I am so happy to find two Catholics who are “the good guys” within my own church.

It is amazing how utterly unique we are. Oftentimes I wish I looked different, had a different personality, and different talents. I often believe there is a "right" way to be. I would love to be extremely conventionally beautiful, a millionaire, Ivy League-educated, charismatic, and outgoing. I have always thought a relationship with the Lord was for the weak. I will be honest I still do. I feel guilty for doubting the Lord's love and that He is in control. I have difficulty believing He cares what happens in my life or that anything will change. I believe only I can change myself - I know you will say that is pride. I honestly just doubt God will change anything or truly cares or that my life has a deeper meaning or purpose.

I find the times that God works most in me is when I sit, kneel in silence before Him. Letting everything go and letting Him in. It is not a quick fix, but a moment by moment, day by day, year by year journey. He is not impressed by how well we do but rather how much we offer up to Him as He can then be free to do what He desires in us. It takes dying to self, but the graces it bears are abundant. One step at a time.

This sounds wonderful. Of course it does. It is inspiring and comforting. But I cannot reconcile it with any substantive basis to believe it as objective truth. I was raised traditional Catholic. Served as an altar boy praying the Latin mass for around 10 years. Read Catholic theology, Aquinas, Sheed, and the Fathers of the Church as part of rigorous religious instruction. Then when I got older I studied comparative religions - and found other beautiful traditions and perspectives on our existence and place in the physical world. Then I went beyond that again to look at other perspectives. The learning journey is diverting but also difficult because one comes to notice that we cannot prove any of this - we don't have any evidence. Now I'm 42 with a family of my own and I don't go to Mass anymore because I cannot participate in something that I don't feel committed to in terms of belief - if I did it would just be for show and this repels me. Even still I have walked hundreds of times to a small grotto near our local Church where there is a shrine to Mary and I have sat there staring up at the statue and begging for some hint that any of the Catholic narrative is actually real - there is a comfort in being there but I attribute this to my childhood and the familiarly of Mary as a concept preached by Ignatius and others. Silence was all I ever observed. I read often about various traditions for example some believe reincarnation is the machinery of the universe. I marvel at how those members of my family who still adhere to the Catholic faith can dismiss these other perspectives with thinly veiled scorn as being without evidence when it seems to me their entire basis for belief is without evidence; there is a cognitive dissonance at play that is both baffling and I suspect intellectually disingenuous. It is nice to have a sense of certainty in faith - I remember having it once - and I wouldn't try to take that away from those who have it because given the choice I would probably choose to retain it myself. But having been on such a journey thus far I find myself incapable to getting back into that box and stand instead on the threshold of the cosmos unsure whether I am everything or nothing.

Christianity has a superhumanly large degree of intellectually defensible proofs though. Like in Daniel 2 (if I remember correctly) predicting the four successive empires that would indeed go on to happen, and saying that in the reign of the fourth, the Roman Empire a Messiah is born. It even intimates that the fourth empire will split into two, which indeed happened as Byzantium stood a thousand years longer than Rome. Even the most extreme of modernist scholars date Daniel to at the latest 150BC and it was found in, I forget, Nag Hammadi or Dead Sea Scrolls, right? So it can't be later than that. The truth is there if you want to look for it my dude.

My dear Robyn, you are much loved and God is calling you. Looking for God in knowledge is a start but when we go lower we find Him. Start by trying confession, let that be your start. Then I would go to adoration and just listen. Keep going back, and keep going back. Tell Jesus how you don’t believe ask him to show you. Don’t give up. He wants you and loves you. It is so worth it. At the risk of sounding crazy...
I'm a space cowboy called the Lone Ranger and I have taken command of a lightship. Like the Blues Brothers I'm on a mission from god.
My Mission Impossible is to engage the supernova function on my lightship in order to fill a giant black hole in space called ignorance (greed) with light (love)...so that it's darkness (misery, murder, mass shootings, suicides, war, etc.) goes away and it's heavy gravitational pull stops sucking the joy out of life.
Then life can become a celebration with joy spilling out of the smiles of everyone. Like Love (god) intended for life to be in the first place.
Love (god) spent billions of years creating this paradise planet lifeboat so that her miraculous works of fine art called life have a place place to "be".
Love didn't spend so much time creating this paradise planet lifeboat to be depreciated, hated, polluted and destroyed in a brief moment by alien vampires (greed) and thier ignorance (hate).
