As a saints fan Tom was spot on with his van dijk comment. He was world class at saints he was the main reason we went from a relegation team to a team 3 points outside the champions league spots in 1 season.

@@Inviigorated Thiago Silva might just be one of the best to ever do it. Real shame he didn’t come to the premier league earlier on in his career. It’s a real testament to the type of player he is to come into the league at his age and be as effective as he has been. Top class.

Respect the shut out to Ledley King. If Theo was paying attention he'd have heard that Thierry Henry said King was the best CB he played against. A lot of strikers of that time will say the same.
Tom is heavily disrespecting Kompany, he didn't only score 'one' goal, scored in 3 crucial title races, moving on to his defensive capabilities, the likes of Suarez, Diego Costa, and others have called him one of the hardest centre-halves to play against. Additionally, he was very comfortable on the ball, Rudiger esc charging with the ball. Without his injury track record he would have pushed towards Rio and Terry.
Kompany really wasn’t anything. Once again people just being nostalgic.

Van Dijk being considered one of the greatest PL defenders of all time is like saying Haaland is one of the greatest strikers in PL history. Being world class for a short period doesn’t warrant the “all time” accolade. Perhaps if Van Dijk did it for 3/4 more seasons at that level then of course he would be in the conversation.

If you’re picking peak form over longevity van dijk is clear by a mile but the best centre back overall is rio because he was more physical than terry, cutting it close though
If you consider the accolades , where Terry captained his team to all the trophies and Rio didn’t , and also as a Captain CB had the least amount of goals conceded in a season I personally don’t think it’s arguable

John Terry was criminally underrated for how good he was technically on the ball.
Also the number of goals he popped up with and the number of tap-ins others scored from his saved headers too was ridiculous.
Man had 3 incredible CB partnerships over the course of 15 years. William Gallas, then Carvalho, then Gary Cahill.

I really like the stones shout. Everyone with half a brain would realize the best defenders nowadays are the ones who play in tight areas are brave relieving the ball play under a press. The best defenders nowadays are the ones who keep the ball for your team thus keeping the ball means you're defending your goal by keepering the ball. If you have the ball the other team can't score and john stones had been very good for city and contributed titles. That's why anyone who has Terry 1st is hilarious and completely out of touch living in fairy land
The best defenders actually play more than 2000 minutes every season. And if you ever watched a single football match when John Terry played, you'd know he was actually very good on the ball. That's just not what people put in his highlight videos.
