Was so excited to find this. My son & I are heading up to the UP starting from NC on Friday 9/27. We're going to end up in Eagle River WI for a week at a lakeside cabin. On our way back down we'll see Sleeping Bear Dunes. My son has autism & this is our first real vacation road trip. He's so excited too...lots of camping & stops on the way. Thanks for all the helpful info.
nicole hikesalot here, amazing journey and I miss the UP. You had some awesome campsites and that first boondocking spot by the lake was great. Still have to make it to the Porcupine Mountains, it looked amazing. Definitely true that the UP is wild and just as amazing as any place out west.
Glad you enjoyed it! I loved those campsites. Porcupine Mountains didn't "wow" me the way Pictured Rocks did, but I'm sure it would be amazing in the fall, and a great place for backcountry camping. Hope your Colorado trip is going well!
I visited Sleeping Bear Dunes about 30 yrs ago, and the dunes were still in the process of covering some of the coastal housing along the shoreline. Roof lines stuck out of one or two of the dunes. They are shifting dunes and have covered a number of homes.
I can sure see the difference in Sleeping Bear and Indiana dunes! Wow the climb looked wicked! I can definitely see why the Upper Falls reminded you of Cumberland Falls. The wife and I have been talking about visiting Pictured Rocks. Sure looked like a great trip! Thanks for sharing!
I was born and raised in upper Michigan like I say it’s a U.P thing you wouldn’t understand this video is amazing it captures our beautiful country hope you had a pastie
Mark, came across this video and it brought back many great memories for me. I too am from Lafayette and spent three and a half years in the U P while in the Air Force. That was 60 years ago when I left. I have only been back once since then. Amazing how every thing has changed. I truly enjoyed your trip through "gods country".
We just wrapped up the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival last night. Two days of music on 3 different stages. Everything from rock, to bluegrass, gospel, jazz...you name it. Weekend before Labor Day every year. A very good time to come up for a few days, catch a few shows, take a few hikes. Late Summer, the bugs are down, the weather as good as it gets. I am from West Lafayette Indiana, retired to Ontonagon 4 years ago. And if you travel to Bergland Antonio's is a must stop. Bergland is at the North tip of Lake Gogebic, a huge lake that has a great State Park. Lots of fish, but difficult to fish, unless you're really good. The park on Gogebic is maybe 30-40 miles from the Porkie's, and there are Township parks in both Ontonagon and Bergland. The Western UP is a great place to come to, to avoid the crowds that Pictured Rocks has.
Sounds like fun! We did eat at Antonio's, awesome food. Pictured Rocks wasn't busy AT ALL when we were there, since their season hadn't really begin yet. I definitely need to explore the western end of the UP, so much more to see!
@@SlonesWildernessExpeditions Yes, all of the UP has "between seasons" a time where the parks have few visitors. I think your video was made in May? That was possibly the first week the Porkie's, and Pictured Rocks was open for the season.
@@WilliamEricStone If you watched the video, we were in Pictured Rocks 3 days before the visitor centers or campgrounds opened. The place was dead, it was perfect! Even the streets of Munising were deserted. I'd really like to visit the UP in the fall, but I'm sure it would be crowded then!
@@SlonesWildernessExpeditions Yes! "Between seasons". Between snowmobiles and summer campers. Much easier in the spring, as you can get into places during snow melt that are not officially open. Fall is much tricker, cause we never know up here when it is going to come. In just 4 years up here I have seen winter arrive in October, and I have seen it not get here till December. Late last year so we are expecting, (hoping), it will be early this year. By the way a really once in a lifetime experience is to snowshoe, or ski, to the Lake of the Clouds after the road is closed. In both cases you have to be expert at what you are doing and be prepared for the worst. But generally speaking the DNR has eyes on what is going on, and winter rescue is a normal thing.
Hey you are in my backyard. Those ponds are planted with brook trout. Lots of deer around the ponds also. Nice video and it is cool in May. I lived in the area or over fifty years but in my old age decided living on the Gulf of Mexico is better for my old age body.
I bet those ponds are full of fishermen during the warmer months! You lived in a fantastic area, and now you live in a different fantastic area. Enjoy!
What a awesome trip!! I would love to visit the Upper Peninsula Michigan. Which park do you recommend , I live in nortwest Indiana and I'll have 4 days (leave friday early and back Monday night) to travel. Thank your for your response.
Dispersed camping in Michigan state forests do not require a passport. Camping in state forest campgrounds, do. My suggestion is always purchase a passport if you utilize Michigan's wilderness. It is just the right thing to do.
I am bummed to see they have mosquitos!! I hate mosquitos!! I live in the south and was hoping to move north to Michigan to get away from the stupid mosquitos!
These two do a great job. As a Michigander whose explored every inch of the wild...seemingly, this is great. Ty!
Wow, thanks for the compliment! I am envious, we don't have anything like what you have in Michigan down here in Indiana. Beautiful state!
So beautiful! This fellow Hoosier has this on my bucket list!
It is worth it! Thanks for watching.
I think it’s the year for a tour of the U.P. I really enjoyed this video.
I hope you get to! We skipped over a lot, so I know we'll be back!

That sounds awesome! My son is on the spectrum, but getting out into nature has always been one of his favorite things. Enjoy!

Pictured Rocks is awesome, I'd love to backpack all the way through someday. Hope you can make it up there!

It was even more amazing than I could have expected. I'm jealous you get to live in such a beautiful area!
That water is beautiful 😍 great father and son bonding. ✌️
It really is beautiful up there! Thanks for watching.

Great video, thanks for sharing. love the northern lights.
Northern lights were an unexpected surprise! Thanks for watching.
You missed the Glass Bottom Ship wreck tour in Munising. It's awesome!!
They hadn't started yet!
Glad I got in for a minute before it was done...
Glad you stopped in. The video description has time stamps if there's anything you'd like to check out!
Funniest part is when he said 50° was chilly. That's still shorts weather here.
🤣 This is true.

Pictured Rocks offers the most, IMO. Hike that shoreline if you can.
Hey, I’m traveling in the U.P. Too!
Beautiful up there!
Just spent the 4th of july week on the north shore of lake Michigan never got above 76 while most of the country was in the 90s including downstate

Thanks for the info. I got a passport just to make sure we were covered!

Most of what was in this video were midges, about the same size as mosquitos, but they don't bite.
They are everywhere. North south east and west.
they are even in the desert environment of Dubai during the less hot months, especially after it rains.
Mosquitoes are everywhere they are worse in the UP the ones in this video are like the mayfly hatchings and don’t bite like mosquitoes
If juggling that 5 miles bridge and back 3 times per week will be better going to gyms
