Since in a crash, you want the energy to be absorbed by the car and not the crash test dummy. The one that breaks up the most (since Lego doesn't deform) would be absorbing the most energy and should therefore have the best rating. Great video and Lego engineering of the test track.

in the last one nothing really happened so i think that one did get its score well, the van did a bad job since the dummy flew across the back
Yeah but not always, some of them had large parts come off and hit the driver
I’m amazed how Lego designed all these cars to match their real counterparts so well, they even made the Mustang go sideways before it crashed

Funny enough, in the mid to late 1960s the first and second generation of the Ford Mustang, as well as most cars at the time, were actually built with solid steering columns, so being impaled in the event of a front on collision was a genuine issue/concern

The mustang actually did the same thing that older cars did in crashes before collapsable steering columns were invented
I love this video and was inspired by so many awesome ideas they are amazing!
NGL having built everyone of these the thumbnail really grabbed me. Given how structurally fickle some of these can be when handling most of these preformed astonishingly well not only remaining intact but busting up the test wall as well. Really good test track built but for more destruction longer means more speed. Have to wonder how either the 89 Batmobile or Ecto 1 would have preformed though both probably to large in size for the track set up.

Yea, the 89 is practically as big as the track itself and is less of a play set, and more of a display model. It has a lot of delicate elements all over it that make it difficult to even pick up. But it does have a really interesting zero-point steering system.
This design reminds me of how aircraft carriers launch jets. It's a very similar process.

Ironically irl, the ratings likely would’ve been flipped. Cars are made to collapse in the event of a crash so it absorbs the brunt of the energy. If the car was completely solid, most of the energy is going straight the the occupants of the car and… carnage ensues.
Yes and no. Modern frames are built with crumple zones, since if your A pillar collapses, the driver is fucked.

FYI engines don't just explode like that, at most it would catch on fire. To get an engine to explode like you seemed to describe, you would have to somehow manage to increase the pressure in the pistons (and without heavily modifying the engine, would be impossible by normal means)
Thank you. The tiny amount of fuel in an engine at any one time would not be able to detonate it like a bomb.

Correct. Only certain turbine engines actually explode, and even then only under very specific conditions.

You should try crashing cars designed by fans. Also, cars which break easily are probably the best cars, as it shows the car can absorb the impact forces.
You shouldn’t make the car too fragile though, as it will break the passenger cabin as well, thus injuring and killing our passengers and driver.

as i had expected, the cars with more technic in their frame generally did better
since technic pieces tend to have stronger bonds and are harder to break apart
...except from the point of view of the crash test dummy, thats not doing better.
The Porsche 911 Targa set also has the Turbo model as its 2 in 1 function. I have that one, and I knew that the Turbo/Targa would fare pretty well. A very good design. Also, good job on the crash wall build

I think the DB4 should've had 4 stars at least. Destruction was minimal and the dummy seemed intact. Must've been the reinforced chassis and armor plating.

The driver of the mustang getting impaled by the steering column is actually pretty realistic. That was a serious problem with old cars, and it led to the end of those fancy, experimental designs for cars. Ever wonder why modern cars don’t look as nice or as curvy as old ones? That’s mostly why.
@Vegas I do too, I love the way older cars looked, but that’s the reason why modern car designs are all boring and boxy. They had to include safety features and fix those issues
Modern cars also have collapsible steering columns so the steering wheel doesn't just crush the driver if the column gets bumped.
When he put all the bags of bricks on the table it reminded me of the old lego building youtube videos.

Back in the day, me and my sister used to crash test whatever cars came with our lego sets by rolling them off the top step and letting them tumble down the stairs. One of them we never managed to put back together. RIP Lego Friends taxi.

I remember as a kid I would crash Lego cars into each other and rebuild them for fun, it has gotten to a point where I would remember where to place parts in the right area in a matter of seconds. I stopped doing it not because of the constant re-building, but because I would lose some parts to the point where I couldn't connect other parts anymore XD

I still do that sometimes, modern phones and their high FPS cameras have also made it possible to watch it back in slow motion! I general send them flipping off ramps though, I should try something like this.

@@dshiznit12a I haven't had any issues with wheels breaking when crashing my cars, though I have starting having to remove clip based mirriors from a few cars as well as the bull bar from my police car (also held on by clips) as they broke quite easily if hit at the wrong angle. Only time I've experienced a LEGO wheel breaking (tecnically it was the axle that snapped) was when I child pushed down on the car way too hard. Maybe a large, very heavy LEGO car could break an axle if you through it out a second floor window, but beyond that IDK how you could do it.
Actually if you _heald_ the vehicle while pushing it onto something, then maybe, but that would be similar to putting too much weight on it. With just pushing then letting go, the cars own mass shouldn't be enough to break a wheel when it hits something.

you should have locked the steering for the cars that had steering, it would have caused it to accidentally move out of place, but otherwise good video
Honestly, the way the camper faired is about how an irl Volkswagen Camper would fair. These things were unkillable. Hell, I have a professional course teacher that has one and uses it once in a while for transport.

Next time deffinantly make a longer runway with more speed and mabey some sort of rails to keep the cars running straight also I think a small ramp would be cool to see the cars fly up... or you could put spikes to destroy the car!! I REALLY WANNA SEE THOSE CARS GO BOOM!!! Also... NEVER FORGET PLUTO!!!!

i think lego city people will be turning to very large blockhogs to instead destroy the obstacles like the VW camper did, and not get destroyed themselves
for future references, you should add something for the launching part so it can hold the steering so the cars doesn't turn left or right
You should compare with a seatbelt and without a seatbelt (a rubber band). Also, you want the front to crumple and absorb the impact not just bounce.
You should extend the crash test runway longer so the bigger lego vehicles can get more matching speeds with the smaller lego vehicles

Dammnn, what an epic video! That mechanism for crashing the cars is amazing! I had a feeling James Bond’s car would do good (I mean, it had to 😂) but the camber seriously surprised me
match the camera settings for your lights, so it does not appear Flashing. i think it is Shutter effect, or smthg. keep improving the technical details too, not just the builds ;)
I think the Mustang did the best, with a real crash test they look at how well the car protects the driver, so the car needs to absorb the impact like the 'Stang did.
Total side note: glad my mustang wasn’t the only one with crooked painted panels. The panels that have stripes across the entire set rarely line up, are crooked, different shades of white, etc etc. Seeing yours be the same tells me I am not alone and my set wasn’t a one off.
It’s amazing to me as a car guy that even when scaled down to Lego, non-collapsible steering columns will STILL impale you. 60s cars were dangerous and I love it.
