixty bucks on their game it's clear that's where the industry's focus is at constantly getting more and more money out of you and fragment the experience and the game at the same time to do it. Seems Bethesda is the only one making decent games nowadays that actually last.

Hey man I'm a longtime subscriber(since black ops days) haven't really watched in a while due to the fact I gave up games since the Xbox one gen. I00 percent agree w u. But I think the problem is there's no passionate game developers and lets face it if you're a passionate gamer your most likely not very productive. We gamers do a great job complaining about our games but dont join the developers and make great games ourselves. Have you ever considered making a game yourself? Or proposing game ideas?
And another thing is the gaming community doesnt really give any credit to the people that make the games. For example ken levine (bioshock creator) is the only guy really that gets credit but the assassins creed creator doesnt at all. I feel like gamers should start praising individual developers rather then just talk about the companies and how shitty they are. I'm not a game developer but wish I did because I could make a game so much better then the scrap out now
And yes part of it is being old. Like when I was a teen, mafia 2 and gta driving around and doing some mundane things was fun because I hadnt experienced living alone and driving but now theres some experiences that are boring in games like driving because as adults we do that now

camerongb I think all the innovation is on PC, but like 90% of it is done by indie devs that can't put together a solid product from a technical standpoint. PUBG is a great example of interesting innovation completely fucked by technical constraints imposed only by incompetence.

Good example is MW remastered, my mates and I all talked it up and everyone was keen to play it but it lasted a few hours if that and haven't touched it since.

Do it, my nigga. You've got to really put the effort in to being sneaky to get the most out of it. Start to finish took me over 100 hours. Don't expect much from the story but the core gameplay of it is pure bliss once you figure out how it all works and can start to play around with the AI systems.
Ive been feeling the same way man. All ive been playing is older games on the pc (roms n shit) n I feel like I wasted money on my ps4 because nothing intresests me, nothing new anymore. All i played was the last of us n fallout 4 but I was disappointed with Fallout 4, all im waiting for is Red Dead and thats it. I play more pc games now cause smaller companies or more like independent people create okay games you know, there own thing.

I'd say that games have always been about making the most money possible. However, look at how good Mass Effect, CoD, Bioshock and GTA are/were and look how many millions and billions they made. The consumer responds very well to games of high quality.

As for the best generation. That has to be ps1, ps2, n64, GameCube and original xbox. There still hasn’t been a better shooter than Max Payne 1 for PC and the original Xbox. You say there's nothing new and exciting but praise Bioshock which is a dumbed down version of System Shock 2. Same thing for Fallout, it's an old PC franchise. Now I spend 2-3 hours per week on PS4 and any decent game will do it and will be fun. Took me till now to finish one season in NBA2k17. I know some of you finished 10+ by December and no surprise everyrhing becomes boring.
