Ok to counter the comments here, I need to first appreciate the fact there is rhythm in the video here. But as a student of Indian folk and classical music I need to point out that percussion is about rhythm and technique. They go hand in hand and support each other. Ghe ghe na na na na na na is 8 beats but that's not a chaal or a Keherwa as we call it in india. The most basic forms of the dhol kehrwa as we have learnt them are 1) dha na dha na na na na na 2) dha na na na na dha dha na. That the base and treble coming together. As for the way the drummer is holding the dagga and the tilli, they can be held slightly differently from the way they were held traditionally( since the new sticks are more drummer friendly) but the point of impact with the skin needs to match the right technique. Here's a simple padan of the chaal/Keherwa + dhamaal as I like to play it: Dha na na dha na na na dha na Dha na na na na na Dha na dha na na na na na Dha na dha na na dha na na na Dha dha dha dha ta ta Dhan Ghe na ghe nana ghe na dha 8 beats and variations. Sweet and simple
This is the issue with institutions (for example "Leeds City Museum") trying to engage Punjabis as part of a shallow "multiculturalist" agenda. You see it again and again. They go to local Punjabis... whatever Joe Singh Schmoe they can find... And JS Schmoe says, "Yeah, I can give ye the authentic Punjabi culture you Angrez desire." These people are just shysters. But then Leeds Museum curator, Martha Higgenbothom (who enjoys "a good curry now and again") says, "Excellent! My work is finished. Mr. Turban is a True Punjabi, so what he says must be the expert thing." At least, Ms. Higgenbothom is afraid to critique Sardar Schmoe's work... because how can you criticize the work of a Minority person, as a Majority person? And so it goes... Complete nonsense.
Random question but is there a big difference in the sound quality of dhols made by sheesham and those made by mango wood? Which one is the most common also? Thanks in advance
Mango wood is far cheaper and good for beginners or who doesn't want to spend much. But this doesn't mean that mango wood instrument can't sounds good. It's hoe you tune and play.
This is just sad 😥, what kind of rythem is that? And it's not evan the right notes it's na and ge there's no ga anywhere it's ke and he's not evan holding it right sorry im just mad
Lol if anyone watching whatever this video is supposed to be wants to learn to play real dhol I'd recommend checking manvirs channel it really helped me start out
WHY HAS THIS HAD NEARLY 1M VIEWS... THIS IS A JOKE. WORST DEMONSTRATION OF DHOL EVER AND COMPLETELY INCORRECTLY PLAYED BY AN INADEQUATE PLAYER. HOW SOMEONE HAS SPENT THAT MUCH MONEY ON THIS VIDEO IS BEYOND ME.
This is the worst demonstration of the dhol I have ever seen. He's not even playing chaal properly, it should be continuous and fluent. This guy is stopping in the middle to play the 'GE' beat when it should be 'DHA'
I just hope this guy learned good dhol after making this video 🙏
