Elinor is played by actress Joana David, who also played Mrs Gardiner, Elizabeth Bennet's Aunt, in Pride and Prejudice in 1995.

I think allowances should be made for the fact that this version is almost 50 years old so resources, financing and production values would have been very different, even for a BBC production. To judge it by today's standards is a little harsh. There was often in the 1970s more emphasis on being as faithful to the book as possible and this would certainly have affected things like screenplay, direction and interpretation of character. I love the theatricality of these productions. Of course, they are very far from the slick versions of later years but they are also less overtly emotional which fits in more with the reserve and social etiquette of the period - swings and roundabouts.
Doubtless film students of the future who wish to study the development of costume drama have a wealth of material in Jane Austen dramas to compare and contrast. Imho I do think they all have something of merit to offer. I have to say I don't miss the incidental music that occurs so frequently in later productions and which is used as a means of 'guiding' our reactions to particular scenes.

I have this series on DVD. I have every version I can find of Jane Austen movies, and I enjoy them so much. But, this is the worst acting, I believe, in any of them. Elinor is not too bad, but Marianne and her mother are just about the worst actresses ever, lol. Thank you for uploading! The worst of Jane Austen movies is better than anything the movie industry tries to pass off as movies today, and that's for sure!

The 1970's was a time of interesting costumes and we, as a culture, were only beginning to understand HISTORIC in a scientific way... Think My Fair Lady, the movie, the clothes were wonderful, but not correct, the make-up was horrid, and the hair 60's. We have come a long way!

Manvi NK Emma Thomson did the script for the movie in the 90s , Kate Winslet played Marianne and Thomson played Elinor . No need to do any more movies as this one is perfect . I wouldn't mind a BBC mini series with Andrew Davus. Though.

Really bad bit of directing, given that the scene appears to be in a heritage property, rather than a house: Mother walks in, takes of her cloak and dumps it over the 17th century porcelain bowl which is sitting on the little round table. Marion then puts her hat on top of it. So I wonder if the person who picked the costumes up when that scene was shot succeeded in smashing the bowl.

A few years ago, when I hadn't read the book, I came across this. And I couldn't stand the cringe. I was astounded that this wasn't supposed to be a comedy.
But having read the book, and watched the 1995 movie, this version seems the closest to the book. Not in the script, even though it is, but in the way of acting and expressing. That's how it's always shown in the book, she cried this, she cried that. They expressed that way in that age, most probably. By almost shouting.
And this thing lacked in the movie. Movie Marianne wasn't a bit like the book version. She wasn't lively or energetic. She didn't express emotions fully/dramatically, which the character was supposed to.
