I'm so glad I found you! I just watched several videos and found your information relevant and very helpful. I have had TMJ for years and am finally seeking help to get it under control.
I just started on Invisalign a few weeks ago to correct my bite and straighten my teeth. The orthodontist I went to said my TMJ should go away if my bite is corrected or if I wear a night guard. I have slightly overjetted front teeth and a deep bite as well. I have had ear problems like ringing and crackling for a few years and slowly started getting TMJ pain and stabbing pain in my ears over a year ago. I still have some TMJ pain and clicking noises 4 weeks into the treatment but just having my teeth squeezed together in the trays somehow relieves some of the stress and pain especially since I’m not clenching at night as much. I’m hoping it will help in the long run- I have 16 weeks of trays to go!
I have/had the same situation as you did, and I'm thinking of putting braces on to expand my lower jaw forward, which has already been suggested by 2 different orthodontists. You didn't mention wearing a splint before you started Invisalign. Did you go straight to wearing Invisalign? How are you feeling now? Have your symptoms improved? Thank you.
@@andrejmilojeski7160 No, I did not wear a splint. Just went straight into the Invisalign. I finished my set of Invisalign, but unfortunately towards the end I developed an open bite on both the left and right sides- worse on the left. The TMJ pain was very bad during that time. I'm now in the refinement stage which is supposed to correct the open bite and fix some of my teeth that are still slightly crooked. I'm on the 8th tray and the open bite doesn't seem any better and my front teeth are hitting each other hard when i bite down so I don't know if maybe the over jet/ over bite was overcorrected.. I am going to the orthodontist this week to see what's next in the refinement. Overall my teeth just look nice and the TMJ pain is still there, but I haven't had as many "bad" days as before.
@@melissaquintero7201 Hi Melissa. I am currently wearing a functional appliance which puts my lower jaw forward and yes, afterwards my orthodontist plans on putting braces on me to correct the deep bite that I have.
Your videos and explanations are so wonderful for the lay-person. I would like to see more explanation about how jawbone relationships may also predispose to TMJD, since the teeth are housed in the bones, and for most people, this cannot be altered. For example, do patients with truly smaller mandibles have more likelihood of developing TMJD because they have deep bite or excessive overjet?
Yes, they do have a higher likelihood of developing TMJD. I have a number of videos on tongue ties, orofacial development, airway, and more which cover your questions. Please check them out :) I've linked one here: th-cam.com/video/nNUyj91wp8o/w-d-xo.html

This was so helpful! No one has ever told me specifically why my bite may be causing joint issues. I've had xrays done and it looks like the temporomandibular joint itself isn't compromised. It's more of the jaw muscles that feel "stuck". My teeth are overjet so what you're saying makes sense now. Do you think braces to bring the teeth back into place would help alleviate my jaw pain?
I wouldn’t recommend braces as a way to alleviate jaw pain because it could help but it could make it worse. please watch this video and lmk if you have any questions. Phase 1 vs. Phase 2 TMJD Treatment - Priya Mistry, DDS (the TMJ doc) #tmjd #headaches #tmj th-cam.com/video/ZFVYD3ul6iM/w-d-xo.html
Hey Priya, thankyou for sharing this interesting video! I have a class 3 occlusion and have been diagnosed with TMD. I also have experienced jaw locking and clicking noises in the jaw. I'm wondering whether I should get a splint made to correct my occlusion and whether it will relieve my pain. What are your thoughts?
Thank you for your comment. I don’t want to make a video about different orthotics because it’s not about the name of the orthotic, it’s about the prescription built into it - perhaps I can make a video on that 😊
I had my back molar extracted cause an impacted wisdom tooth was pressing against it. The pressure was relieved but I started getting severe tmj pain. With every symptom you can Inmagine. (neckpain & tightness, scm muscle tightness, shoulderpain, tinnitus, clogged ears, popping clicking crunching, locked jaw, and recently a flare up that's lasting for weeks with pressure headaches and eye socket pain severe fatigue, vertigo and brain fog. Also developed severe sleep apnea) I've seen many dentists for a 2nd opinion and only now I start wondering if this missing tooth is affecting my bite. I'm not using that molar since it's gone so I chew on one side. And my bite has gotten misaligned. No dentist has ever told me that I need a replacement of that tooth. Yet they all see me suffer and shrug their shoulders. Would a bridge or implant that corrects my bite help my tmjd?
Thank you! I was hoping you could comment on whether a Botox injection into the Masseter would help my long standing TMJ issues? Thank you for your videos which I find helpful!
