Dont worry guys...Bangladesh will one day be among the top nations in the world...just have faith and patience in yourselves....bangladeshi culture is one of the richest in the world... If being an Indian I am saying so...then it means this is 200% true!!
I have never seen such a positive video on Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a beautiful country. People are not materialistic in Bangladesh. Every country in the world has poverty now -a -days but unfortunately medias always trade Bangladesh's poverty. Bangladesh has lots of rich people I have seen. Country is full of opportunities and growing so fast.
Thank You for this amazing TED Talk. By the way, the photos are really fascinating. Although I am Bangladeshi I haven't had the opportunity to visit many of the beautiful places you showed. You reminded me of the generosity of the people in Bangladesh and the beauty of the country. I admit that I have been susceptible by the negative ways in which Bangladesh is portrayed in the news but it's important to remember there is hope. This country has a lot of potential. Once again Thank You :D
That is a very good point. As a foreigner we did get a lot of special treatment because we were different. Your point is very true -- if we don't treat each other well, then we're not advancing anywhere.
It is really nice of you Mikey. The way you represented my country its simply outstanding. True that a lot of people doesn't even know this country's name but our potential and rich culture hopefully will draw everyone's attention someday. :-)
Hello nac. I have read the article and wanted to highlight something we could probably both agree on: "This is not to deny that free markets can help reduce poverty. In fact, the private sector must play a critical role..... The best way to alleviate poverty is to raise the real income of the poor by creating opportunities for steady employment at reasonable wages." My proposal to you is that tourism/travel is one such area of employment not yet targeted by Bangladesh.
Thank you for your appreciation, and while I can respect your point of view, I also think that the crushing poverty consistently on display is also not a solution to the problem and we are only seeing one side of the story. I strongly disagree that I have 'romanticised' poverty as described by Karnari and yourself; I have sought to acknowledge it and propose one solution that Bangladesh needs to develop as another pillar in its strategy to fight it.
this is absolutely fantastic, the little nuances he describes by hobu/the people in general are what makes the country that much more special, and he highlighted it perfectly, i loved this, and his bangla is also pretty good haha
Bangladesh needs to branch out of the simplistic economic model it has [garments, remittances & donors]. The pharma industry is rapidly growing but still small. We need to increase our economic complexity index [the only sure-fire way of _sustainably_ lifting people out of poverty *permanently*]. The most robust way of developing is to have a self-perpetuating system where the various industrious [of higher value $] support one another through linkages. For example, when the mechanical-parts industry grows it requires [and hence "supports"] growth in the steel industry. Through such a network of chain-linkages, industry in the country grows together. Thus the industries have to be _related_. This requires some amount of governmental/administrative co-ordination [like in Singapore, for instance]. At present [for reasons that are too long-winded to get into] this is missing in Bangladesh. It is the *KEY* element required for the type of sustainable growth seen in East Asia and the "Tiger" economies. Governmental competence is key in two other areas ▬ raising the average level of literacy [especially amongst the poor] as well as it's _quality_ [this is more difficult], and building well-thought out infrastructure & logistics conducive to business. Since Bangladesh does not have [extractable] resources, it's wealth must ultimately come the way South Korea's has ▬ through a highly literate & skilled workforce. Since it is the 8th largest country by population in the world, and the population is largely ethnically, linguistically, culturally and [for all intents and purposes] religiously homogeneous, this should be both a highly fruitful strategy as well as [relatively] easy to implement. To not beat around the bush, rent extracted by the elites in a country depend on the total level of wealth in the country. As Bangladesh is resource-poor, this should mean that the elites have a vested interest in getting the workforce up to speed and improving the economy as much as possible. In this way, they can extract more $. Cynical, but true. Let's hope the elites in Bangladesh recognize this.
Bro Bangladesh was 80% aid dependent from foreign countries. But Now Bangladesh has become an aid independent country. Government or people's republic of Bangladesh doesn't take aid anymore. And along the industrial fact you stated Bangladesh also have big and growing industry like ship building, IT etc.
He is talking about the road map to become a prosperous nation. Garments industry is not a formula for long term sustainable economic growth or becoming a prosperous country. It would not provide us more than getting rid of Aid. After few years this industry might shift to Africa. We are not ship builder, we are ship breaker., but its not in a significant shape . So we need to plan from now in a more comprehensive way to industrialize the country.. like he mentioned. I wish our policy makers think like him
You did not come across as overly critical and I welcome the feedback; but certainly I think you reacted strongly. I also don't feel that romanticising the poor is appropriate either. If we speak at the level of how to depict Bangladesh abroad, do you feel we should be continuing to hold out the donations jar for the poor? What other approaches do you believe will create value and an economy to create jobs? That's what I'd like to know about and support.
Thanks for bring the real beauty into light. Bangladesh is such a place you will keep asking yourselves why did not you came earlier. Come and check it..!!!
We should however never undermine the very poverty and political, urbanism and cultural problems in Bangladesh. In an optimistic way, it sure is better to improve out country, but we should never limit ourselves by putting "THE BANGLADESHI PEOPLE" in one block. It undermines the fact that there is a huge income disparity and class disparity where the rich and the poor are like day and night and do not value things thw same way. Help the poor and make the city greener and cleaner with less cars instead of insinuating that the poor have enough. Non material values are life essentials to make one happy but it sounds very gready for a Westerner to say that they have enough. I think my people deserve better.
The dude did a great job, shed some real good insight from a foreign eye, but I wish his narration was a little better. Maybe a bit more persuasive, exciting, and into it. Regardless, I am grateful, and appreciate his effort, work, and positive representation, and wish him well towards his future endeavours.
In Bangladesh we just try to present the best we can to our guests no matter how poor we are. And if u are foreigner. May god help u. We will grab by ur hand and wont let u go unless u eat something. Yes we are madlads when it comes to hospitality...
#mekey_leung thnxs man that we always tried to say that , in western media it shows a lot more negative thing than positive things in Bangladesh . may god bless u . i agree we have negative views , every country does , but we also have vibrating colorful n energetic life . that we be a life long exotic experience for a traveler . if u are going in Bangladesh for holidays n want to just relax n have fun , directly go to Chittagong n from there to Coxs bazar . if want to see wild life direct go to shundorban , the largest mangrove forest in the world . if u want to do some energetic in holidays like tracking , than go to Bandorbon . just start your journey from Chitagong not from Dhaka , thn u will feel really less the rush of life n all the negative vibes . i m sure u will love all those places. we have many more destinations , start your Bangladesh will surprise u in every time u travel Bangladesh . the land of color sweet peoples #Bangladesh. one more thing vedio theme was really touching thxs bro .
Ordinery people are more hospitable than the politicians, government administrative people. One has to integrate with the ordinery people society or community to understand and feel that. It cannot be felt by reading books, literature or even watching videos. But thanks a lot to you to portray some of it. I partly live in Toronto
It is the negative mind set of people which is barring foreigners to come & see the country... Unfortunately, the diplomats in foreign embassies have been inactive to promote such stuffs which this generous guy has tried a bit... on the economic side, there are lots of opportunities as well we need to focus on...
Hi Mikey, I appreciate all you said about Bangladesh. It was excellent. I am living in Australia and want to share your experiences and I want to contribute in Tourism/education infrastructures in Bangladesh. I wonder how to communicate with you and share our experiences. I can give my email or Skype or weChat or WhatsApp or Vibre address. Please let me know. Thanks.
Thanks. Bangladesh taught me that. I just had to be open enough to receive her gifts.
