Kobe Bryant greatest games: 46pts at MSG vs Knicks (2003)

  • (2003) "Showdown at MSG"
    This is the 1st of Kobe's 9 straight games with at least 40pts. In the most famous arena, Kobe put on a show with 40pts in 3 quarters. After watching his team blowing a 34pt lead from the bench, Kobe returned to the action late in the 4th to seal the victory. Kobe was really unstoppable in the 3rd quarter, making 9 of 13 shots while dazzling the MSG crowd. And he made that sick baseline reverse jam over Sprewell in this game too. Just vintage Kobe.

    There is a strong case to be made that this was his BEST performance at the Mecca. He sat a lot of the 4th after scoring 22 in the 3rd. Had he come on in the forth around his normal min he would of gone over 61.

    Kobe crucifying one of the top defense shooting guards of his era in Sprewell! This is the game where I gave him the crown. Shaq was a 10 year veteran and couldn't stay in shape but Kobe was in his prime and had confidence in his offsensive game not seen since Jordan in terms of his ability to make plays. This version of Kobe would shit on any NBA player today including Lebron, KD, Melo, Thompson, Harden,etc...he just had to many moves and he was so quick at this point combined with his elite athleticism was quite frankly the closet u will ever see to MJ. To be quite honest Kobe can be argued to be the second greatest player ever.He got it done on both sides of the ball for over 10 years as a first team all-NBA defenders and starter. Only Jordan has done that. Lebron will but Kobe also has five rings and an 81point game to go with over 30k points and 6k dimes over an almost 20 year career.

    @ybaby1990 That's a fair enough assessment, I'd say. The only thing you can really take from those stats is 1) When Jordan shoots more, his teams generally do better than Kobe's and 2) When Jordan scores more points, he generally does so with a higher FG% than when Kobe scores more. How you want to generalize that is up to you. Being an old-school guy, I tend to notice that a lot of modern guards simply aren't as efficient as many older guards.Kobe, Iverson,T-mac, etc, shoot poorly in comparison

    @WEZxxxxZYDxxx91 OK, so you got the lineup wrong too: The 81-point game had the following cast:
    Starting: Kwame Brown,Lamar Odom, Chris Mihm, Smush Parker, + Bryant
    Bench: Devean George, Sasha Vujacic, Luke Walton, Brian Cook, Devin Green, Von Wafer, Andrew Bynum
    FYI, Lamar, Bynum, and Walton are still on the Lakers, and I think Sasha was still there for a few. Kwame's in Charlotte, George is on the Warriors, Cook is on the Clippers.
    LA, as a team, took 88 shots that game. Kobe took 46.

  • @TontoNo5
    @TontoNo5 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @vincesaidyoo : well, Kobe had 81 with 6 boards, 2 assists, and 3 steals
    Jordan had 69 points, 18 boards, 6 assists, and 4 steals.
    Kobe had his high versus a hapless Raptors team.
    Jordan got his against a Cavs team that was one of the best in the league.
    I don't know why you think scoring a lot of points, and that alone, makes Kobe a better player.

    @WEZxxxxZYDxxx91 You forget that the 'Weak East' was during Kobe's championships, not Jordan's. The East was a very strong conference, with the Bad Boy Pistons, Bird's Celtics, the Ewing Knicks, etc. The West was good back then too, and Jordan kept winning 'chips when the West started to bloom. He beat Magic, Drexler, Barkley, Payton/Kemp, and Stock/Malone.
    Kobe's first 3 titles came 1) With a Shaq putting up Wilt numbers and 2) against weak East contenders like the Pacers, Sixers, and Nets.

    I never said scoring 81 points wasn't impressive. I said it's 'inflated' by Kobe still shooting with just a few minutes left, and LA up 15. You sit your starters in those situations. In basketball, anyhow.

      I agree forsure ... I still think shaq was the best player in the league that year but he was outta shape and clearly wasn't 00 or 01 shaq .... people forget that kobe had to share the ball with the most dominant inside force of the modern era... in 2000 and 2001 and 2002 shaq was fucking putting up like 38-18 and 5 at 64 percent in the finals lol nobody wad gonna win the finals mvp but Shaq period ..... I love kobe but i.still think he cost them the title in 03 and 04 by not truly playing thru shaq like he did in 00-01-02 .... by 03 kobe had wanted to.be the alpha but Shaq was still the most unstoppable force... I wish kobe wouldve swallowed his pride and they would've won 5 in a row ..... the spurs had no buisness beating them in 03 and neither did the pistons in 04 but kobe tried to do way to much honestly .... kobe didn't become the best player on the planet until 05-2011 .... when u have the luxury of playing with a force like prime shaq u gotta take advantage... I also do believe that kobe got pissed cause shaq wasn't putting the work in like kobe did.... shaq could've been a 40 points a game and 20 boards easily if he had the work ethic ...... it's funny some dumbass fans truly think Duncan was better thsn shaq lol ... he had a longer career I give ya that..but shaq even in his rookie.year was a 24 and 15 guy then up until 2000 he was always 28 and 14 ..... but in 2000 when he put the extra weight and muscle on nobody could deal with him period ... we may never see another finals performance like shaqs 00 one 38-19-5 at 64 percent is wilt Chamberlain like . But shaq was facing true competition in rick Smith's who was 7 foot and a good player ... I truly believe the 01 lakers could be the best team of all-time. U got Kobe the closest thing to Jordan then u.got prime.shaq which there is no anwswr for him ... man i miss the early 2000s:(

    People today want to compare the younger players today with the OLD Kobe. Of course Lebron, Wade, Rose and Durant have the advantage today. But none of those young bucks have a chance against a young Kobe. Kobe's great talents were just overshadowed/overlooked at the time because of the post-Jordan hangover, Shaq's ego, and Kobe's stubborn attitude.

    @ybaby1990 Well, both Jordan and Both were on some pretty terrible teams, at some point. If I listed the rosters of some of those old Bulls teams, you wouldn't recognize one name. Jordan's bad teams never missed the playoffs, and Kobe's bad teams missed one. And like I said, the stats are pretty simple - when shooting a lot of shots (ie, 30 or more), Kobe's teams have a bad losing percentage. Jordan's have a + pct. Jordan, when shooting lots , tended to have a full box score, even on bad teams.

    @ybaby1990 I've been watching the NBA since 1985, and I've seen both MJ and Kobe shoot their teams out of games. Kobe does it more often. You're right, you can't win 1-vs-5, which is why it's kinda fruitless to try to play that way. And it's not ridiculous to say that Kobe's teams did worse when he takes more shots than Jordan's teams did.. that's what the records say! Take 50-point games - there have been, in history, 13 50-point games with under 50% shooting, and Kobe Bryant has 6 of them.

    @ybaby1990 You are right, shooting more shots doesn't necessarily mean hogging the ball. However, shooting a lot *can* also mean hogging the ball, too. I mean, a player can have a lot of assists while shooting a lot, if he's that type of player; Kobe tends to have less assists the more he shoots, if you check the stats. Also, the more he shoots, the less his shooting percentage is, which kinda makes you consider he's more efficient when he shoots less. I don't think there's another conclusion.

    @EhiTPT Hmm... actually, if you're counting total points ever scored, the greatest scorer of all time is Kareem.
    If you're talking how many points a player averages per game, then it's Jordan, and Wilt close behind.
    If you're talking the most points scored in one single game, that's Wilt with 100. If you're talking the number of points in a single season, that's still Wilt. If you're talking total playoff points, or average, that's Jordan.
    So.. why is Kobe the greatest scorer again?

  • @TontoNo5
    @TontoNo5 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @ybaby1990 - You're missing the point completely. A previous poster brought up the fact that, when comparing MJ and KOBE's big scoring games, Jordan lost 2 of his 60+ point games. That's true, and you can't win 'em all.
    And you're right, Kobe and MJ have had to carry the scoring burden for each of their respective 'bad' teams. However, when you're shooting more, it should be to help your team win, right? So when shooting more, Jordan's teams have done better: Jordan: .558 Kobe: .386.

    @WEZxxxxZYDxxx91 I've said over and over that 81 in a game is impressive nomatter how you weight it. If you want to weigh it more objectively in terms of an overall performance, or in the context of the Lakers development that season, or in the context of the season it was done in (11 players, mostly shooters, averages over 24 ppg that year, and 3 players averaged well over 30), or in any context that might send some objective criticism, then you say it's hating. It's not, it's just reality.

    @WEZxxxxZYDxxx91 Yes, it is tough to judge a game by just highlights or the box score, which is why I watched the game. I'm just not a huge Bryant homer, so I was watching a little more objectively, and noticed the rest of the game, too, not just Kobe shooting the ball. It just struck me as more of a Pete Maravick / Harlem Globetrotter kind of exhibition than an actual basketball game after a while.

    @WEZxxxxZYDxxx91 Well, the fans were caught up, the players were kind of.. well, not caught up. The Lakers looked kinda of disheartened, which was weird for a team that just came back from 18 down. I don't believe Phil Jackson was caught up, he rarely is. This was the 'let Kobe get this out of his system' year for Phil, so it was more a matter of saying, "You want to stay in and keep shooting now that we're up 15 and the game's pretty much over, or do you want to sit and rest and avoid injury?"

    @TontoNo5 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @WEZxxxxZYDxxx91 It also kind of shows you how little any of those players developed during those years of Kobe-ball (That's a term Phil Jackson used, and in a way that meant ".. I hope we don't have to devolve to playing Kobe-ball again). Otherwise, you look at a guy like Steve Kerr, who was an unknown before the Bulls, and remained a key element for a Spurs championship team afterwards. Some people will say that Kerr was just more talented. I say Kerr developed at a player under MJ and Pip.

    @WEZxxxxZYDxxx91 I'm not saying Kobe's play didn't win the game for LA. It did. I'm saying his point total was inflated by keeping him in after the game was won. That dilutes the '81' when compared to other 'big' games.For 'big' games, I prefer Jordan's 69/18/7/4, or Robinson's Quadruple-double (34/ 10/ 10 /10) - or, in another meaningless, stat-padding game, Robinson's 71/14/5/2 : it meant as much as Kobe's. Ditto for David Thompson's 73/7/2, the game maybe most comparable to Kobe's

    Was that the season that Odom was quoted as saying something like, "I think God put us to here to watch Kobe Bryant play basketball", and he meant that literally - that the Lakers sometimes could do nothing but watch, because Kobe wasn't big on giving up the ball when he was shooting a lot. The Raptors looked depressed that game, but so did the other LA guys. LA was down 15, yes, and came back on Kobe's shoulders:but they were also up 15 when Kobe kept padding his stats.

    @mambaKB24mvp
    If Kobe's a better ball handler, why is his turnover rate so much poorer than Jordan's? If Kobe's a better shooter, why is his field goal percentage worse than Jordan's? If Kobe's better at hitting long-range shots with people in his face, and Jordan was better at getting clear and freeing himself up for better shots, why is that a plus for Kobe? Seriously, people confuse doing things flashier with doing them with more skill.

    Kobe is better than MJ. Skill wise. MJ just looked better when he did things. MJ can't shut you down, but is one of the best help defenders of all time. But Kobe can play you man to man, and D you up. I know everybody wants to throw stats and championships into but you can't and if you did then the greatest players of all time would be Russell and Chamberlain....greatest winner and the greatest stat stuffer..
