for "she is a little shy" Google says :
她有点害羞
and 有点儿 translates as "kind of.."
Thus is literal chinese version expresses similar thought in a slightly indirect and with that more polite way ?
I.e. even talking about third person you should express your opinion about her in a delicate not that assertive fashion ?

I think that 有点 means "somewhat" or "a little" when the result is undesirable.
So I think that 她有点害羞 means you think her shyness is undesirable.
I don't think that 有点 means "kind of". For "kind of", I would use 挺…的 or 蛮.
So I would say 她挺害羞的 or 他蛮害羞 for "She's kind of shy" (without criticizing her).
Anyways, that's how I understand it.
