Real Families: Insights into Parenthood After Loss

  • This episode meets two couples who can't stop having babies, asks why they can't stop, and follows the highs and lows of life in both super-sized families, including a family holiday for 16.
    Most people feel that their families are complete after they have had a couple of babies, some will try for a third and a small (but brave) minority may even go for a fourth or fifth. In this series, we will meet eight of the biggest families in the UK to find out what it is like to raise 10 or more children.
    The fights, the rewards, the love and the frustration that go hand in hand with having a family will be seen here, multiplied and laid bare. Is every sibling interaction a struggle for dominance and parental attention, or in the case of families is bigger really better?
    Family holidays, weddings, births, domestic life, and rights of passage are important events in the life of any family, but what are they like when you have more children than you can count on two hands?
    Real Families brings you stories of modern day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts.

      Bipolar And Me Its perfectly possible: older kids can join in with the younger kids for some lessons, and teach themselves for other lessons. I ought to know: my mum homeschooled us with an age range of 15 years 😂 And it hasn't done us any harm, either: my three elder brothers are now all at Cambridge University. 😊

    • @2ndhandSue
      @2ndhandSue 7 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      I have a friend who is homeschooling her 6 kids with a 15 year age spread. Whatever they are learning at the time, the lesson is the same for all the kids, just geared to their age. The oldest one would have to research and write an essay on how people live at the North Pole, for example, while the youngest one(s) would draw pictures of a North Pole home, or a resident fishing or something. I don't know how she manages it, but her kids pass the standard exams with good grades every year. They are very smart children, and much more inquisitive than traditionally schooled children.

      Good on her, but I feel like she is the exception, not the rule. I think you need to have a more specialised background to teach more advanced science etc.

      Bipolar And Me As someone who's been homeschooled her entire life, I would like to point out that most homeschoolers use school text books once they get to GCSE/Alevel levels. :) This means that the parents themselves don't have to know a lot about that particular subject. :)

    A lot of negative influence in schools? That Sulivain mother bothers me. I don't think the children are getting a proper education even the oldest said she's not qualified. I think their missing out a lot, seems like the mother isolated them a bit too much.

    • @MsDesignDiva
      @MsDesignDiva 7 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Agreed, the Sulivain family gives me the creeps, plus I feel so bad for the oldest, she basically has no space of her own (obvious from the first clip of them with a younger sibling taking a book she was reading and messing it up, there would be a smackdown if anyone took any of my books), which personally would drive me insane.

    • @gracechristopher7716
      @gracechristopher7716 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Kaitlin Hannah The brilliant thing about homeschooling is that you don't have to be a qualified teacher: my mum isn't, but she homeschooled all of us, and there are now three boys in Cambridge.

    • @2ndhandSue
      @2ndhandSue 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      By "not qualified", the daughter meant that her mother has not got a teaching degree from University. Neither has my friend who is homeschooling her 6 kids. You don't need to be a formalized teacher. You get all the materials you need from the School Board to teach your kids with. All the curriculum is laid out and the lessons are in the book, with suggested activities for kids of different ages in order to learn the material. The only time my friend brings in someone else is to help with high school math which she feels she isn't qualified to teach. Then they use tutors if they need to, to help one or more kids get through a section of Math or Science that they're having difficulty with. Also, homeschoolers are not usually alone. Most of them belong to homeschooling groups which meet regularly for field trips and activities so that the kids get social time with other kids, like traditionally schooled kids would do at recess time - get together and play. Within those groups of homeschooling parents, there are usually parents who are good at Math, or good at Music, or good at Science, who help each other out. While my friend gets Math teaching help from another parent in the group, she will take his children and work with them on projects or crafts because she's good at those things. All in all, homeschooled kids get a lot more one-on-one attention from different "teachers" with different skill sets than traditionally schooled kids get.

    • @stephanietaylor6154
      @stephanietaylor6154 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Kaitlin Hannah also school just isn't about learning. It's also about the kids learning social skills and other skills they can't learn at home.

      It doesn't matter that she doesn't have a teaching degree, she dropped out of college (British college is ages 16-18, so in American terms, she doesn't have a high school diploma). Surely someone who finished education at 16 is not qualified to teach a teenager! And high school teachers all have different specialities. My high school maths teacher wouldn't have been able to teach me history, so how can we expect a normal parent with no higher education to teach every subject to the standard of a high school teacher?

    Homeschooling if you're not a teacher probably isnt the best, and kids NEED the social interaction of other kids at school. Wanting to "protect" your kids from the influences at school is just going to make them more rebellious as adults. More power to the parents who homeschool but think about what it does to the kids too

      Everything contributes to global warming, many developed countries populations are starting to peak and decline, because many choose to have 1-2 so there is no growth. Families like this actually help to even the population rate. And in about 20-30 years countries like the US and U.K. Are going to be wanting more babies because we are gonna have too many elderly and not enough young to support and contribute to the work force

      People with one or two children do the same thing. They don't pay enough attention. You can't say she would pay more attention to less kids. Some parents of 1 or 2 only give their children 10 minutes of their time if not less. Some people with 3 or 4 kids could give their kids 20 minutes a day. It really depends on the person. The parent. How much time is given to yours? More time doesn't necessarily mean more love because an 8 year old might not want to spend an hour being entertained while a 3 year old might need your attention every 15min. It's their home as long as they aren't abused and as long as the parent feeds, clothes, and shows some affection/nurturing they'll be fine.

    It's each family's own decision how many to have, and neither of these families are receiving benefits or welfare at least. The one problem I have, though, is wondering how each child gets enough attention and one-on-one time with their parents. It's impossible with that many. Both those homes were like chaos all day long - the noise alone would do me in. Each new baby is thrust out of its position within a year - that's not enough time to devote to each newborn. And babies should not be an "addiction", with a mother having them just because she loves to be pregnant and "have" babies. One of these women admits she's been high risk since her third pregnancy and she's now on her 10th - that is taking risks at someone else's expense. Really - it's time to know when to stop. There will be grandchildren someday, so these women will get their fill of babies without having to produce more on their own.

    As someone who was homeschooled, I'd like to address all the comments saying that homeschooling is wrong. Homeschooling, as a general rule, usually turns out children who are as well, or better, educated than those from mainstream schools. In some places we are actually head-hunted by universities.
    That is not to say that every homeschooling family is perfect, and there are a few, a very few, who do not succeed. There are also children who do not succeed in mainstream schools.
    It is also true that documentaries and news coverage are usually heavily biased against homeschooling. There have been cases of documentaries deliberately selecting footage to make homeschooling families look bad and the children appear uneducated.
    It is impossible to tell which scenario is occurring here, I suspect the latter could be the case, but that is only from knowing other docos have done the same. However it is concerning that the mother refuses to give her children access to reproductive education, and that she is teaching them that contraception is wrong. Staunchly religious families do exist, and although they have a strong presence in homeschooling communities, homeschooling is not intrinsically linked with religion.
    Regardless, homeschooling is a viable and successful course for many families, please don't lump us all in the same group

    • @al-bi7by
      @al-bi7by 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I worked with a woman who homeschooled her four girls. The woman in question wasn't educated beyond high school herself but she looked into anything and everything for her children. Sometimes they learned together, especially with languages. One of her daughters won an award for her writing from Princeton when she was 14. That is the school she is now attending. All 4 of those children have very impressive academic credentials. She took them to all sorts of places for field trips, organized volunteer work for the family on a regular basis, had a garden, cooked different ethnic foods and just anyting she could think of to enrich their lives. If only children in public schools had such an education.

      i don't think anyone is saying homeschooling in itself is wrong, just that that family seems to be doing it for the wrong reasons (to shelter them) and with that many kids, its probably not ideal because you have to cover the curriculum for a wide range. one person can't give that many kids the attention they need academically, across a range of subjects. also i think, if someone is going to homeschool, its important that they have clubs or meet ups so the kids can still be socialised.

      People can judge them if they want to, if a mother decides to continue having children even after she knows that she is high risk then she is not only risking her life but also her children’s. If the mother dies in birth then those children will be left alone and no one could take care of that many alone. Not only that but when you have 12+ children then you can’t give all of them enough love and attention. Go and have kids but people need to realize exactly what it does to the children and how it will affect them. They can have kids but there’s a difference between having 5 dogs and having 15. Is selfish to have so many children just because you want to and to not think about the actual children who you will have to raise
      For example the family who went on vacation seem to be more then able to care and give attention to all of their children, and I’ve seen other families that also do well but the one where the mom is paranoid and insufficiently homeschooling her children is wrong. That mom should put the needs of her children above her own

    As a teacher I find her words not a little offensive. When I was teaching I cared deeply about the children. Not just what they learnt but about about them as individuals with their own hopes and dreams and often difficulties as well
