    I have been listening to your podcast and I really appreciate you as an educator over an entertainer (like the other people who watch you, I am also entertained by learning). I have referred to you as the “Carl Sagan of spiders”. I hope you and your family (Billie seems amazing and a women after my own heart!) have a great holiday in your new home.

    Hey Tom, wonderful video! My lord is that a chubby little spider! I actually thought I had lost mine at one point, I hadn't seen it in months, food wasn't getting eaten, etc. After 6 months I was getting ready to clean out the enclosure since I assumed it was dead- and it was still a small sling at this point. I walked by one night and happened to look over at my tarantulas and lo and behold, there it was, incredibly skinny, emaciated even, the abdomen was beyond shrivelled and it looked very small and weak. I prekilled a cricket and dropped it in there and it my goodness that thing ate like it was starving. It's now a healthy beefy spider but that was a pretty weird event. It has maybe 3 inches of substrate so it's not like it couldn't feel the prey (like with your P. muticus) it just was choosing not to come up. Weird. Thankfully it's doing great now and an absolutely gorgeous spider. I love those little blue feet! I frequently see mine dangling its feet out by its trapdoor. Yours is absolutely adorable! Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

      We just rehoused this one because she had abandoned her burrow! And, wow...what a close call! I'm so glad to hear that the story ended well and that she is doing okay. I've had that happen with other spiders, and it doesn't always have to be particularly deep substrate. My G. pulchra sling did it, and the sub was only about 2" deep or so. I don't know why that happens, but it's always something to keep in the back of your mind. Thanks again!

      @@TomsBigSpiders Any advice on combating mold for an I. Mira sling? Ours keeps leaving leftovers down in the bottom of its burrow that keep molding. So can't really get in there to remove them without wrecking it all. Having to rehouse ours for the third time today in 2 months because of it. 😕 Was thinking of using springtails but I'm not sure if that would require too much moisture for an I. Mira in a dram vial.

    Pretty big abdomen.
    Good luck with moving all stuff. A large movie collection and stuff? I can totally understand; it would be the same for me. But not with so many animals. A full collection tour would be great once all spiders moved. I always thought you were actually standing in that small room :)

      I was actually shocked by her enormous booty! Yeah, Billie and I got one of the first DVD players for a wedding gift back in 98, and you couldn't rent DVDs then. So, I started buying them. Fast-forward 20+ years, and I've amassed about 3,000 DVDs and Blu Rays. Hahaha And I always thought that was cool until I had to pack them all up. And I will definitely be doing a tour as soon as everything is set up. Are you serious? Haha I guess my green screen work IS passable. haha Thanks again, Aphilia!

    Tom,
    Maybe you’ve already done this and i know each species varies but could you do a video over substrate. Which you prefer and what works best for more arid species, and then what’s best for more humid ? If you’ve already done this could you point it out to me. Really want to improve my husbandry.
    Thank you

      @TomsBigSpiders  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Tim. I've been pretty good with untimely or unexplained deaths. Out of few hundred tarantulas, I've had maybe 10? Out of those, most were slings.

    Hi Tom, unrelated question to the video, how are enclosures down there in the walmart’s and stuff? walmart and dollar stores have completely changed stock here and have nothing, they don’t even have their normal 1G rubbermaid jars!
    By the way, Good luck with the move, I hope things go well!!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Ben! The stock has been terrible. Not only have they stopped selling a lot of the things I used, their stock has been totally picked over. I joked with Billie that everyone must hoarding storage bins for the pandemic now. haha
      And thanks so much! We've been in the new house for a week now, and I'll be shooting our first video here later today.

    Question, I am a T collector and I love everyone of them. I notice little moving white dust looking bugs. I cleaned everything with apple cider vinegar, soap and water. Is there drops I can put in there enclosure to kill the mites ( If that is what they are ).

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Dawn. Are you able to let things dry out? Usually, they can't survive if you let everything dry out. Also, make sure to remove any boluses. As far as I know, the only thing that you can safely use to kill them off is predatory mites.
