LK kind of took a risk with Arthas and Frostmourne.

However, by the time we get to the undead campaign, that spell had been interrupted by Malfurion and Maiev before Illidan could finish casting it. In the last mission, the LK's powers are draining due to the reasons he mentioned in the cutscene.
Well, Blizzard offered him an embarrassingly low amount of money, so he turned down the role as advised by his agent. If there's someone to blame, it's the corporate suits over at Blizzard

If anyone ever tells you that WoTLK is overrated show em this i mean yeah the game got easier removing the need of strategic polymorph or any other strong CC But it was the conclusion to the best storyline of Warcraft. Nah, it was shit cause it ruined the LK storyline by retconning some real cool stuff about him. Hopefully Blizzard comes to its senses and starts development of WC4 and disregard WoW's storyline completely.
Right now, Blizzard is more focused on milking World of Warcraft and Starcraft 2 as long as they can before endeavoring to do something remotely new and creative. (wish it were 1998 or something, the market then did not allow for this expand an old, outdated game with marginal new features and resell it full price nonsense.
