Josh Pate took some time on Late Kick Live Ep 389 to discuss the latest mood out of Athens and how some out there still find ways to doubt the Bulldogs. Josh also weighs in on the debate about Sanford Stadium and whether it has elevated to a top 5 atmosphere in the SEC. Both years, Georgia would have lost to sooo many previous top teams. They would have been stomped by 2019 LSU, 2014 OSU, Clemson with Lawrence, 2004 USC, etc. so it isn’t that they don’t deserve it, it’s just that when you watch them, other than some occasional defensive plays, they lack so much wow factor

    The loudest and craziest I have ever seen Sanford Stadium was probably 2013 vs LSU, Murray vs Mett. The Auburn blackout game in 2007 was similiar, as was the Notre Dame game a few years back, and the Tenn game last year. The reason Sanford Stadium is not always crazy loud like that is that the home game schedule is boring. With Florida in Jacksonville, and Tenn sucking for the last few decades, you only have Auburn to hate on, and Georgia has beaten them with regularity over the last 18 years. It's hard to get up for Missouri, Vandy, Kentucky, et al. All of that is about to change, thank God.

  • @briandavis4580
    @briandavis4580 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I graduated from UGA and have attended many games at Sanford Stadium as a regular fan. I have also worked plenty of games at the stadium with a second job. From my experience, Sanford has definitely gotten louder in recent seasons. The atmosphere was electric for games against Tennessee (2022), Arkansas (2021), Notre Dame (2019), etc. It is definitely a more hostile environment than during the Mark Richt era (though that 2013 Georgia-LSU game certainly got loud).
    When people say Sanford Stadium isn't loud, I assume they haven't been to a game since the Richt era, and/or they attended a game against a mediocre opponent. There were times during the Richt years when I heard older fans tell teenagers or young adults (non-students) to sit down or stop yelling so much. Plenty of fans were fairly quiet, even in seats relatively close to the hedges.
    Sanford isn't going to get deafening for a noon kickoff against a mediocre opponent, but it's a tough place to play. If Walker had been there for a big game recently, he wouldn't have said that. It was deafening at times against Tennessee, and that's impressive when you consider that Sanford Stadium isn't the kind of stadium that traps the noise with the bridge in the west side of the stadium.
    Kirby Smart has definitely motivated many of the fans and quite honestly, I think it's a lot easier for Georgia fans to be motivated to be loud when the team is actually a championship contender. I've never once barked at an opposing fan though lol. I try to be welcoming to opposing fans unless they are rude to me first. My friends and I had largely positive experiences with Notre Dame fans in 2019 and Oregon fans at the Benz.

      I am a big time Georgia fan - and I have a lot of confidence in them this year. The ONE thing that scares me is their schedule towards the end. There is a "trap" that could cost them the playoffs. That "trap" is Tennessee. I am not saying Tennessee is like Alabama - but what IF at the time they play Georgia - they only have 1 loss on their record. If they beat Georgia - then they would go to the SEC Championship - which would be tough for Georgia to make the playoff if they do not win the East and with their weak schedule. It will be an interesting season for the DAWGS - but their schedule - even though weak - is very tricky. lol I personally think they will beat Tennessee - but any great team can have a slip up or lose by a field goal.

    • @briandavis4580
      @briandavis4580 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@melvinh007 You make some good points. You never want to lose to a team in your own division, especially if they are a solid team that could potentially win the tiebreaker. I think UGA will beat the Vols again, but it's no lock. Knoxville can be a tough place to play when the Vols have a solid team.
      I'd like to see a tougher regular season schedule so the team will be battle tested, but we can't control that. Ole Miss could potentially be a trap game if some of the guys are looking ahead to the trip to Knoxville. You never know how new starters will handle adversity so let's hope the team doesn't forget that humility is only a week away. Having guys like Sedrick Van Pran return was big for the locker room IMO.

    Mark Richt era Sanford Stadium catered to the middle aged donors and season ticket holders with music selection and general atmosphere. Kirby realized, as did many other fans in attendance that the focus should be on the players, students and most importantly recruits. Now the stadium doesn’t play your dad and grand dad’s music and it’s much more entertaining. Unfortunately, with the East, Auburn, and GT so poorly down as of late, and out of conference games played in Atlanta, decent games are few and far between - hopefully the new playoff scheduling will help. (Also Florida being played on campus would help, but I know that’s a touchy subject with traditionals.)

  • @briandavis4580
    @briandavis4580 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You're right that some things happening in the sport (NIL, realignment, etc.) took some attention away from Georgia's recent national championships. This likely played a role in fans feeling the program was disrespected. That being said, I don't care if some folks downplay what Georgia has done or express doubt that the Dawgs can keep playing at an elite level. I've never been more confident and laid back as a Georgia fan.
    A certain percentage of pretty much every fan base believes "nobody believes in us" or that "the media don't believe in us" because they largely remember the negative comments while forgetting the positive comments and predictions (this is evident if you look at message boards). For all the whining about people on College Gameday picking Tennessee to beat us, the large majority of national sport types picked us to win that game.
    That included some that had gushed over the Vols' offense in the days or weeks going into that game. Late Kick shows us lots of love, JD Pickell has said plenty of good things about UGA, and plenty of "talking heads" have praised Georgia. The homers don't seem to remember the positive comments, and act as if "the media" is some homogenous group of folks who come together to routinely praise or bash certain programs.
    Moreover, it is largely fans of our rivals that jump through hoops to downplay Georgia's recent run. People expecting fans of their rivals in general to praise them are going to be disappointed. Our fans often did the same things when other SEC programs or Clemson won big. When your favorite team wins, then as you said, you can "say sorry, not sorry" when they whine and continue to enjoy the championships/bragging rights. Nationally, many fans and sports writers have good things to say about the Dawgs.
    It's also not disrespectful for people to have some questions about Georgia's ability to replace Stetson Bennett and offensive coordinator Todd Monken. No one besides the serious homers expects Georgia to take a huge step back, but it's understandable that some might think we won't be quite as good next season. It's also true our 2023 schedule is soft, and I wish the SEC hadn't made us (and Tennessee) cancel upcoming games against OU. I would love to see a 3-6-6 format in the conference. Go Dawgs!

      Missed 50 yard FG by a guy who had never made a 50 yard FG was not luck. It would have been luck had it gone in. Neither was the scoop and score vs LSU. Watch that play - Ringo played that ball perfectly to get that scoop and score - he created it.

    I was at both the games against Arkansas in 2021 and against Tennessee in 2022 (among many others as well), and you are spot on, Josh. Now, let's see if Georgia fans can avoid the attendance and energy complacency that plagued the Alabama fan base in the regular season, once the Tide established that a meaningful post season was a given for that program.

      @@jeremyg8568 there are a lot of assumptions there. You're assuming the injured player will play exactly like he played up to that point but as we've seen many times a player has an amazing first half then goes cold. Either way an injury is just an excuse for the losing team.

    So, as we know it, two things can be true at the same time Georgia deserves every championship that they have gotten Georgia is the new pretty girl that’s in the room but the irony of it is she’s always been in the room. You just didn’t know it. a team like Alabama they’ve always been the standard. Alabama is like America’s team because of the history and the tradition and the fact that they have a coach that is literally continuously rewriting history so until Nick Saban retires I don’t see Georgia becoming the standard. Nick has to retire then Kirby can take that rain, but as long as Nick Saban is at Alabama Kirby will always take a backseat, no matter how many chips he wins. And what’s crazy about that is it’s really not a bad thing because for about nine seasons, Kirby Smart was a part of the Alabama standard anyway.
