@@ShogunPlasmaYeah maybe Druid? For some reason despite being one of my personal favorites and one of the three most powerful classes in the game, alongside Cleric and Wizard, they were never popular in 5.14E.

I've had levels in Monk in more than half the characters I've played in 2014 5e. Somehow my DM never seemed to think it was weak. Heck I play it even more than Warlock, and I thought THAT was my favorite class.

Didn't even go over the grapple changes for monks, or some of the other fun changes. As a monk lover it's definitely in a great place now. Oh, also the martial hit dice scaling faster and harder is amazing. Seriously though the way of the elements 2024 monk subclass is sick. Alongside the grapple stuff you can at later levels grab someone from 15 feet away then fly up potentially 100 - 200 feet into the air then drop them.
I still think it's rough that we lost Tongue of the Sun and Moon, as well as the Poison/Disease immunity. And i don't like how the level 17 feature of the Open Hand Monk was nerfed so hard. At least make it 10d20 on a fail and hald on a save. But all the other changes are amazing!
"Immunity to disease" didn't really mean anything mechanically, so that's whatever. Very few monster abilities, and a single spell, referenced disease at all. So unless your DM made a point to homebrew disease, it doesn't mean anything. As for poison immunity, sure that one might sting a little. But the ability to shrug off the poisoned and exhaustion added to the renamed purity of body, and their ki/focus features actually scaling at this level instead. We also get the ability to deflect poison damage later, which is funny to imagine narratively. Lol As for tongue of the sun and moon. I'll take deflect energy everyday over what is essentially just the 3rd level tongues spell (which literally every full caster has access to at 5th level) masquerading as a 13th level feature. It was a flavor ribbon more than anything. As for quiverig palm, it no longer eats your entire action (and your flurry of blows is no longer hard linked to your attack action either). So you have a lot more ability to utilize it in combat without tanking your action economy. Even half damage starts to look good when you can still take your second attack and flurry of blows on the same turn. In fact, you can set up quivering palm with one unarmed strike, activate it with your second attack, and then set it set yourself up for another one next round with a flurry of blows hit, if you just wanted to nova damage to the extreme. Basically they made it easy as hell to spam. So the reduced damage when they succeed (which is the likely case, given it's a con save in tier 4) also comes with 4 attacks and set-up for next round. You basically recoup the lost damage and more by being able to attack on the same turn.
Considering from a Wizard Main here. The fact that I want to burn my spell book and dropkick someone using the 2024 monk, has something going good for it. I never was more excited to play Monk before now, I could live out my street fighter dreams in dnd.
not to mention that depending upon how that reaction attack is worded, it could happen near infinitely and since it is a combat action, adds a ton of bonuses.

I started playing monk as I had 0 DnD experience and a monk seemed fun. Now, a few years later I am HYPED about the 2024 changes and becoming a really annoying, yet unique fighter of my own instead of being that annoying mosquito that pops up right before you fall asleep
The Dungeon Master took the L in this one, literally. You call out specific changes to the names of abilities, like Deflect Missiles to Deflect Attacks, but refer to FLURRY of Blows as FURY of Blows. At least there wasn't any mention of Step of the Wind's improvement and the Tabaxi not being included in the PHB, cause there'd be a FURRY of Blows from the lack of Tabaxi Taxi Monk.
In the first campaign I played, one of my friends played a monk and he was the strongest melee fighter in our group. Monks can be very strong if played correctly.
At level 20 wizards get wish which they can turn to basically any spell. Or simply wish something away. But monks can't have an instant kill move that has a chance of failing. If it's pretty much a normal attack with extra damage if you hit it to this cost two focus points. On top of that how many times do you get to level 20 or 18 technically.
Honestly, the ability to deflect ANY kind of damage should come at level 7, not 13. At level 13, you're having high-level spells thrown at you all the time that the deflect attacks would have almost no chance of reducing to 0. At least at level 7 you'll have SOME magic missiles thrown at you that you can Jedi to another target.
So far I think only the 2014 Cleric's managed to put up a good fight aaginst their 2024 version. Very interesting, honestly, but I do hope we get a second.

they got rid of timeless body moved perfect self up off of lvl20 removed empty body (which was usefull in its own way) and 24 gave lvl 20 a stat stick. and not gaining all spoken languages at was definitely a shit nerf. seems all classes get a epic boon lvl 19 in 24. so id say the changes were hit am miss but overall a improvement.
while cloak of shadows sounds awesome, isn't an auto-counter that happens once per action taken by the opponent kind of ridiculous? This also triggers ANY on damage, on attack or on combat features that you have in place. Since it is a reaction as well, this means that the monk could auto-attack any target within range that commits any action(or depending upon wording, any target in range in general)...even an ally if for some stupid reason you want to say hit them hard enough to dispel something or knock them a short distance away?
It's a bit limiting to roleplay though. Not every monk is the same type. Not all are inspired by Asian warrior monks and philosophies. Ki as a term is just too anchored in one culture.
'24 Monk knows how to spin every nerf into a positive, and all '14 Monk can do in response is flip him off. I can tell who put more points into Charisma. 😅 Prepare to get smote.

Sounds like the 2024 monk got homebrewed
ngl monk is my favorite class and i can see some good with the "new" edition but the nerfs to open hand were not really needed. but 2024 not starting with a d4 martial die is very nice
they got rid of timeless body moved perfect self up off of lvl20 removed empty body (which was usefull in its own way) and 24 gave lvl 20 a stat stick. and not gaining all spoken languages at was definitely a shit nerf. seems all classes get a epic boon lvl 19 in 24. so id say the changes were hit am miss but overall a improvement.
Duke, honey? Flurry. Not Fury 💜
2014 Monk never stood a chance.
Can't buy your dice, the D4 is faulty. The number go at the base not the top.
2024 also does more damage with unarmed attacks
Oh no, Paladins...
Those 2014 pits tho
Can't wait for the paladins!
while cloak of shadows sounds awesome, isn't an auto-counter that happens once per action taken by the opponent kind of ridiculous? This also triggers ANY on damage, on attack or on combat features that you have in place. Since it is a reaction as well, this means that the monk could auto-attack any target within range that commits any action(or depending upon wording, any target in range in general)...even an ally if for some stupid reason you want to say hit them hard enough to dispel something or knock them a short distance away?
I definitely prefer calling them ki to focus points.
It's a bit limiting to roleplay though. Not every monk is the same type. Not all are inspired by Asian warrior monks and philosophies. Ki as a term is just too anchored in one culture.
I am playing a Mercy monk and really like it but losing Tongue of Sun and Moon sucks. Why are they taking all utilities away?
Paladins... prepare for some burining stakes.
'24 Monk knows how to spin every nerf into a positive, and all '14 Monk can do in response is flip him off. I can tell who put more points into Charisma. 😅
Prepare to get smote.
It would be hilarious if it turns out that fighter was the most civilised class😂😂😂
