I identify with this so much. I'm turning 50 this year. Oldest guy on the team by 10 years. Play with guys as young as 18. Having trouble keeping up - legs are gone. Eyesight is bad. Knees work half the time. Takes me days to recover and work the next day is tough. Injuries take forever to heal. Wife always asks me, " is this your last year?" Can my ego handle being not able to compete at a level i would like? It might be my last year. Thought I was ready to let it go last year. My last game was pretty emotional. Literally crying going out onto the ice. The boys knew I was considering hanging it up. I've played with these guys for the past 7 years. Seen them grow up and have families of their own. Hard to give up something you love. I love being at the rink.
Maybe once you hang ‘em up you could become your team’s coach, I know that’s what a guy I used to play with did. We loved still having him around even if he wasn’t playing since he was such a good locker room presence.
I thought I was the only one welling up over this clip. I played baseball (amateur hardball) until I was 48. Way past my ability to leg out a double. One day, our pitcher took a line drive off his shin. Broke it. He was 54 at the time. I felt so badly for him. In a show of...something...I fireman carried him by myself to his car so his wife could drive him to the hospital. About ten yards from his car I felt something give in my knee. Wound up being my last game, too. That "forever" is a hell of a word.
Nah... 50 is just a number... i just rolled it as well and do the same (am oldest by 10 yrs and play with guys as young as 18)... have lossed a couple steps but screw it "you ain't getting passed me prick" (moved back to defense a long time ago)... ha.

I took a photo I forgot about that came up in my memories today. It's me in an empty dressing room about midnight after a beer league game. Just me and the empty case of beer we drank while listening to music and partying after a loss, last game of the season. I took it because I didn't know if I'd ever play again. This episode made me feel like that. Luckily, I'm still playing in my mid 50's, and just won a championship, but there will be a day when we all lace them up for the last time. Every game is a privilege.
This show gets "me". I love playing this game. 60 is coming up fast. I know my time is coming to an end. I don't do things nowhere near as good as I used to, but, I still love it and will play as long as I can. This clip is so beautiful.
So relatable for players. I'm now 52 and haven't played competitively since I was 27. I didn't know at the time that my last game was going to be my last game. Weird how you look back on some of your best days without realizing what they were at the time. I could watch this episode opener over and over again.
A locker room is such a good collection of characters. Hockey has a great number of guys, not too small like basketball and not to big like football. You can know everyone but have enough guys there to always keep it fresh and entertaining.
Yeah bud. I’m 43 and haven’t played in years but I was wrapping duct tape around some pvc pipe for a temp fix the other day and was right back wrapping my stick. The same motion the same precision the same excitement for some damn reason.
Guys in that room are your best friends for life. I'm 62 and hoping to be the first guy over 60 to get a Gordie Howe on elite prospects. They may need to change the name to elite prospects and Chinner after that though. I skated with a few of those boys over the years. Love and respect boys.
Yep. Played beer league. Alternated coaching one of my son's teams, watched the other, every game every practice. Both of the reffed. Watched every one of those too. Even ran the clock for the junior team.
