despite the fact that u had no script for this vid I'm so glad u did the demos for it on the tablet. Cuz im really exctied about it and even tho im like 99.9% i'ma get it, i'm glad that now i have a more realistic view on what to expect :) Thank you so much!
Great video Shogmaster! Its good to finally see a review from an artist point of view. The Galaxy Note 10.1 seems to be the best art tool for it's price range at the moment.
Thanks for the great video! I love the little comments about the responsiveness and palm rejection. This has been the best review for "art users" like myself for these tablet PC/Android devices. I hope you'll be able to review the new line of Windows 8 tablets and other new surfacing pressure sensitivity technology.
I'm choosing a present for someone and looking at iPad3 or Samsung Galaxy Note. A drawing package is the important application and up to this point I was concerned about comments about Sketchbook Pro and problems with Palm rejection on the Samsung. It is a shame Autosketch can't use you video to show people that if you keep the tip at 14mm you will have no problems! Thank you for the info. Steve
Anyway, this review helped me a lot in the world of tablets (cintiq alternatives and stuffs) and the things to keep in mind at the moment of searching a device. spending more than 400-600 Us in a tablet it`s not an option for me, the next range it`s has to be something like the T902, if you can make enough money to buy the Ativ Pro 700t for example, make an effort, save up a little more and get real. Long story short, i`m loving the Note for serious creative purposes. Thnx for the review Shog!
Thanks man. Great video, and as the comments say, it makes my expectations much more realistic. Unfortunately where I am right now is a bit slow on Samsung realises and the Note 10.1 is due to come out in a week or so. I'll try it and probably get it later somewhere cheap like Hong kong. Really comprehensive.
With regular Wacom tablets, you won't notice input lag anyways since lines won't be appearing at the pen tip. If you want to minimize input lag, getting a fast Tablet PC (like Fujitsu T902) or fast PC with Cintiq is ideal.
Also, I don't think the note was intended to be a replacement or even an alternative to a pc....just to be used to get your artistic ideas out of your head when your on the go; without having to carry paper and markers around with you. Great review!
Palm rejection is availabe with the "pen mode", in s note and sketchbook pro (preferences), works amazingly well.(Note 10.1). I haven`t notice annoying lag in linework, maybe it is, but i haven`t tested any other device to compare. IMO, the Note 10.1 works great for an affordable option, I own an Intuos 5 so for anything more detailed i export it to my desktop to finish it. I bought it expecting a lot less from what i got. It has a lot of "cons", but it`s the cheapest REAL option in the market
Hey , awesome video and thanks for the art perspective. I have an Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet which is very similar ... Its an android tablet , a bit thick, has a usb port. Though I would say the Note 10.1 would be slightly better as its wacom techology and the lenovo one is N-trig ( rougher ) . I hope one day they fix the smoothness and responsiveness , I also feel its software as I have an app called Lecture notes and its super realtime quick and my lenovo is only dual core.
The android version does let you customize the brush. If you click on the thing that looks like a paint brush (in the black bar on top). The settings will appear
Shog, it would be great to see a supplementary video with you using LayerPaint. I know you've been very satisfied with that app, and were singing its praises for a while. This video clearly demonstrates some issues making art on the Note 10.1", but I felt like you got answers to those issues. Viewers might think they should just avoid this device all together, I that didn't seem to be your final opinion, right?
If you don't paint with PS using advanced features like adjustment layers and clipping layers, you can replicate your experience with SBP on Note 10.1 fine. Painting strokes can be slower and more methodical, so it's less stress on the CPU. As for replacing Cintiq or Intuos 4, that depends if you can make do with what's available on Android. To me, that's a while away. For now, it's a good supplement/compliment to your PC/Mac + Cintiq, not a replacement.
Depends on apps. Sketchbook Pro is 1280 x 7xx (you don't even get 800). Layer Paint will let you set your own resolution, but anything beyond 1280 x 800, brushes start to lag.
Hi thanks for the video! one thing you didn't talk about - what about painting and not just sketching with the Note? I paint a lot using photoshop- can this replace the cintiq or the Intous4?
Great vid. I have the new iPad and tried the note today at bestbuy. When I went into the ps touch ap and tried doing a simple orientation conversion it was acting funny I had to tap the screen very hard for it to convert. They did not have the pen on display, so I could not try it out. Have you had and type of trouble with it.i also noticed it not being as fluid as the I pad. Not trying to start any fanboy war. I am realy wanting a good touch screen solution for my art projects. My budget is ab
Also there's the TV paint app which a lot of artists are talking about, apparently it's now available for Android devices in Beta or sth like that, and people r sayin it's amazin. Maybe u could review it some time for us if you're interested? I believe there's people out there like me who've never used digital graphics tools but are art oriented and see the Note 10.1 as an interestin opportunity to start usin these tools. I'd like to see how far I can go towards semi-professional with it. Thnxs!
Found out after posting the video, lol. Funny bit though, is that you can't adjust the minimum size to below 1 pixel, so you still have a weird problem with fading in and out with the brush.

THANK YOU! :D Finally someone that has explored Sketchbook Pro on android! I have been trying to figure out if the palm rejection is native to certain tablets, native to skecthbook pro, or is android in general. This video really helps me out for when I go tablet shopping but one more thing stands in my way. Which would you consider, the Lenovo S2110 (love its formfactor and dock options but hate the processor) or Asus TF700 (hate the dock design but love the processor)?
I'd also like to watch a soft brush with pressure affecting both size and opacity at the same time, but as I haven't seen any of that already I guess that functionality is not available at the moment, am I right?
Shogmaster, do a search for TVPaint Beta on Android and sign up. The programs you've reviewed are quite poor when compared to it and another called LayerPaint. TVPaint's brush engine is more inline with Painter on the desktop. I use a Cintiq 12wx on my Mac and if it tracks at 100%, my Note 10.1 tracks at above 98% with TVPaint. I'm quite happy with my Note 10.1. It's ultra portable, light, and faster than my old DP Mac of which I did poster illustrations on. It just needs more software.
so...then, better the ipad+pressure sensitive stylus or note 10.1 for sketching? One more question, the skbp in the note 10.1 allows stand your hand on the screen isn´t it?
Just bought sketch pro for 0.25 dollars today from google play store, Photo Shop and S Note comes free with note 10.1. I wouldn't compare 200 dollar software on i7 machine with no palm rejection and almost the same pressure sensitivity with something free, resourceful and better I can use for productivity. Not to mention rest of the package it has like multitasking, sharing/connectivity and mobility (of a tablet).
So, please can you link me or say what are the best artist options tablet pc (don´t mind used) or new. Really they are so much better than note 10.1 and his 1024 pressure sensor? (tablet pc also have 1024 pressure points?) Cintiq is not portable mate....
@aronosink... I don't know what could have been wrong, but the fact of the matter is that an iPad simply technically can not match the note 10.1 on a hardware level for drawing. Its just not possible. The tech in the devices makes that obvious.
Exactly! Thats what I really truly hate about drawing on an Android device (I tried Note1 and Note 10.1) > LAG! (Draw a line and after that it appears, when it should be real time 1:1) And thats why im planning on getting a Win8 "Pro" tablet, most likely i will go with Surface Pro. The other issue is, when you draw on a display, it feels like Plastic on Plastic, there is not resistance, not sure how to explain it...it does not feel like drawing on paper :/
That's pretty difficult to do in CS5.1 actually. Either you are drawing too fast or your driver for the Graphire is not working properly. Try installing Sketchbook Pro 6 trial and see if you have the same problem.
You can't buy a "new" Hp 2740p. It's old. And I got it for $800 on Ebay 2 years ago. :P You can now get a refurbed 2760p for around the same amount on Ebay.
4) the most important part. if you did research you would have found out that the s pen has adjustment screws under its button. i got mine so sensitive, that i can make it mark on the tablet with out applying any pressure, just like a real pencil! your right, you should have done some preparation before you made this video.
I can't draw well enough while looking at the LCD of the camera that's pointing at the tablet screen, and I don't want to make these videos even longer than they already are. If you need to see my artwork to judge whether what I'm saying in the video has merit, one of my videos has some samples in the descriptions. The reason I keep drawing fast circles in these videos is because they are the toughest test for these tablets for brush engine quality and tablet hardware muscle.
Thanks a lot ! Well I suppose I (we) 'll have to wait a little longer ( next year ?!?) to buy a light digital drawing device and spend most of the day working in a park , under a tree (ok, and wi-fi), rather than bending over a desk all along ...
That's really weird how yours is breaking up when drawing circles.. i have the original galaxy note 1 and mine doesn't break when drawing circles in Snote nomatter how fast..
Since this video sketchbook has implemented pen only mode for drawing meaning as soon as the pen comes in range of the tablet, it rejects all other inputs
Highly doubtful. Those bums can't be bothered to add Portrait mode and higher resolution canvas options so BT keyboard support seems way too wishful thinking. If you require such, get a Samsung ATIV Smart PC or other Atom based Windows 8 slates so you can run REAL sketchbook Pro 6 and have keyboard shortcuts with it.
Try SBP6 on W8 Wacom slate and see if your Note 10.1 centric view holds up. Until then, you are just fooling yourself, but as they say, ignorance is bliss. Enjoy your bliss.
As previously mentioned, this video is factually incorrect. Nothing against the author, but it could sway people's decisions regarding the Note 10.1 & Sketchbook PRO. Still a great demo for the S-pen.
well dude, i think you should delete this video. 1) because you have no idea how to use sketchbook pro for android. there are the exact same inputs for brush size and whatever you what. only difference is that it only goes down to 1.0 but that can be adjusted...keep reading. 2) so much has changed since aug 2011. sketchbook has added a pen only mode for the s pen. 3) you might have a defective unit because everyone elses note got faster with the jellybean update except for yours.
dude when u make those videos probably would be better to make something nice and tell here is better and its not.. not curcles which u compare tablet with laptop .. quite big difference androit and os so .. try to paint something nice on both devices and tell here i can do it better or its the same or whatever of course tablet could be laggy becouse the processor is smaller than ure HP :)
despite the fact that u had no script for this vid I'm so glad u did the demos for it on the tablet. Cuz im really exctied about it and even tho im like 99.9% i'ma get it, i'm glad that now i have a more realistic view on what to expect :) Thank you so much!
Can u pls make an actual drawing using the note with layers and stuff, wanna get a feel for how the tab holds its own. Great vid
Great video Shogmaster! Its good to finally see a review from an artist point of view. The Galaxy Note 10.1 seems to be the best art tool for it's price range at the moment.

It looks like the most sincere review on Note 10.1's digital sketching feature. Thanks a lot.
Many thanks for taking the time to post this. It addresses exactly the kind of questions I had regarding the Note
I'm choosing a present for someone and looking at iPad3 or Samsung Galaxy Note. A drawing package is the important application and up to this point I was concerned about comments about Sketchbook Pro and problems with Palm rejection on the Samsung. Now it's much better stylus support in SketchBook Pro 2.2. Also try TVPaint for Android, it's very sensitive and powerful program.

you can tweak brush settings by selecting the brush icon on the tool bar not in the tool box.

Oops on sketch book pro, z brush , mud box and toon boom.thanks for your great vids hope you can help me choose, much appreciated .
It does. And from what I've read on Adobe Ideas reviews, I'm not wasting $10 on it.
I'd also like to watch a soft brush with pressure affecting both size and opacity at the same time, but as I haven't seen any of that already I guess that functionality is not available at the moment, am I right?

sNote win8 app on samsung ativ smart pc does have that button to block capacitive input.
how big is the maximum output resolution in drawing with galaxy note 10.1? can it be at A3 size? thx
so...then,
better the ipad+pressure sensitive stylus or note 10.1 for sketching?
One more question, the skbp in the note 10.1 allows stand your hand on the screen isn´t it?
thx man ~ was considering to get Lenovo X230T thou
is it possible to use the note as like a display for your pc? sorta use it like a cintiq? maybe thats asking for too much huh haha
have you tested the pressure sensitive stylus (bluetooth 4) for ipad 4?
what´s your opinion?
thx man,
so is that mean getting a desktop and a wacom tablet can eliminate the input lag ?
can you sketch while streaming a movie? since i hear the samsung galaxy note 10.1 can open multi apps
AS i know the ADobe Ideas is preloaded on the Glaxy note 10.1.
Thanks for the review

I'm thinking about getting the HP 2740p for drawing. It's it good? I want a computer for drawing. Not an android
can you export a drawing from say sketchbook pro and open into photoshop?
very helpful man very nice explaination thank you very much
Thank you so much for this. Just what I was searching for.
do you test the ipad skbp? (with pressure sensitive stylus)
i use note 10.1 with screensaver. it makes surface better for drawing.
Probably software. What program and version?
Have you tried the TVPaint android beta?
Do you know if those pens will work in the galaxy tab 2 7.0?
can i set resolution and canvas size?
@Silverpfurby Watch some of feng zu's videos, his work is extraordinary
@aronosink... I don't know what could have been wrong, but the fact of the matter is that an iPad simply technically can not match the note 10.1 on a hardware level for drawing. Its just not possible. The tech in the devices makes that obvious.
That functionality is available on the Sketchbook Pro.
You can save as PSD in Sketchbook Pro.
Try the apps "TV paint" and "Paint Layer".
I have the Photoshop Touch and I don't like it. The precision is very bad on it.
is the s pen button mappable to undo?
Exactly! Thats what I really truly hate about drawing on an Android device (I tried Note1 and Note 10.1) > LAG! (Draw a line and after that it appears, when it should be real time 1:1)

the input lag on the tablet is because on the processor ? seems like the HP is way better
If your pen tip is within 1cm of the screen surface, you can rest your palm.
That's pretty difficult to do in CS5.1 actually. Either you are drawing too fast or your driver for the Graphire is not working properly. Try installing Sketchbook Pro 6 trial and see if you have the same problem.
Do you believe a Wacom Bamboo would give better performance than Note 10.1?

This or ipad 4?
turn Smoth brush off, and lags will disappear
thank you very much!
Thanks a lot !
Well I suppose I (we) 'll have to wait a little longer ( next year ?!?) to buy a light digital drawing device and spend most of the day working in a park , under a tree (ok, and wi-fi), rather than bending over a desk all along ...
The input lag difference is definitely due to the processor difference. Older dual core Intel Core i5 absolutely destroys latest ARM quad core A9.
has someone tested Infinite painter with this tablet ?
No pressure sensitivity setting on LectureNote that I can see... A shame.
The brush engine is slow under jellybean in sketchbook Pro for me.
That's really weird how yours is breaking up when drawing circles..
i have the original galaxy note 1 and mine doesn't break when drawing circles in Snote nomatter how fast..
Since this video sketchbook has implemented pen only mode for drawing meaning as soon as the pen comes in range of the tablet, it rejects all other inputs
i can't find a skech drawing inside my computer
For the price of a new HP 2740P I prefeir take Cintiq on ebay :x
any other advice will be listened.
u have a whole bunch of background apps mayb thats wuts makinf it lag or mayb its jst not there yet
p.s. mine does not lag like yours. not at all. and im glad.
im using this tablet and i like it cuz it looks old
If you'll switch off "Smooth Brush" on SketchBook Pro Note 10.1, it'll be mach more better.and faster.
Check my new video comparing Note 10.1 to the new Samsung ATIV Smart PC. Much more compelling device for artists...
It will under same parameters. Sorry but it's true.
Nope. No video in for Galaxy Note 10.1, so you couldn't even hack in that functionality...
I have the note 10.1 and the lag went away wit jelly bean
Android doesn't let me map them AFAIK.
Try SBP6 on W8 Wacom slate and see if your Note 10.1 centric view holds up. Until then, you are just fooling yourself, but as they say, ignorance is bliss. Enjoy your bliss.
